Microsoft sets Oct. 25 kickoff event for Windows 8 in NYC

Microsoft this morn­ing sent out ‘save the date’ notes to jour­nal­ists for an Oct. 25 “cel­e­bra­tion” of Win­dows 8 in New York City. That’s the day before the sched­uled debut of the new oper­at­ing sys­tem, the biggest change to Microsoft Win­dows since the land­mark Win­dows 95 release.

The invite doesn’t spec­i­fy the venue or the agen­da, but it’s like­ly to include pre­sen­ta­tions and talks by key Microsoft exec­u­tives and part­ners. It’s also expect­ed to serve as the com­ing out party for Microsoft’s Sur­face tablet com­put­er, for which the com­pa­ny still hasn’t announced pric­ing.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in an inter­view with the Seat­tle Times over the week­end that he has no doubt Win­dows 8 will be a suc­cess, despite the major changes it will present to long­time Win­dows users, includ­ing a new, tile-based default Start screen.

Microsoft just announced how it's going to sell the next ver­sion of Office, called Office 2013. The new edi­tion has changed dra­mat­i­cal­ly to bet­ter match Win­dows 8, and not just in terms of user inter­face: This will be the first ver­sion of Office that Microsoft sells via sub­scrip­tion.

Microsoft revealed the sub­scrip­tion model when it first unveiled Office 2013, but now we know exact­ly how much it will cost: $8.33 a month or $99.95 a year. That's for Office 365 Home Pre­mi­um, which includes all the client soft­ware (Word, Excel, Pow­er­Point, Out­look, OneNote and oth­ers), but as a sub­scriber you're now enti­tled to all soft­ware updates and access to web ser­vices includ­ed with Office.
