This years theme World Water Week 2024: Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future.

The world's major challenges are closely linked to water use and management, making water-related solutions crucial for achieving sustainable development goals by 2030, as water is often the starting point for addressing these challenges.

“By using the system of coloured lights, the amount of irrigation water has been reduced by half, which means we produce the same amount of food with less resources,” said Emilio Magaia, principal investigator of FASIMO, which is co-funded by the Cultivate Africa’s Future Fund, a joint program of IDRC and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research.

Up-scaling & Expansion:

The 20% of the Investment Framework in Malawi is earmarked for training and improving irrigators, as it is crucial for the investment plan to be successful. The Malawian Ministry of Agriculture & VIA has shown remarkable results, with maize yields increasing by 90-33% and bean yields by 150-170% in the first four schemes after two years. Water use reductions have also been reported, and some schemes have expanded production areas.

However, only a small fraction of the estimated 40,000 small schemes in Malawi have been reached. With a partnership underway with the Malawian Ministry of Agriculture government & Limited, more small-scale farmers will be empowered with the training & adoption of the chameleon system.
