Young Virgins Initiated Into Womanhood In Ogu town, Rivers State, Nigeria

The people of Ogu kingdom in Ogu/Bolo LGA of Rivers State on Saturday celebrated Iria, an ancient ceremony that marks the transition of girls who are usually virgins into womanhood

Young virgins were given certificates by the Ogu council of chiefs for passing through the test.

Iria, is considered a rite of passage for young girls as they reach puberty and begin to mature physically

To pass through the test, the girls must first be virgins which will be checked by women of the town, then they will be kept in a room where they will undergo training on womanhood

After passing through this process, the qualified girls will be given certificates showing that they are now adult ladies ready to marry.

It's an Ijaw ceremony that dates back to the 17th century.

MEDIA personality and talk show host Mutale Mwanza has been sued for allegedly yelling at a motorist while holding a gun, an incident which allegedly left the female victim, who is a doctor at the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH), traumatized.

The complainant, Natasha Mulenga, has complained that the incident left her extremely traumatized and she now wants the Lusaka High Court to order the outspoken entrepreneur to pay her damages for assault.

Court records show that the incident happened on November 5, 2023, when the two were stuck in traffic before the defendant, Ms Mwanza, emerged from her car with a gun.

The statement of claim filed at the Lusaka High Court shows that Dr Mulenga was on the material day driving home when she found a broken-down car in Chainda area and that during the time, traffic was building behind the stationery automobile.
The plaintiff submits that she then decided to keep to her lane and pass the scene in order for the built-up traffic to flow.

But before her vehicle passed the broken-down car, Ms Mwanza had started flashing vehicle lights at the doctor's car and decided the defendant then decided to bypass the broken-down vehicle, joining Ms Mulenga’s lane.

The plaintiff submits that when Ms Mwanza blocked her car, the defendant(Ms Mwanza) then proceeded to disembark from her vehicle while carrying a firearm in her right hand. Ms Mwanza then approached Dr Mulenga's vehicle while shouting at her and banging on her vehicle.

“Arising from that, the plaintiff suffered extreme trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, severe anxiety, physiological distress, sleep disorder, experienced recurring nightmares about the event and gastrointestinal upset,” she submits in part.

The doctor adds that as a result of the injury suffered, she had to be placed on a mandatory 10 day medical leave due to diminished concentration and had to see a psychotherapist at the Adult and Emergency Hospital at UTH.

She now seeks damages for assault, among other reliefs.

From 3 December, 2023 all Students who are in secondary school will have an advantage to access free additional education lessons through Cecil Juma's page.

Speaking on this initiative, Cecil Juma who is the founder of the initiative and he also own the Cecil Juma's page explained the reason why he has decided to introduce the initiative.

"Online education is a tool that is being used by many developed countries to enhance learning, like in our case we want to simplify learning by bringing the subjects to students, it has to be their reference point. Students can enhance their understanding by going through our lessons online," Juma explained.

He has underscored the need for students who are in remote areas to acquire the quality education regardless of shortage of teachers in their schools.

On the shortage of gadgets, Juma has said that he know many students mostly in rural areas they will have a challenge when accessing these online lessons because of; lack of proper gadgets but in near future his team is expected to work with schools, government and NGOs on how they can make to tackle this challenge.

In the moment, other two University graduate have volunteered themselves to deliver these lessons and the lessons for the whole week will be uploaded on 6:00pm every Sunday.

The initiative is targeting over 100 thousands students from various secondary schools across the country.

Currently, Juma has emphasized the point that students must attend normal lessons from there respective schools hence this initiative is not encouraging anyone to shun the normal lessons in class.

Cecil Juma graduated in February 2023 from Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) with the Bachelor of Science in Electromechanical engineering.

TIGWIRIZANE CBO ON THE MOVE

A local organisation known as Tigwirizane Community Based Organisation (CBO) which is located at Village Head Mpanje, Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba district on Friday 17 November, 2023 held the meeting to review its developmental projects in which the organisation is undertaking in the area.

In his remarks, Dalitso Muronya who is the founder and Chairperson of the organisation said that the meeting involved local leaders to voice out their views on the projects that the organisation is implementing in the area.

"The meeting was organized in order to provide the chance to local leaders to review the first month's project activities, to foster collaboration, and advocate for national unity in development towards Malawi 2063 and sustainable development goals," said Muronya.

He explained that his organisation is implementing several projects in the area including; Plastic Pollution Free Zomba Initiative, Community Clean-up, Nyasi Mayazi Movement, Bee-keeping, Women's Innovation Clubs, Mwandama School Feeding Program, Environmental Conservation, Child Care Centers, and Governance Programs.

On the similar development, Tigwirizane CBO is working in collaboration with other organisations in the area through partnerships in order to address different challenges.

Meanwhile, the organisation has appealed for more support from well-wishers to donate materials and learning equipments.

According to Muronya, TIGWIRIZANE CBO is a youth-driven organization which empower communities by promoting the youths, women, as well as rights of people with disabilities. The organisation started its operations in 2014 then it was fully registered in 2017.
