Happy Independence Day Malaysia! Selamat Hari Merdeka! 🌟 To all our colleagues, partners and friends in Malaysia, may this Independence Day bring you joy, progress, and growth.

We are excited to announce that we have just signed a Joint Venture to establish our first office in China! Located in Guangzhou the office will be led by our Joint Venture Partner, Mr. Li Zhen, who visited us last week for a memorable trip to Malaysia along with his associates. More news to follow soon!

Did You Know? Durian has inspired architecture in Singapore.

In Singapore, The Esplanade building next to Marina Bay, started as two glass domes but the design was then altered to include more than 7,000 aluminum panels acting as sunshades. After this the buildings took on the appearance of a durian that has been cut in half.

The Esplanade today is fondly referred as The Durian, and has become a representation of Singapore’s love of durian.

HSBC has reported that global demand for durian fruit has soared 400%! We knew this would happen, did you?

Did You Know? Durian fruit has become a powerful political tool known as Durian Diplomacy

Termed “Durian Diplomacy”, Malaysia has turned to durian to boost ties with nations across the world. Durians uniqueness in terms of appearance and taste has helped cultural exchanges and talks. Musang King specifically is being used and has helped foster warmer ties between Malaysia and other countries.

The government has reported that Malaysian durian exports increased 168% from 2019-2022!

We had an amazing time attending the Asian Durian Summit 2024 hosted in Johor on Jun 28-30th. A big thank you to the event organizers and it was pleasure meeting all of you in attendance. Over 6,000 visitors joined the year’s biggest durian summit, including producers, exporters and product manufacturers from over 10 countries!

We look forward to meeting you all again next year!

Not as Bitter, a New York City East Village based coffee shop has concocted what the New York Post has described as “possibly the wildest rocket-fuel hybrid to date: the durian latte”. Its unique flavor has been a hit with consumers quickly becoming a top seller. The coffee retails for 8.50 USD and contains durian puree & two shots of espresso.

Did You Know? A durian is ripe once it falls from the tree

To know if a durian is ripe, you have to wait for it to fall naturally from the tree. In fact, many farmers in the past used to sleep near their trees just to hear the fruits drop. Today, due to their high value, nets are commonly placed around the tree to protect the durian fruit from hitting the ground and being damaged.

The durian market is expected to more than double in value reaching USD 50 billion by 2033!

Did You Know? Durian DNA has approximately 46,000 genes – almost double that of humans

Scientists in Singapore have found that durian has some 46,000 genes making the fruit far more complex than human DNA. The researchers also found that durian DNA has four times the amount of genes related to sulfur compounds compared its cousin cacao, which helps explain its strong aroma.

Did You Know? Musang King durian has a partner called, Musang Queen

Every King has a Queen, so naturally so does the Musang King durian. His partner, Musang Queen is more commonly known as Tekka or D160, a durian originating from Selangor in Malaysia. Its Queen title is believed to have originated when previous PM Dato Seri Najib made a passing comment when eating it. Musang Queen is bitter tasting and creamy with brownish-yellow flesh.

Did You Know? Cocoa, okra, hibiscus and cotton are durians’ cousins

It’s hard to believe, but durians belong to the plant family Malvaceae also known as the Mallows which include other common plants such as cocoa, okra, hibiscus and cotton. DNA research conducted in 2017 in fact traced durian 65 million years back to the cacao plant.

Malaysia’s durian industry is set to double the government has said to reach over 50 billion USD by 2033! Durian has become a significant contributor to the economy and its importance is growing each year as more people around the world get familiar with it.

Did you know? “Durian” was derived from the Malaysian word “durio”

Everyone calls it durian but only real connoisseurs know why. According to historians, it comes from the word “duri” meaning thorn with the ending “an” the noun-forming suffix. It was used in the Malay Archipelago as early as 1580, because the king of fruits is native to Malaysia, and was not found elsewhere in the world at the time.
