One of my favourite afternoon snacks is unsweetened greek yoghurt with pumpkin seeds and frozen raspberries.
Ingredients:
125g unsweetened greek yoghurt
1 date
1tsp pumpkin seeds
Frozen raspberries
I add 1 date, chopped in small pieces to add some natural sweetness.
This snack not only keeps you full, but also provides your daily dose of probiotics and prebiotics for your gut health, zinc and fibres from pumpkin seeds, magnesium from dates, vitamins and antioxydants from the berries.
You can use any natural or frozen fruit of your choice: banana, papaya, apple, grapes, kiwi.

It was a pleasure to deliver a talk to the students of a private school.
I enjoyed the response and the interest the students showed towards adopting a healthier lifestyle.
The session was very interactive, filled with laughter, fun and exchange of information.
I strongly encourage young girls and boys to adopt healthy eating habits, exercise regularly, have sufficient sleep and decrease screen time.
For teenagers, both their physical health and their mental health are equally important.

Hey everyone,
I won two bronze medals at the recent JKA Mauritius Cup. It was a moment of contentment, not for the medals, but for all the effort and the journey it took to get there.
As a Dietitian, I've always believed in and educated my patients about the power of nourishing the body. But, as a karate practitioner, I've learned the importance of challenging it, too. It's about finding that perfect balance between pushing your limits and taking care of yourself.
These medals are a testament to what we can achieve when we are deeply committed to our personal growth. Whether it's karate, another sport, or any form of physical activity, the key is to start, commit, and enjoy the journey.
So, to all of you thinking about picking up a new sport or reigniting an old passion, my message is simple: Go for it!

Last week I had a post about sweet potatoes.

Yes, sweet potatoes are indeed healthy. They contain B vitamins, soluble fibres, magnesium, zinc and complex carbohydrates.
Sweet potatoes are recommended for diabetics and can be used instead of rice or bread.
For all those who wanted to know if orange sweet potatoes are available in Mauritius.
Yes they are.
I got mine from the market.
They are also available at specialised food stores.
My go to recipe:
Baked sweet potatoes with fresh thyme, chopped garlic and olive oil.
( no added salt)
A simple healthy lunch put together within minutes.
Wholewheat Sourdough toast with tuna, poached eggs and some leftover avocado.
Accompanied by boiled sweet potato and a green salad.

Did you know that you could bake your pancakes?
Yes, baked pancakes are so simple and time saving.
Prepare your regular pancake batter, add some fresh fruits for more vitamins and fibres, pour the batter into a cake tin or muffin moulds and allow to bake until cooked.
So the next time your kids want pancakes on a Sunday morning, bake them. It saves you time from flipping over pancakes and standing for hours. And the whole family can enjoy them.
My advice: avoid adding sugar to pancake batter. Instead use fruits like banana, blueberries, apples for some natural flavour and sweetness.

Meal Prep to Eat Healthy Amidst a Busy Schedule
Meal prep is something I definitely follow to ensure my family and I eat healthy meals.
I usually meal prep on weekends and this allows me more time to focus on work and my kids during the week.
Meal prep involves planning, preparing, and portioning your meals in advance, typically for a week at a time.
Benefits of meal prep:
1.Helps you save time during the week
2.Portion Control: when busy and stressed, we often overeat or indulge in high calorie snacks. Meal prep allows you to control portion sizes, which is crucial for maintaining a balanced diet.
3.Include healthy ingredients in your daily meals. When you prepare your meals in advance, you have complete control over the ingredients you use.
4.Cost control: Eating out or ordering takeout regularly can take a toll on your monthly budget.
5.Improved Health Outcomes: Consistently eating healthy meals through meal prep can help manage weight, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, increase energy levels, and enhance overall well-being.
My Meal prep usually involves:
1.Grains: Quinoa and Brown rice
2.Proteins: Tuna salad/ grilled fish/ roast chicken/sautรฉ chicken/ beans and pulse/ (vegetarians can opt for grilled Teokon or paneer)
3.Vegetables: I used an array of colourful vegetables to increase my intake of antioxidants, dietary fibres, vitamins and make my meals more appetizing.
All you have to do is assemble the various ingredients in the right portions to have a wholesome meal.

Our Story
Lavanya has more than 11 yearsโ experience in Nutrition & Dietetics and 6 years โ experience in a hospital set up. She has been part of a multi-disciplinary team to attend ICU patients on enteral and parenteral nutrition. She notably served as Head of the Dietetics Department at the Apollo Bramwell Hospital (now Wellkin Hospital), the largest private hospital in Mauritius. She holds a BSc in Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics and an MSc in Clinical Nutrition.
In the first half of 2019, she intervened as Dietitian in the 10th Edition of the Indian Ocean Island Games, conducting counselling, meal planning and follow-ups for around 300 Mauritian athletes over a period of 3 months.
Since 2012, she has been collaborating with organisations such as MCB Forward Foundation, SOS Childrenโs Villages and Global Rainbow Foundation with a view to promoting balanced and healthy food habits and enabling sustainable nutritional changes among her target audiences.
