I was invited by Professor Wong Sin Kiong of the Department of Chinese Studies, NUS to be guest lecturer on the topic of "Prominent Chinese revolutionaries in Singapore and Malaya".
I started the session with the vision of Father of Modern China, Dr Sun Yat Sen - of a China that is technologically modern, politically independent, actively anti-Imperialist, and every person should be equal with the other. This northstar guided his mission to create, or his three principles of, nationhood, democracy and people's wellbeing. His was a big dream, with many sacrifices, disappointments and failures, and it was not to be realised in many lifetimes. He had said at his dying days in 1925, "The revolution has not yet succeeded, keep up the hard work". If he could see from wherever he is today, he would see that his dream for China has materialised, in technology, absolute poverty, etc.
As a great, great granddaughter of one of Sun Yat Sen's most loyal supporters in my hometown Ipoh, Perak, my dream is for my hometown to be a beacon of hope and opportunities attracting talent from near and afar. My mission, since starting my walk in 2011, is to tell the untold story of my hometown's support of Sun Yat Sen, and create jobs and contribute to economic regeneration by building and promoting this story to create responsible tourism. This is my personal sustainability project, and I've linked it directly to three SDGs (8,9,17) that are featured in this visual - that I conceptualised to be the face of the "Trail of Dr Sun Yat Sen and His Comrades in Ipoh".
For the meaning behind the visual, watch this short video: https://youtu.be/ZGkFINdZijM?si=rezZdAzljwwMyEUp
On a side note, it's very rewarding that the project has been exemplified as one that offers information in multiple languages. Resources are hard to come by, in this instance, translation to multiple languages, but this project aims as far as possible to demonstrate inclusion, for all who wish to learn it and use it respectfully. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/SkBVFxc6yNccaTAV/?mibextid=oFDknk
Deep gratitude to my mentor, and friend, Prof. Wong for always encouraging and supporting me since the start of my journey, and now that I've grown up slightly 😂, for giving me room to share my research in ways that reflect my efforts to preserve and connect yesterday with today and hopefully contribute to a brighter tomorrow for many.
Delighted that the "Trail of Dr Sun Yat Sen and His Comrades in Ipoh" is exemplified as one that offers information in multiple languages. In the spirit of being as inclusive as possible, we've always strived to create access to information for as many people as possible in all we do.
Thank you so much, The Star for this mention.
Clueless in charming Ipoh ASK any local and they will tell you that Ipoh is awash with visitors, both locals and foreigners, especially during the weekends.
Travel has the power to transform places around the world, for better or worse. Interview of Paige McClanahan, author of "The New Tourist: Waking Up to the Power and Perils of Travel" on what it means to be the traveller and the tourist, and also the destination manager and tourism operator. It's everybody's responsibility to leave places the same, if not better, not worse. And that requires behavioural change, and that of course requires 'self' consciousness.
Why it's time to rethink what it means to be a tourist A new book chronicles the power that travel has to transform places around the world, for better or worse – and asks us to consider that the label "tourist" can be a good one.
We planted 35 trees in the names of each participant, including guides and driver, of the study tour of Dr. Sun Yat Sen and His Comrades in Ipoh and Perak on 19 - 20 April 2024. The two days contributed to economic regeneration (hotels, food, shopping, sites visits, etc.) and job creation, and this tree planting initiative goes towards offsetting the environmental footprint of our time. Jharkand is an area in India that uses child labour to mine for mica. In keeping with our project's alignment to the 8 to "Create Decent Work and Economic Growth", we hope that contributing to planting of native species fruit trees on lands of small farm holders would also help to contribute to cultivating alternative economic opportunities for that community.
Wishing all our Muslim friends a lovely celebration!
Wishing everyone a successful lunar new year!

ADVISE regarding the exhibition of the ""Trail of Dr Sun Yat Sen and His Comrades in Ipoh" at the Perak Chinese Amateur Dramatic Association (PCADA).
We've just noticed that the information panels have been moved out of sequence, and we'll be rearranging them ASAP.
In the meantime, the best way to navigate your way around the exhibition is to follow the panel numbers located at the bottom corner of each panel image (left or right side). For instance, see circled parts on this image. Apologies to all visitors for inconvenience.

Why do we keep using this visual? Because we created it to be the face of the Ipoh Sun Yat Sen project. Every aspect of the design represents a value, from colour, to the 4 languages used, to the design, yes, it's pretty, but it's much more than looks. These cards will explain. Tell us what you think.

Guangming Daily commemorates the 156th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Sun Yat Sen on 12 November 2022 by revisiting his views on culture, walking the talk, fear, enlightenment, roots, pride, etc. that united people around the world. The article draws from "The Complete Works of Sun Yat-sen". Here in Ipoh and Perak, Dr. Sun had followers who dreamed his dream, and ardent suporters who are written up in history. Written up or not, we are proud of all our ancestors who dreamed and dared, and made a difference.
