WATCH: Our Family Kitchen & Shop at Kew Gardens was featured on the world’s leading international broadcaster, the BBC.
The feature delves into the educational and interactive nature of the project dubbing it ‘a window into the science behind our food and a chance to engage with the natural world.’
Watch our Director, Jonathan Mizzi, speaking about the project below 👇🏻
From sketch to creation – light zooms up to our lenticular paddles and a seed sprouts to life! Our spring section at the Kew Gardens Family Kitchen is all about teaching children and adults the process of food growth. We worked closely with Kew’s team to uncover fun facts about the lifespan of the fruit and vegetables we eat daily.
The magic of the ‘wood-wide-web’ is brought to life through play and interactivity. Giant bulbous buttons invite visitors to press down and watch LED lighting dashing up chords inset within the timber mushroom sculptures. These illuminated connections replicate the connections that exist in mycelium networks - a fascinating system and sophisticated system of communication that exists hidden in nature.
From sketch to creation – Mizzi Studio is captivated by the splendour of the ‘wood-wide-web’. Our autumnal seating design celebrates mushrooms and their significant role in the mycelium networks within woodlands and forests. We worked closely with Tom Hare to create this warm environment where families can sit, eat and interact with the sculptures.
"I was thrilled to create the giant woven mushrooms in Kews Family Kitchen for Mizzi studio. Its a bold ,brave and thoughtful design. The mushrooms are a perfect fit for Kew ,botanic sculptures woven In plant material , and the scale even gives the adults a sense of the childlike ." Tom Hare
In this zone also lies our stone-baking pizza oven, an ode to children’s love for pizza! Circling its fire-burning stove are a series of differently heighted periscope like tubes. Within each one, a fruit or vegetable is reflected back to children as they look into the tube, helping them to feel closer and more familiar with some of the ingredients that top their beloved pizzas.
From sketch to creation – an engineered timber apple skeleton doubles as an intimate spot for seating. Families can gather together in the cosy core of this beloved fruit, whose design was perfected over time by the Mizzi Studio team, including architectural designer Ashwini Ashokkumar and assistant designer Julia Frendo.
"The Giant Garden was designed to be an immersive learning experience. The larger than life sculptures aim to captivate children's imagination and bring attention to Kew's crucial research on food security. The central seat takes biomimetic references from the False Banana or 'Enset' tree, a food crop in Ethiopia dubbed by Kew researchers as 'the tree against hunger' for its potential to feed 100 million across Africa. The Apple pod shines light on the Crop Wild Relatives project, as well as the importance of sustaining all varieties of one crop for future resilience – another key Kew research project." Ashwini Ashokkumar, Architectural Designer.
Making sure hands are fully sanitised before every meal is an important step in the journey of food education. Our aim has been to add joy to the process of hand sanitising, ensuring young children spend the right amount of time cleaning up before their meal!
From sketch to creation – our botanical hand sanitisation station merges nature with science. Mizzi Studio’s Senior Associate, Matthew Chilton, worked on its playfully bold design, bringing into three-dimension the vision for a space that promoted hygiene, plant education and play.
"The botanical towers highlights the importance of hand washing, with the amazing antibacterial properties of plants and saponins put into focus. The bright blue, laboratory inspired towers reach up at different heights providing access to all ages, whilst seemingly distilling plants essence down into soaps for use." Matthew Chilton, Associate Designer, Mizzi Studio
The brilliance and marvel of water is captured in undulant mosaic waves, each parting to welcome visitors into the new Family Kitchen at Kew Gardens. In our water wave seating, we use beautiful circular tiles to represent the tones and character of the ocean, inviting visitors to sit, touch and feel the surface of the waves.
The story of Mizzi Studio’s Family Kitchen begins with the sun, the rain, and the sea.
Families are drawn inside the restaurant by a radiating LED sun as they walk through the parted mosaic seas and delicately suspended rain clouds. This is the start of nature’s journey. The start of food’s natural cycle. The start of growth, life, and sustenance.
Our new family kitchen for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in southwest London, presents a world of fantasy, featuring a colourful, interactive space educating visitors about the origins of their food. Click the link below to read the full story 👇🏻

Royal Botanic Gardens Café Designed By Maltese Firm Recognised As 'Sustainable Celebration Of Colour & Nature' | Gadgets The award-winning Malta and London-based firm Mizzi Studio, which is led by Jonathan Mizzi, the Maltese-British architect with a passion for futurism,
We looked to the fundamental processes that occur in nature to inform the way we built Kew’s newest family space – a space where food and its provenance is given a central role. In doing so, we were reminded of the wonder that exists in plants, vegetables, fruit, fungi, trees, flowers, seeds, and more. Nature’s ecosystem is a treasure trove of spectacles and sensations.
The new Kew Family Kitchen aims to harness that magic and channel it into an entertaining yet educational space for dining, play, exploration and togetherness. Our work on the Kitchen’s interiors is inspired by the life that grows from our planet’s wondrous four seasons.

Nature is our hero and inspiration – there is nothing more important than the relationship we have with nature now, in the present, and the one we must cultivate into the future. This is why we are so honoured and excited to have been working with Kew Gardens – a world leader in botanical research and education – over the past 2 years.
Working with Kew has amplified our studio’s mission to design humanity out of our current crisis. It has also reignited our love for colour, play, fantasy, and the magic of biomorphism! Mizzi Studio’s Family Kitchen interiors is a space that helps to teach both children and adults lessons about nature and food through activity, exploration, and play.

Our studio is constantly learning from the richness of Malta’s architectural heritage. For the design of the Canberra House reception, we took influence form the material composition of Valletta, as well as the islands a whole, and selected an elegant natural stone or terrazzo for interior walls and floors. In doing so, we prioritised sustainable sourced and manufactured materials, using responsibly sourced oak for the reception’s cylindrical custom desk.
Accents of brass appear throughout the reception interiors to add textural variety and lustre to the space. Planters and a statement living green wall were introduced to bring contrast to the materiality of the interiors – infusing them with nature-driven textures, colours and scents.
These design drivers follow our team’s longstanding belief that nature-driven spaces, texture and tactile discovery are all things that elevate people’s day-to-day experiences. Like all our projects, the Canberra House reception demonstrates our consistent dedication to material exploration, biophilic qualities, and respect for heritage.

Rewilding our Streets - Malta's current local street infrastructure does not allow for safe alternative modes of transportation. Our proposal is to restructure local secondary and tertiary roads to a one way system in order to create a balance between car lanes, cycling and pedestrianised paths.
Adapting to extreme heat - The lanes will be sectioned off by a centre strip of indigenous trees, resulting in a dramatic cooling effect. Tree lined streets can drop average temperatures by 10°C on a hot summer’s day. This will be critical in the years to come during more frequent and more extreme heatwaves due to global warming where heat waves maybe frequently hitting 50°C.
This bold move would not only allow for safe pedestrian and cyclist travel whilst encouraging physical activity, it would also result in benefits to people’s overall mental and physical wellbeing whilst enabling biodiversity to thrive.

Driving under the Tree Canopy Line - Our proposal for an elevated cyclist canopy line is an infrastructural, bolt-on solution that offers cyclists and e-scooters a safe and swift passageway on arterial roads. The nature-led design will shelter commuters from the elements whilst harnessing their power. A solar powered canopy gives clean energy back to the grid whilst rain water will be captured and used to grow wildflowers and ivy to clean our air whilst creating a green trail for our pollinators.
Our proposed design can be prefabricated off site and simply transplanted with minimal disruption to our roads and our daily commute.

Presenting the first of Mizzi Studio's four-part adaptive green multi-modal infrastructural proposals that aims to design Malta out of the current environmental crisis.
The Rapid Bus Transport System offers car drivers a reliable and trusted alternative mode of public transport that would be free from traffic, clean and emission free run by an electric bus fleet on a dedicated exclusive bus lane across all of our major arterial roads of the island.
The infrastructure is already there. All we would need to do is paint one lane red and increase our bus fleet capacity.
What lane would you rather be in?
Jonathan Mizzi passionately unveiled his ideas for how Malta can start to develop its built and natural environment differently – both infrastructurally and emotionally – during the TEDx UniversityofMalta event, held in November at the University of Malta. He referenced the fact that we are now, globally, in the most consequential decade of humanity, proclaiming “what we do between 2020 and 2030 will determine the future of our species”. Mizzi went on to say that “We must embrace hope and drive action, we must convert hindsight into creative foresight and design humanity out a climate crisis"
