The Auditorio Nacional, one of the most famous entertainment venues in Mexico, has silently released a new identity designed by the Mexican design studio Bala in collaboration with the advertising agency Bombay.

There is still not a lot of information about the project, except for an Instagram post made by the design studio. Bala mentions the logo represents the magical encounter between artists and audience, hence the mirrored shapes—which additionally refer to the iconic architecture of the auditorium.

Even tho I don't have a complete understanding of the strategy of this redesign, I have to say that I really like it. And although it follows the trend of geometric typefaces, for some reason I feel it is the perfect pair for the mark.

It is so simple and current, and keeps the essence of the previous logo. It also has the flexibility to represent the multiple types of events the auditorium hosts, from classic dance, opera, and film festivals, to pop concerts, musicals, and international plays.

The new identity aims to convey the challenging, positive, good-humored and open-minded style that characterizes the brand.

The logo keeps the well known yellow of the previous design, as well as the purple and green in a darker and lighter shade, respectively. It also replaces the organic typeface of the older logo with an all-caps sans-serif font that has been modified to reflect 'dynamism and humor'. An abstract grapefruit slice has also been added at the bottom of the S to show the drink flavor.

In my opinion, the new logo seems an amateur project. The way the R is cut is a very common place to go, and the interaction between the C and A is not working, just look at how the curve of the C is not even matching the curve from the A.

The idea of highlighting the "ES" in the name might be with the intention of playing with the word for future taglines like "Fresca es...". However, the grapefruit slice underneath the letters is an unnecessary element that could have been used as a secondary element in other applications.

Overall, I feel the previous logo represented better the fun and fresh personality of the brand. I personally think there was a lot of potential in the purple background of the previous logo as it resembles a smile and a fruit slice. With the right treatment and refinement, this purple slice/smile could have turned into a main element of the brand, just like Amazon did with its arrow.
