JEN Hotel Penang Georgetown, together with Root and Bark, had organized a Natural Dye Workshop for children with special needs.
In the workshop, we guide the kids to make lanterns with natural dyed fabric in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival. The kids are great learners of natural dye techniques and very artistic with the patterns on the fabric. It is always a joy when kids get to express their creativity freely.
We thank JEN Hotel Penang for the invitation to organize and run the workshop in 2019.
The participants of the Natural Dye workshop at Mano Plus had a great time using natural dye to make their products :)

Evelyn’s Journey to discover the hidden wonders of Natural Dye
3.Evelyn met and learned from Mr Chen Ching-Lin and Mrs Ma Yu-Hsiu first in Shenzhen, China and then later in Taiwan. Ever since the introduction of mass produced synthetic dyes in Taiwan, the use of natural dyes has faded away from use in everyday life. Mr Chen and Mrs Ma strives to bring back the traditional craft. Over the decades, they have promoted natural dye successfully via exhibitions and books locally and overseas. They also used the natural beautiful colours of natural dye to create impressive paintings, garments and fashion accessories.

Evelyn's Journey to discover the hidden wonders of Natural Dye
2. Mrs Evelyn meet and learn from Master Huang Ronghua in Beijing, China in 2016. Master Huang has spent more than 4 decades and countless experiments to recover all the dyeing and natural printing methods of ancient China. He has recovered more than 1000 colors derived from natural dyeing techniques from the past.
Evelyn's Journey to discover the hidden wonders of Natural Dye
1. Evelyn meets and learn from Master Sachio Yoshioka in Malaysia and China during 2015 and 2018 respectively.
Master Yoshioka started to lead Somenotsukasa Yoshioka in his 40s to continue his family tradition of textile dyeing that stretched back for five generations since the late Edo Period in the 1800’s. Master Yoshioka focused on reviving ‘forgotten’ natural colours and preserving techniques of natural dyeing. He also gave lectures and workshops across Japan and the world.
“I really appreciate on the chance of meeting him. He shared a lot of important techniques and knowledge on natural dye long thought to be lost to time. I hope that I can pass down the beauty of natural dye to the next generation via Root N Bark by reintroducing natural dye back into the textile industry.” Evelyn Leow

Our Founder, Mrs Evelyn Leow (Textile maker and artist).
She has a background in Textile and Garment Technology from Feng Chia University and worked in textile and garment factories during the 1990s and 2000s. However, as time passes, she found out that the textile industry is unsustainable and current industrial methods are harmful to the environment. Considering this, she does research by herself on making contemporary textile and garment products by using and improving on older generation natural dye techniques of the past. Thus, she started Root n Bark to help further her pursuit.
Her goal of the company is to use environmentally friendly methods to make textiles and garments while maintaining the benefits of current industrial scale fashion products manufacturing like reasonable cost and large quantity production.

At RnB, one of the our Indigo vats which is around 7 years old hasn't been worked on or touched due to the pandemic for 2 years. However, the microorganisms involved in the dye making process are still going strong indicated by the bubbles!
Even with vast amounts of scientific knowledge in the moder world, nature sometimes continues to elude and fascinate us.
RnB Fun Fact:
A portion of the indigo dye in our products are made from few types of local indigo plants in our gardens!
