MV.Ilala - on Lake Malawi.

Shot by: Peter J Makwana.

MV Ilala is a motor ship that has sailed on Lake Malawi since 1951. She is operated by Malawi Shipping Company and based in Monkey Bay, Malawi (on the southern end of the lake).

Every week she crosses the lake all the way north to Chilumba, Malawi, near Tanzania (about 300 miles (480 km) from Monkey Bay) and then returns to Monkey Bay. She carries both passengers and freight, and calls at major towns on both the Malawian and Mozambican coast, as well as at the two inhabited islands of the lake (Likoma and Chizumulu).

Though old, she remains the most important means of long-distance transport for the people living on the coast of the lake. She is 172 feet (52 m) long overall, has a gross tonnage of 620 tons and can accommodate up to 365 passengers and 100 tons of cargo

The heat is here, let’s head to the LAKE!
Its Mothers Day long weekend anyway.....

Summer, the season of sun-kissed days and balmy nights, has arrived with its promise of endless adventures and vibrant memories. As the days grow longer and the world bursts into a symphony of colors, it's time to embrace the great outdoors.

Beaches beckon with their soft sands and rhythmic waves, inviting us to bask in the warmth of the sun or cool off in the azure waters. The tantalizing scent of barbecue grills fills the air, and ice cream vendors offer sweet respite from the heat.

Malawi is beautiful. This is Sunbird Nkopola.

Photos: Peter J Makwana

Lake Malawi covers more than 15% of the country, and is the most beautiful of Africa’s great lakes. Sunbird Nkopola Lodge is the premier beachside resort in the south of the lake, 24 km north of Mangochi. Set amidst tropical vegetation, Baobab trees in its own beach-lined bay, the hotel has some of the most spectacular sunrises and views in Africa.

Malape Pillars

Malape Pillars may not be as well-known as Mount Mulanje or Lake Malawi but these mysterious sandstone formations nesting deep in the the trees at the foot of the verdantly-forested Chikala Hills (reason others call them Chikala pillars, though the locals do not agree). This is in Machinga District.

The ‘pillars’ form due to puddles of crystals which protect the columns of grit underneath as the rains erode the surrounding unprotected areas. As the sides of the canyon erode and the crystal blocks tumble off, beautifully sculpted pinnacles remain.

Liwonde National Park is one of Malawi's most renowned and oldest national parks, located in the southern part of the country. It covers an area of approximately 548 square kilometers (211 square miles) and is situated along the banks of the Shire River, making it an essential water source for the park's wildlife.

Photos: Peter J Makwana

5 Reasons To Visit Liwonde
Some of the best river-based elephant, crocodile, hippo and general wildlife viewing in Africa.

Home to the rare and critically endangered black rhino as well as the historic elephant translocation.

Experience the cathedral-like mopane woodlands interspersed with candelabra euphorbia with good populations of buffalo and sable antelope.

The amazing views of Borassus palm-studded floodplains.
Finally, a bird watcher’s delight with easy viewing of Pel’s fishing owl, Boehm’s bee-eaters, Lilian’s lovebirds, and Livingstone’s flycatcher.

When to Visit

The ideal time to visit the park is during the dry season from April to October. During this time, the bush is dry and open, making game easier to spot.

There are three distinct seasons in the area:

November – March
When the rains begin, the conditions are generally hot and wet. Humidity peaks during January and February, and the bush is thick, making it difficult to spot game. However, Liwonde is magically turned from a dust bowl into an emerald paradise during this time, and is particularly beautiful.

April – August
Temperatures are cooler and rainfall drops during this period. It is advisable to take warmer clothing for activities during the early morning and evenings or on the river, particularly in July and August.

September – October
Temperatures are extremely high and it is very hot and dry during these months. The landscape is sparse and dry with limited vegetation cover, but game viewing is amazing.

Liwonde is a must-do for those who want a top notch safari away from the crowds.

The diversity of Malawi’s wonders never ceases to amaze the world and visitors.

Another reason to visit Malosa in Zomba is the Colossal Banyan tree (Chilema Tree). This is one of the incredible sights visitors to the country can witness. What appears to be a forest is actually one tree.

Photos: Peter J Makwana

The tree is more than 50 years old, and covers an area of 700 square meters. The Banyan tree is the only one of its kind in the whole of Malawi and it is found in Malosa, the beautiful old capital city of Zomba.

'Chilema' in Chichewa (the local language) means 'disabled' or 'deformed' and this area gets its name from two natural phenomena. Firstly a stream that starts at the top of Malosa Mountain but as it flows down it gets smaller and disappears at the point of Chilema. Secondly a tree, the Chilema Tree, which is a single tree that looks like an entire forest.

Malosa is a small trading centre located in the Zomba District of Malawi. The Malosa mountain range and plateau neighbours the more famous Zomba Plateau and is separated by the Domasi Valley. Malosa is on the M3, 27 km from the city of Zomba. The earth road from the trading post leads from the edge of the main road right up to the base of the Malosa mountain range.
Whenever you are in Zomba and have few minutes to spare please passby and see this beautiful little forest.
