Fasting during Ramadan can present several challenges for individuals with diabetes. It is crucial to break your fast if your blood sugar becomes too low. Break your fast and treat the low blood sugar with a fast-acting sugar followed by a slow-acting sugar - refer to our guide below on how to treat a
If hypoglycaemia is occurring frequently during this Ramadan, you might need to reevaluate your medications; consult your doctor to adjust your medication dosage or timing. Modifying can help prevent future episodes of hypoglycaemia and ensure a safer fasting as you begin the second half to this Ramadan.
As a diabetic, having one or two dates is a reasonable portion for breaking your fast at iftar. However, following the sunnah, which suggests having an odd number of dates, one date is sufficient for iftar, as having three might be excessive.
Performing Taraweeh prayers in hot and humid weather can be challenging, more so for diabetics. But it can be manageable with some precautions. Here are some tips:
- Eat starchy carbohydrate foods with Iftar as they are digested slowly.
- Drink plenty of water following Iftar.
- Take a bottle of water and glucose treatment (to treat hypos) with you to Taraweeh.

People with diabetes can exercise during Ramadan, but they should do so with caution and careful planning. It’s essential for them to consult with their doctor to create a personalized plan that takes into account their medication, meal timing, and intensity of exercise. They may need to adjust their medication and meal schedule to ensure they maintain stable blood sugar levels while fasting and exercising. Additionally, they should monitor their blood sugar levels regularly and be prepared to break their fast or adjust their activity level if needed to prevent hypoglycemia or other complications.
Taraweeh prayers performed during Ramadan can be considered a form of light to moderate exercise. Taraweeh involves standing, bowing, and prostrating, which can help improve flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular health. However, the intensity of taraweeh prayers may vary for individuals, and it may not be sufficient as the sole form of exercise for maintaining overall fitness.
Diabetics who are fasting during Ramadan should not stop their medication without consulting their doctor. It’s crucial for them to work with their doctor to adjust their medication timings and dosage to ensure they can safely fast while at the same time managing their diabetes.
Patients with diabetes who are fasting during Ramadan should monitor their blood sugar levels more frequently than usual, typically several times a day. This frequency allows them to ensure their blood sugar remains within their target range and to adjust their medication or dietary intake as needed to manage their condition safely during fasting.

A diabetic should break their Ramadan fast if their blood sugar levels drop dangerously low (hypoglycemia) or if they experience any other health complications related to their condition. Prioritizing health is important, and breaking the fast is allowed in such circumstances to prevent further harm.

Hola!
I am Dr. Samia H.Amir, the face behind Diabetes Prevention & Care (Mauritius). Today, the 14th of November, is World Diabetes Day! I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you a lil’ bit about myself.
I am a General Practitioner (Médecin Généraliste) with a Masters in Diabetes. I am based in Port Louis but I also have consultations at APSA Diabetes Care Centre. I do home visits for the Ministry of Social Security, a job which is dear to me (albeit it being quite challenging and frustrating at times!!!). It keeps me grounded. It gives me a sense of fulfilment on a humanitarian level. It helps in building my clinical expertise. I get to understand the dynamics of healthcare in Mauritius as I operate both in the private sector and the public sector with the in-between that are Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). All this in turn help me offer better care to all my patients.
I am writing to you all today as the theme for this year’s commemoration of World Diabetes Day, “Know your risk, know your response”, is one to which I relate on a personal level. I am pre-diabetic. I knew my risk. I knew my response. I took action.
Diabetes has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Since before medical school, I kinda vowed to myself to dedicate a good part of my practice to prevention of diabetes. Fast forward a few decades here I am, Alhamdulillah, actively involved in the prevention of diabetes and improving the quality of life of people living with diabetes.
I am passionate about my job as a doctor. My consultations are fun, enjoyable and empathetic. I enjoy sharing my personal experiences with my patients. I feel it helps me connect with my patients better as they relate to my real-life situations.
I knew my risk. I knew my response. I took action. I have not progressed to diabetes.
KNOW YOUR RISK. KNOW YOUR RESPONSE. TAKE ACTION. PREVENT DIABETES.
P.S: I support .Today on World Diabetes Day, I have a special thought for those in Palestine who have no access to healthcare, NO ACCESS TO INSULIN.
International Diabetes Federation
As a group of young working adults ourselves, we care for the working population of Mauritius. For this reason every year, on the occasion of , we provide diabetes screening to companies.
This year’s theme is “Know your risk, know your response”. Studies have shown that every 10 years with diabetes reduces shortens lives by about 3.5 years. And the younger you get it, the more years you lose.
Screening = early diagnosis = timely intervention = prevention of complications + better quality of life
