Viviparous or Oviparous?

At beginning people thought the whale shark was viviparous, then oviparous, but the latest research prove that whale sharks are ovoviviparous, this means that hatch inside their mother, and successively the mother “gives birth” to her little young; at birth are between 40 and 60cm length, similar to human baby’s length.

Millions of years ago, the Yucatan Peninsula was below sea level. At that time there was only one continent, Pangea, surrounded by water. It was 200 million years ago that the continents were formed leaving the Yucatan Peninsula in its current position. And 100 million years ago it emerged when the sea level fell in the glaciations. It was then that the ancient marine inhabitants would be exposed and fossilized.

On the surface of the peninsula, meters and meters of marine sediment from that time accumulate: fossilized remains of all the marine creatures that once swam here. Its remains make up a very special type of rock: limestone. Today you can see fossils scattered on the ground as you walk through the jungle embedded in the rock that tell us about that time thousands of years ago: mainly corals and shells. Inside the cenotes today full of water you can find hundreds of them.

With the Yucatan peninsula already emerged and made of limestone rock, conditions were perfect for Mother Nature to create the largest and most complex dissolution cave system on the planet.

In the chemical process of dissolution, limestone rock and carbonic acid are converted into dissolved calcium bicarbonate. Upon reaching the interior of the dry cave, if the temperature conditions are adequate, the calcium carbonate re-precipitates in a solid state, forming stalactites and stalagmites (speleothems).

On the other hand, the roof weakened in places and began to give way, collapsing and creating a surface access to the river. The cenotes were born. This process began on a large scale 2 million years ago.

In the course of this time, the planet experienced several glacial and interglacial eras that varied the sea level up to 65 meters. The caves alternated dry and flooded times.

Finally the last ice age ended 18,000 years ago and the sea level reached its current height. A large part of the caves had been submerged below sea level, and those that remained above were filled with rainwater, forming the most important aquifer for the Yucatan.

𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙 𝒐𝒓 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙’𝑶𝒃
The legend of the 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙𝒆𝒔: the Mayan magical creatures that guard the jungle in Cobá, Tulum and other regions.

It is believed that Mayan sorcerers and sages made figures of 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙𝒆𝒔, similar to Mayan idols, using virgin clay extracted from a cave that no woman had entered. As they were made to order, another of the essential ingredients for the creation of this mystical creature were nine drops of blood extracted from the torrent of who was going to be its owner, thus forming a solid alliance between human and creature. Once the clay figure was ready, it was handed over to its owner and he placed it on an altar. At night, the 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙 came alive to take care of the owner's property and his animals.

The stories say that deep in the jungle the presence of an 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙 can be noticed when someone invades its territory and the creature begins to make strange sounds or throw stones to drive away the invader. It also manifests itself in laughter, shadows, figures that vanish, and things that change places. These acts are a sign of affection and fidelity of the 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙 towards his master and a way of caring for nature. When his master dies, the 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙 remains in the deceased's territories to care for them, remaining under the protection of Yum-Kaax, the Mayan god of corn.

As a fantastic creature endowed with certain powers, an 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙 needs attention and offerings to keep him happy, especially if someone has the idea of invading his territories. The least way to calm his anger is by giving him an offering containing pozol and corn, staples in the diet of the Mayan culture that continue to prevail today. Otherwise, the 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒙 can steal the intruder's belongings, harm their animals, or spoil their crops.

Learn more about the incredible Mayan culture and fall in love with our Mystical Mexico.

This is something you must know about Cʜɪᴄʜᴇ́ɴ Iᴛᴢᴀ́.

Sac-Nicté which means “white flower”, she was born in Mayapán, a city that coexisted with three sister cities: Uxmal and Cʜɪᴄʜᴇ́ɴ Iᴛᴢᴀ́.

Canek, which means “black snake”, was a very tenacious prince who at the age of 21 was appointed king of the city of Cʜɪᴄʜᴇ́ɴ Iᴛᴢᴀ́.

Legend has it that from the day he saw Princess Sac-Nicté, that same night, he fell in love .

The princess saw King Canek before her eyes, sitting in front of the throne, they were arrowed ... But Sac-Nicté, was already destined for another man, Ulil, the crown prince of the city of Uxmal.

Time passed and young Canek was invited to Sac-Nicté's wedding party. There a counselor told him that the young woman would be waiting for him among green flowers; that it would be necessary to fight for her, before fate acted against her.

On the wedding day, while all the guests danced merrily, Canek arrived with sixty of his chief warriors and ascended to the altar where incense burned and priests sang.

Canek arrived with the Itzá sign on his chest: Itzalán!
Itzalán! they screamed as in a battlefield, and in the instant, he snatched the princess of the witnesses.

Ulil enraged rose in arms. The war had been unleashed: Mayapán and Uxmal against the Itza.

Although Mayapán's reign had ended, the Itza left their houses and temples at Cʜɪᴄʜᴇ́ɴ Iᴛᴢᴀ́, leaving the city in tears.

Before the sons of Itzá went King Canek, walking along the paths beside Sac-Nicté.

Although the Itza were saved, the armies of Uxmal and Mayapán found echoes in the empty palaces and temples. Cʜɪᴄʜᴇ́ɴ Iᴛᴢᴀ́ was left dead, because her town had been abandoned.

You have to feel the vibe in this magical Mayan place.
