TREATMENT 03 DAY 07
3rd treatment was done with my new customer together online. I showed her how to use Galvanic Spa and she got it immediately. Happy to have such a smart customer. When you have your why, I will show you how.
Who's with me?
PHAs (polyhydroxy acids like lactobionic acid) are similar to alpha-hydroxy acids but they are more superficial—acting and less irritating. Think of these like a light and bright peeling agent that is more user-friendly. A dry, sensitive skin type with pigment and a little sun damage, for example, might use PHAs followed by moisturizer (or combined) to brighten, smooth, hydrate and plump the skin—quick refresh.
First, you've got your AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids), and that covers your glycolic, citric, and lactic acids. They all have their own strengths, but they mainly work by nibbling away at skin cells to reveal more glowy skin hiding underneath. AHAs can be pretty intense, so depending on the concentration of your product, you probably want to limit your usage to once or twice a week. As always, start off slow and see how you go.
Then you have your BHAs, or beta-hydroxy acids, which is where salicylic acid can be found. This type of acid is brilliant at flushing out blocked pores, which is why you always hear it recommended for things like acne or keratosis pilaris—that rough skin you have that never quite seems to go away.
And then comes PHAs or poly-hydroxy acids—new-gen AHAs if you will. They're a special type of AHA that strengthen the skin's barrier function and fight the signs of aging without the irritation of the classic AHA.
What is PHA?
PHAs, also known as polyhydroxy acids, are the newest acid to take over ingredients lists and news feeds all over the beauty world. PHAs (Poly-hydroxy acids) fall under the AHA family. They are much larger in size compared to the more common AHAs like glycolic and lactic acids. Examples of PHAs are lactobionic acid and gluconolactone. Essentially, their benefits are the same as AHAs.
Because of their larger structure, PHAs do not pe*****te as deeply into the skin but rather work on the outer layers of the skin. PHAs tend to be less sensitizing and gentler as compared to other chemical exfoliants. PHAs are used on the skin for its exfoliating, skin smoothing, moisturizing, and anti-aging benefits. PHA may be a good alternative in people with sensitive skin, including those with rosacea and eczema, who cannot tolerate AHAs and BHAs.
Benefits of PHA include they're Gentle Giants. PHAs are a lot gentler on the skin because they have a larger molecule size. That means they take a little longer to properly sink in, and they'll never travel quite as deep as a straight-up AHA. PHA us non-irritating. If you have sensitive skin you'll probably be able to apply a PHA with little-to-no stinging or irritation. They keep Skin Moist. PHAs are humectants (meaning they retain moisture reserves) and you definitely have a recipe for the most glowing of complexions. They're Regulating. These acids may be best known for their exfoliation properties, but their real claim to fame should be that they come armed with tons of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. PHAs even combat glycation, a process that weakens collagen and elastin in your skin.
How to Choose AHA vs. BHA?
When choosing between AHA and BHA, it comes down to the way in which you want the products to work along with your skin concerns. If your issues are deeper, like cystic acne or just acne in general, you'll want to use either BHA or an AHA/BHA combination, as it will likely be able to better pe*****te the issue.
For an issue like dry skin, however, AHA is your best bet. An AHA/BHA combo might work depending on your skin type, but when your goal is to exfoliate just the top layer of your skin, you should be using an AHA. AHAs and BHAs and their strengths are dependent on the mode and formula. For example, an in-office peel could have a substantial impact on the skin with associated downtime, while an over-the-counter cream containing these ingredients will give a more limited effect that takes time to accomplish the desired result. But given the potential drying properties of humectants, which draw moisture from within, their use should be with intent and purpose not as a daily regimen.
What are BHAs?
BHA stands for beta-hydroxy acid. That ever-popular acne-busting ingredient, salicylic acid? Yep, that's a BHA. BHAs are organic carboxylic acids that work on skin’s surface and deep inside the pore. They are oil-soluble, so it’s most often preferred for normal to oily skin that's prone to bumps, clogs, blemishes, and enlarged pores. While BHAs are structurally similar to AHAs, they differ in their position of the one hydroxyl group.
Users of BHAs will reap the skin-calming properties of the acid (it gets bonus points for being gentle enough for sensitive skin types, including those prone to redness or rosacea). This rings true with the most familiar type of BHA, salicylic acid, too. Salicylic acid (SA) is fat-soluble, so it’s good on oily skin and gives it an enhanced ability to pe*****te pores. These features explain why SA is used in a lot of OTC acne products.
The salicylic acid is known to fight bacteria and can be used to treat calluses and other areas of dry skin. In the highest concentrations, it is used to treat warts. It exerts this effect in a similar way to what AHAs do—by ungluing dead skin cells from each other—but salicylic acid pe*****tes deeply.
What are AHAs?
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are a group of plant and animal-derived acids used in a variety of skincare products. These include daily anti-aging products, such as serums, toners, and creams, as well as occasional concentrated treatments via chemical peels.
There are seven types of AHAs commonly used in products available throughout the skincare industry. These include citric acid (found in citrus fruits), glycolic acid (found in sugar cane), lactic acid (found in sour milk and tomato juice), malic acid (found in apples), tartaric acid (found in grapes), and others.
AHAs are primarily used to . They can also help promote collagen and blood flow, correct from scars and age spots, improve appearance of surface lines and wrinkles, prevent breakouts, your complexion, increase product absorption.
