The food of Malaysia is entwined in our history and so elements of Chinese, Indian,

Thai, and, of course, Malay, cuisines, all co-mingle. The results are amazing - layers of

different tastes, piquant mouthfuls, and delightful juxtapositions of clashing flavours.

But it’s not just about eating, however enjoyable that may be. Choosing this kind of

food is also a way towards wellness. Modern science is discovering that many of the

spices and herbs used have very positive health benefits. Many spices are anti-

microbial, which keeps your tummy safe, as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-

fungal.

If you try the yummy Pork Trotter with Black Vinegar, you may like to know that

vinegar helps to even out blood sugar spikes. Or you may like to taste the Sambal

Prawns Petai. This spicy dish marries the delicacy of prawns with a spicy sauce

enlivened with “stink” beans. Don’t worry, cooking tempers their taste considerably!

Many dishes are cooked to individual order – such as the wok cooked Stir-fried

Beans with Minced Pork. You won’t be able to stop eating it. Another very traditional

dish is Loh Bak, which is often served on festive occasions. It’s pork marinated in

Chinese five-spice powder and then rolled up with bean curd skin. You eat it dipped

in soy sauce. Five-spice powder contains cinnamon – a wonderful anti-oxidant and

very positive for brain health. And if you’re in the mood for pork, don’t forget to

sample the Deep- fried Pork Fillet with Red Fermented Bean Sauce.

If you want to go for the curry vibe – try the Nyonya Chicken Curry – marvellous

spices in coconut gravy or the Curry Kapitan, which was served to the “top” people

in the past.
