If there is one particularly famous cigar factory in Havana, it is Partagas. The factory was opened in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagas and it has been making the ci**rs that bear his name ever since.

A Partagas is immediately recognisable by its deep, earthly flavour. The character of its blend springs from a selection of filler and binder to***cos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and chosen for their unmistakable richness of flavour and aroma.

The best known of all Partagas is the Serie D No. 4, the robusto size that formed part of the legendary Partagas alphabet series that dates back to the 1930's. In 2005 a Piramide, the Partagas Serie P No. 2, was added to the range, which fast became a cigar of choice amongst lovers of full flavoured Habanos. In 2011 the Serie D No. 5 and the heavy ring gauge Serie E No. 2 extended the alphabet series once again.

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2 is one of the iconic Cohiba Robusto ci**rs. This is a smooth drawing, complex Cuban cigar that won’t blow your head off!

History
The brand was formed in Cuba in 1865 by José Gener y Batet. Hoyo de Monterrey means ‘hole of Monterrey’, referring to the low position of the plantation which Gener bought.

This band of ci**rs became popular in Britain and the Gener company was soon one of Cuba’s largest cigar factories in the late 1800s.

The Epicure No. 2 is part of Hoyo de Monterrey’s Epicure line, including the Epicure Especial (Toro), the Epicure No. 1 (Toro) and the Epicure Deluxe (Petit Robusto).

Tasting notes
The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 2 is one of the world’s most popular ci**rs, and for good reason. The cigar is totally handmade using the very best to***co leaves in Vuelta Abajo – Cuba’s premier cigar growing region.

The construction is flawless and contains a double band, which gives it a very sophisticated appearance. It provides a pleasant, smooth smoke and strong to***co taste that’s not too overpowering, giving it just enough room for the cocoa, dried fruit and cinnamon flavours to shine through.

Even when the leaves are young it has an even combustion – although it’s best left stored in a humidor for a while. The Hoyo de Monterrey is a cigar for seasoned smokers, however, novices are encouraged to give it a try to see just how complex and flavoursome a fine cigar can be.

Tesseron Lot 76 XO Tradition Cognac
Four generations of savoir-faire have meant that the Tesseron estate in Châteauneuf-sur-Charente possess a truly fine Paradis cellar. They are one of the few Cognac houses that possess three grape varieties, giving them an edge over many producers. The maître de chai creates a unique blend from the different grapes; blending with such expertise to give Cognacs such as the Lot 76 XO Cognac their own unique personality.

The lot number of a Tesseron Cognac is a good indication of the average year of distillation of such a fine elixir. As an Extra Old Cognac, the oldest eaux-de-vie of this Tesseron XO Lot 76 was distilled in 1976, and most of the eaux-de-vies have been aged for over a generation.

Blended exceptionally from a selection of reserve stocks, this Grande Champagne Cognac has been aged to perfection. The Grande Champagne, also known as the Premier Cru, is renowned for its premium chalk soil and limestone subsoil, thanks to a maritime climate and millions of years of gradual fossilization. It is a unique terroir, with sloping hills catching the sunlight at the right time of day, and creating fine, floral eaux-de-vies from its Ugni-Blanc grape variety for the Tesseron Lot 76 Extra Old. Aged in Limousin French oak barrels in Chateauneuf-sur-Charente, this XO Cognac is a wonderful example of Tesseron’s fine expression of the Grande Champagne.

The family name Tamblyn is in recognition of our grandmother’s ancestors who migrated to Australia from Cornwall, England. The Bremerton Tamblyn blend utilises the characteristics of the different varietals to give a wine that is full flavoured and balanced with a very approachable mouthfeel. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the complementary tannin structure, Shiraz adds berry fruit weight, Malbec adds a perfumed lift and intense colour and the Merlot rounds out the palate. The wine is complex but approachable so can be enjoyed now or cellared for a few years.
The grapes for this wine were fermented separately in open top fermenters and matured in new and old French and American barrels for 18 months before blending and bottling.

This treasure trove dates back to the nineteenth century when Abel Tesseron acquired this property and began his collection of rare and priceless cognacs. A tradition continued by his son and grandson Alfred, who runs the business today and who also owns the prestigious Château Pontet-Canet, a Pauillac Classified Growth in 1855.

Abel Tesseron created his own cognac company in 1905, relying at the time on two separate estates, one situated in the Grande Champagne area (Boneuil) and the other in Petite Champagne (Saint-Surin). He adopted a long term policy of building up stocks of eaux-de-vie, carefully conserved in a twelfth century crypt.

These old and rare treasures, besides achieving a great reputation amongst a small circle of connoisseurs, have always been sought after by the big cognac merchants, assured of the fine quality of the eaux-de-vie they would use to complete their blends. Today, thanks to a continual and ever increasing demand, the company is selling more and more of its cognacs under the Tesseron Cognac name.
