🔊🔊The 1st award issued by the Anti-sexual Harrasement Tribunal ("the Tribunal") since the Anti-sexual Harrasmentb Act came into force on March 8, 2024. The Respondent or the perpetrator was found liable and ordered to issue an apology.

🔔🔔As of June, 8, a total of 4 cases have been brought to the Tribunal. For all 4 cases, the perpetrators are men aged above 18.

📡📡This historic award surely will send a shockwave to all workplaces in Malaysia. There is now an urgency for the Employers to put in place the necessary guidelines and SOPs pertaining to Anti-sexual Harrasement at workplace.

🎙🎙Equally essential is that both employers and employees must be educated on the Dos and Don'ts of this important issue.

🗓 🗓 On 9-07-2024, Chan Yi Xuan joined Veon Szu & Kok Thye (George Town) as a new intern under our "Discovering Legal Practice" Internship programme 2024.

🔎 🔎 She stood out from so many applications, so we picked her. Why?
She is different from other applicants because:

1. She speaks French;
2. She is an undergraduate at a French university under the Malaysian Public Service Scholarship or JPA scholarship;
3. She is an International Relations and Politics student and not a law student.

Below is a short introduction of herself in her own words:

"Ms Chan Yi Xuan is about to begin her final year as an International Relations student at the Catholic University of Lille, France. Passionate about public international law, she participated in a moot court simulation on territorial disputes to sharpen her advocacy skills and deepen her legal knowledge. During her first-year summer break, she interned at the Embassy of Malaysia in Paris, gaining valuable insights into diplomatic relations and international policy. Now, she’s interning at Veon Szu & Kok Thye under the expert tutelage of Mr Veon Szu Khaw to further her understanding of legal frameworks and how they apply to international relations, building on her previous experience and broadening her expertise in her field. "

💡 💡 So, becoming a new Veon Szu & Kok Thye (George Town) intern? The answer is ---Why not? After all, who says a law firm can only accept law students as its interns?

The Dispute Resolution and Mediation Team of Veon Szu & Kok Thye secured another victory at the Kuala Lumpur High Court last week.

We succeeded in helping our client to quash a Consumer Claim Tribunal Award against them and get the claim remitted back to be heard before another Tribunal President. The learned KL High Court Judge also agreed with us that cost should be made against the consumer who filed the claim against our client, a reputable Wellness company.

Recently, more businesses have been willing to challenge the Consumer Claim Tribunal Awards based on principle, as they feel they have been unjustly wronged. To defend their reputation, they are prepared to spend money on legal fees that, more often than not, more than the claims filed against them by their customers. We are glad that we have been playing our role in helping businesses in protecting them from some unreasonable and vexatious claims made against them.

Team Veon Szu & Kok Thye (George Town) was represented by Veon Szu Khaw and associate Anis Tasnim Mohd Fuad before the KL High Court.

📣📣Entering the year of the Dragon, we at Veon Szu & Kok Thye (George Town) welcome our new intern, Min Yu Deong!

📸📷Unlike our previous interns, she is a medical student, not a law student. She applied to join our "Discovering Legal Practice" internship programme to explore career options and learn more about legal practice.

Notwithstanding her non-legal academic background, we accepted her application for a short internship with our firm. After all, who says legal practice is exclusively for legal students only? Moving forward, we are convinced that legal practice should and must embrace and accept multidisciplinary talents.
