Timeline photos 08/03/2022

Three years ago I was in Chintheche during a 10 day tour meeting lodge owners to talk about harnessing social media to promote their destinations. We travelled from Blantyre all the way up to Nkhata Bay, and I marveled at the changing landscape, and reveled in meeting new people in these destinations. I knew then how much I wanted to continue working in this industry, by designing bespoke tours for pleasure seekers, and working with policy makers and businesses in the tourism value chain.

Since then, I've organized tours for groups of women, couples and families who wanted a sand, safari or summit adventure in the Warm Heart of Africa. I've also had the honor of delivering workshops for 500 MSMEs in tourism, conducted research on the impact of Covid 19 on the handicraft industry and participated in stakeholder dialogue with policy makers.

To say it's been a challenging start is an understatement - I get started and almost immediately the world shuts down all travel! In addition to concerns about lost income, we all worried about the health of our loved ones, peers and ourselves.

I am honored to still be here, with an optimistic outlook (top ten for travel in 2022! Thanks Lonely Planet!) for the years ahead. If I can keep going through this, I can keep going.

The pandemic tested us all, and I am proud to stand among the women in tourism in Malawi. Happy International Women's Day!

Update! The two female cheetah who were translocated to Majete Wildlife Reserve on December 18th were released from their bomas into the wider reserve on February 18th after two months of acclimatizing to their new environment. The addition of these two females brings the reserve’s population to seven individuals, who have all been fitted with satellite collars for monitoring purposes. Cheetah had been entirely absent from Malawi for 20 years until we reintroduced a small founder population to Liwonde National Park in 2017. Two years after this national milestone, another founder population of five animals was safely translocated to Majete. Cheetahs have been eradicated from 90% of their historical range in Africa primarily due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and other anthropogenic pressures. Today, Malawi’s cheetah population have grown to over 30 individuals, a hopeful sign for one of the planet’s most endangered big cats.

This project was made possible thanks to our partnership the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and was conducted in collaboration with the Endangered Wildlife Trust, the North West Parks Board (NWPB) and Ashia Cheetah Conservation.

Last week I was honoured to be called once more to engage with micro business in tourism for a week long workshop to improve competitiveness through business training. We focused a lot on tour guides, with just one lady (Yvonne at Floodgates tours) and a few transport businesses. As ever, the willingness to show up, learn, share and commit to do better from people in the sector made my job easier. Like many of us, many of the participants didn't realise how much they already know, how much they have to offer. I highly recommend stopping at the model house right outside Ku Chawe Inn for a deeper appreciation for Zomba and Malosa mountains.

As you plan for travel in future, hopefully towards the serene and charming city that is Zomba, remember to support local businesses including tour guides.
