Perak State Government Shocked by Plight of Mother and Son in Dilapidated Flat
Ipoh: The Perak state government is appalled by the distressing situation faced by a mother and her son living in a dilapidated flat. In response, the state will convene a special meeting involving various stakeholders, including the Ipoh City Council (MBI), to address issues related to public welfare.
The meeting, to be chaired by the State Secretary of Perak, Dato' Ahmad Suadi Abdul Rahim, is a direct response to the case of a mother and her son residing in a flat filled with garbage and sewage in Taman Silibin, Ipoh.
This initiative arises from concerns that there may be more families facing challenging living conditions despite receiving assistance from the Department of Social Welfare (JKM).
Chief Minister Dato' Seri Saarani Mohamad emphasized that the state government is deeply committed to addressing such matters to ensure that no citizens are left marginalized.
"It is not impossible that there are more cases like this in Perak if actively sought out. Therefore, the state government will not shy away from its responsibility in this matter," he asserted.
While expressing surprise at the news coverage of the mother and son's situation, Saarani acknowledged the state government's responsibility to assist all segments of the population.
"I admit that the condition of this flat is extremely severe, creating an environment that should not exist in the city of Ipoh. However, we refrain from pointing fingers at anyone. The Department of Social Welfare (JKM) has promptly taken the initiative regarding the mother and son," he added.
Saarani made these statements during a press briefing after visiting the flat in Taman Silibin.
The Chief Minister extended gratitude to those who brought the family's plight to the media's attention, with Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic being the first to report the story of Erwan Dahari, 46, who left his job to care for his elderly mother, Miram Kadir, 77.
A video depicting the dire living conditions of the mother and son in the flat garnered over 50,000 online views and numerous shares.
In response to the media coverage, Miram is now under the care of JKM, while her son requests to continue living in the same flat. Saarani assured that the residence would be cleaned to make it suitable for habitation.
Regarding the flats in Taman Silibin, Saarani noted that two blocks were in a severely deteriorated state. He revealed plans to identify the owners for further action, emphasizing that this was not an isolated case, as many flats in Ipoh are in similar conditions.
