Fine motor skills are the movements and coordination of the small muscles of the body, typically the movements that involve the fingers and the hands. Stroke can result in weakness or paralysis of the muscles in the hand, making it difficult to grasp, grip, and move objects.

Fine motor training will help you to maintain or restore your ability to use your fingers and move your hand.

These are the benefits of fine motor training:
1. Improve wrist, hand and finger range of motion
2. Boost the hand and finger strength
3. Improve dexterity; which is your ability to use your fingers, hands and arms to perform a specific task/movement
4. Improve hand manipulation/movements
5. Enhance finger isolation; the ability to move each finger one at a time
6. Improve your hand and finger sensation
7. Improve hand-eye coordination

Here are some fine motor exercises:

Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke)
A syndrome of acute, focal neurological deficit attributed to vascular injury of the central nervous system. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15 million people suffer stroke worldwide each year. Of these, 5 million die and another 5 million are left permanently disabled

Types:
1. Ischemic Stroke: The most common stroke, happens when the narrowing of the artery reduces blood flow to the brain

2. Hemorrhagic stroke: Happens due to bleeding into the brain by the rupture of a blood vessel, causing a reduction in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the brain cells

Treatment rehabilitation of stroke may include:
1. Passive Range of motion exercises
2. Passive stretching
3. Active range of motion exercises
4. Strengthening exercises

Balance exercises for older adults can improve mobility and increase stability. It can help prevent falls and injuries by strengthening your leg muscles. Balance training includes static balance exercises that challenge your ability to hold your body in a specific position and dynamic balance exercises that will challenge your ability to maintain your balance while moving your body.

Benefits of Improving Balance for Older Adults:
1. It can help you stay independent. Being mobile, strong and steady on your feet means that you can keep pursuing the activities and hobbies you enjoy
2. It can boost your self-confidence. Moving with relative ease can give you the confidence to participate in more activities and social events in a comfortable way
3. It can improve your well-being. Those with better balance are more likely to experience an improvement in well-being because they can stay active
3. It can help you avoid injuries. Not only can balance exercises help prevent falls, but they can also build muscle, which lowers the odds of injury if you do take a tumble
Here are some example exercises you may try at home.

Asthma 🫁 Is an obstructive lung condition that obstructs airflow through the lungs.

As you breathe in through your nose the air goes to your throat (pharynx & larynx) → trachea → bronchus → bronchioles and alveolus in your lungs (refer to the photo).

Bronchial inflammation can occur through smelling allergic substances that cause an inflammatory reaction and activate the immune cells responsible for sensitisation in your lungs, leading to thickening of the airways by the overproduction of mucus (refer to the photo).

Muscle Spasms ‼️ or as some people call 'muscle cramps' are a protective mechanism to prevent you from further movement.

The involuntary muscle contraction occurs after an injury, and muscle injury does not mean trauma or open wound it may be a very small injury to the microstructures of the muscle spindles (refer to the photo).

To treat your muscle spasm:
1. First of all try to change the wrong position you update or reduce the weight lifting if you go to the gym.
2. Apply a hot water bag on the muscle spasm area to relieve the pain and reduce the muscle tightness.
3. Do a deep tissue massage to the affected area trying to reach the deep muscles to relieve the tension in the muscle, by applying a deep sustained pressure (refer to the photo)

Let's speak about knee OA today!

Knee OA or knee osteoarthritis is a very common disease mostly starting by the age of 40 and older, it can be defined as degeneration of the knee joint so the surface between the tibia and fibula is no longer smooth due to the wear and tear and the progressive loss of the articular cartilage between the bones which allow the movement to be smooth and free (refer to the photo).

There are two types of osteoarthritis, The first type is the primary and common type due to age this primary type is more common around females in their menopause phase starting from 40 years old due to low levels of estrogen that combine this stage. As we all know estrogen plays a major role in bone health and density therefore low level of estrogen may lead to osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and fractures. Therefore I would advise all women around this age to take calcium sublimates (refer to the photo).

Also, obesity increases the risk factors for primary and secondary OA by increasing the overweight load on the joints leading to early destruction of the joint cartilage.

The second type is secondary OA due to trauma like an unhappy triad (ACL, MCL & medial meniscus injury), an injury to the meniscus increases the risk for early OA as the knee meniscus is part of the knee cartilage.
