Alma Libre is thrilled to offer an evening of learning and creating with a couple of our fantastic local artists, Francisco Mendez and Monica Valdes. You will get to see how they craft Alebrije’s and Sugar Skulls from a myriad of recycled materials, and learn about these traditional mexican art forms. Next, you will get to choose one of the forms to paint and decorate with support and instruction from these two masters. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot asap.

"The Exorcist" by William Peter Blatty, was released in 1971. He adapted the book to the screen 50 years ago and has been scaring generations ever since. This story is loosely based on true life events in 1949. If you were scared by the images of demon possession in the movie, imagine what tricks your mind is going to play as you read the book! "...but some others she had clearly manifested: the involuntary motor excitement; foul breath; furred tongue; the wasting away of the bodily frame; the distended stomach; the irritations of the skin and mucus membranes; ...the striking change in the voice and in the features, plus the manifestation of a new personality."

Attention, gentle readers! We will be reopening tomorrow, Monday, July 10th at 10:00 a.m. in our new location located 2 spots down from the OXXO on Rojo Gomez (look for the amazing mural in progress on the staircase in front of us! There will still be some construction going on, but we hope you'll pardon our dust and bring your book lust. Hours are still 10-5, 7 days a week. Hope to see you very soon!

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: but wait, there's more (construction, that is)! Which will push our reopening back to next week, but be well worth the wait. Thank you for your continued patience!

Gentle Alma Libre fans: We are anticipating being ready to reopen sooner than expected! Things will still be slightly "under construction", but there will be plenty of things to read and admire...and hopefully buy? Stay tuned for an announcement this weekend with the actual reopen date. 🙃

Alma Libre Move - Week 2.5 update: It has been a busy, busy week and a half! With our old space completely cleared out, our focus could now be solely on the new store, located 2 spaces south of the OXXO (next to the church on Rojo Gomez). Our existing bookcases were removed, modified, and reinstalled in the new space, along with many additional brand new bookcases, front counter, and office cabinets. The air conditioners were installed, and are now in use after the majority of the construction dust was (mostly) taken care of. Bit by bit, the books are being placed on the shelves. That’s inside the store! Meanwhile on the storefront front: a window was cut out and installed, and the garage-style door was replaced with a custom wood door with window panes. That was all given a lovely coat of blue paint. We said adios to the old (rotting) palapa roof, and began construction for the new tiled one. Finally, the muralists began their labor of prepping the first of their many canvas surfaces. We’re moving right along, but still have no soft opening date. Thank you, as always, for your interest and patience, as we grow and evolve.

Moving day! The first one, anyway. Our goal was to clear the perimeter bookcases, and we crushed it! We expect this process to take a month, at least, and will be closed for the duration. Thank you for your support and understanding; we promise it will be worth the wait!

Greetings my dear free spirited book lovers. Be ye near or far from these ever delightful Caribbean shores, we wish you well. The ratty tat and natty nat nature of the pic you see here is pretty significant. You see, after 25 plus years of wielding the word at our current location, Alma Libre is soon to be on the move. The winds of change have huffed, they have puffed, and they have quiet literally blowed us! Rather than folding up and flitting away, we have chosen instead to bold it, to big it, and to renovate a new and delightful bookish lair. We have twice the floor space, some big ol’ future plans involving events, classes, live performance, and cultural goodies, and of course, our stubborn optimism remains. Our belief in the essential nature of bookstores and what they mean to a community, rages on! At the end of the week, we shall be closing our doors for a time and beginning the task of packing up and rejigging our giggity gig.. Our hope is that in a few short weeks, we shall be back to standard shenanigans in our fancy new locale, just around the corner, by the OXXO, on the road to Chedraui. For all the local peeps who visit us on the regular, fret not, it shall be fantastic, and won’t be long. For those of you currently far far away, we are soooo very stoked to have a new and vibrant venue to host you upon return.
Here is to next chapters, new stories, and the magic of it all.

Greetings Alma Libre peeps. A couple of super cool milestones in the world of independent bookstores of late. Alma Libre, between us, Rob and Jo, and Jeanine and Paul, has just passed the 25 year mark. Legend really. Our mother ship store in Golden, Bacchus Books, just hit the 20 year mark this month. Also legend! The following small doc style film was created by the amazing Madeline Archibald in conjunction with yours truly to pay homage. Give it a wee sip. I think you will like it. Hopefully it will inspire the chasing of dreams and perhaps, just perhaps, reaching for my booky baton.

New Year, New (to)me! Alma Libre will be open noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, January 1st, 2023. Hope you can drop by!

It's that time of year again! We will be closed Sunday, December 25th, but open Christmas Eve until 5:00 p.m. We do have GIFT CERTIFICATES (available in English and Spanish) in case you just can't decide what to get 😉

Our shelves runneth over! We just received 8 boxes of new books, many of them kid's titles! Come visit us with your mini me Monday to Sunday, 10 to 6 p.m.
