" THE ROYAL BAKERS "

Imagine this; A Royal banquet dinner, attended by the King and Queen, Princes and Princesses, alongside their distinguished guests of Dato-Dato, and VIPs - held in one of the largest reception rooms of Istana Anak Bukit; An event grand, prim and proper with orchids adorning the hallways, bouqets of roses and tulips centerpiecing the banquest tables.

We had exactly that in mind when we were informed that we were to bake for the annual Royal event. Dressed for the occassion, we arrived at the Palace with boxfuls of cakes, cookies, and ice-creams.

"Make way for the Royal Bakers", we even jokingly said amongst ourselves while on our way to the hall, if anyone were to come in our way. Once there, we were in awe by the grandeur of things; The rows of crystal chandeliers brightly lit, the Royal yellow carpet and the neverending rows of banquet tables with cutleries pefectly aligned, everything flawlessly detailed.

But - the feeling of awe was a shortlived one - soon as we saw that there weren't any tulips on the tables, nor were there red roses.
There were instead bouquets of carrots, brocolli, and capsicums decorating the tables. Don't get us wrong, they were still very nicely done, but a bouquet of vegetables was the last thing we imagined for an event this grand.

Then it all made sense to us, why we were sent back to our kitchen to rebake our cakes after the first food-tasting session prior to the event, albeit baking the cake using the finest of ingredients, lavishly topped with nuts and drizzled with imported pralines.

"Be thoughful, and don't be wasteful." was the instruction we've never really gotten to understand until we witnessed the vegetable bouquet.

Extravagance came in second for the Royal household. The vegetables could feed the needy after, and guests could be allergic to nuts.

Luxury did not come in the value of price, luxury was in the details.

We would like to thank KDYMM Tuanku Sultan Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin, KDYMM Tuanku Sultanah Maliha binti Almarhum Tengku Ariff and the Kedah Royal Family for the opportunity to serve, and for saying nice things about our cakes and ice-cream. :)

For us, it wasn't just a job. It was an experience of a lifetime.
