Horseback Mexico Rancho Pitaya

Oaxaca is having the most spectacular summer filled with wildflowers and butterflies. It’s like riding in a fairytale!

This morning it was busy on the road! A local shepherd is moving his cattle and goats to the lush grass that’s all around now for them to graze on.

It’s been a while since we featured Bonita’s magnificent ears! These native pink acacia blooms are a sign that spring is here.

And we might as well get Alana Jane used to wearing a helmet when she rides ❤️

April is all about fruiting cactus - pitayas and tunas - a favorite of humans and birds alike!

Our small band of 12 horses is now almost exclusively Arabians ( Niza right ) and Criollos ( Shushu ) - distance breeds par excellence! ❤️🐎❤️

7 yr. old identical twins, and Mighty, were awesome at our Family Equine Experience this morning.

“That’s what sheepskin saddle pads are made for.”, purred Tigger this morning. ❤️🐈❤️🐎

Meet Shushu, the newest member of our all-star lineup of equines at Horseback Mexico. She’s a 9 yr. criolla mare we rescued from neglect and solitude 7 weeks ago. She is 40 kilos more beautiful and 12 equine friends richer! We hope she is happy with her new life- her ears point in that direction 🥰🐎🥰

I woke up this morning to Mona weeding my rock garden. She is doing such a good job nibbling away the wild grasses, I’ve just left her there. 🐎😍😋

I just got back from scouting a new progressive ride on the high Mixtec planes of Oaxaca - a little-visited region whose beauty goes from the ethereal to the exuberant.

We commonly ride by these gentle giants tethered in open grazing pastures. The horses are always interested 🐎👀👌🏾

On full day rides we’re careful to give the horses several opportunities to munch green grass that is 90% water and full of natural electrolytes. 🥳 Healthy 🐎

The rainy season has arrived and Oaxaca has turned emerald. Perfect summer weather - cool nights and sunny days with brief but intense showers late afternoon. Come ride in dazzling green Oaxaca! ❤️🐎🌞🌦️

Our newest rescue puppy Spice along with her sister Sugar went out on her first trail ride with horses and riders. Now a big, strong girl at 4 months, she looked only occasionally for guidance from the older dogs Noche & Jet. The following pics are the two after a month at the Rancho Pitaya and just arrived at 8 weeks. ❤️🐶& 🐎

Are there seasons in the tropics? Spring is cactus flower season in the interior highlands of Oaxaca. ❤️🌼🌵and of course 🐎

Our beloved donkey Bonita has joined the ranks of working equine. Trainer Amelia Greenberg rides Bonita and ponies Centurion, giving just the extra measure of security to a youngster a bit apprehensive. Bonita got A+ and seemed to truly enjoy her outing with pasture mates. 👏😍

The native cacti at Rancho Pitaya frames these happy New Zealanders on our Arabian grays Midnight and Spirit. Three cheers for perfect winter weather! 🐎🥰🌵🥰🐎
