Conservation thrives through community. As the guardians of the forest, strong alliances with the Orang Asli are essential in Tiger conservation efforts, with focused efforts in driving awareness and providing support in addressing threats faced by the indigenous communities - ultimately to build their resilience to future threats and capacity to recognise the urgency for wildlife protection.
Tigers - the symbols of strength, majesty and courage. In celebration of Global Tiger Day, we continue to advocate for increased tiger conservation efforts.
Today, the country's Malayan Tiger population amounts to fewer than 200, with tigers struggling to survive in the forest. Reasons for the gradual decline in the Malayan Tiger population include poaching, illegal trading of tiger parts, and habitat loss.
Since 2016, Maybank has invested more than RM10 million into tiger conservation efforts through the ‘Strengthening Tiger Conservation in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex’ Programme. The programme is now in its third phase, with Maybank pledging an initial RM1.55 million to continue enhancing conservation efforts including the protection and monitoring of tigers, as well as engagement with communities, to allow for a more systematic and holistic approach to protecting the Malayan Tiger for future generations.
Conserving Tigers goes beyond saving a single species. It's about preserving an entire ecosystem.
Together with WWF-Malaysia, great efforts have been made to reduce widespread habitat loss and fragmentation for Tigers and other wildlife within the Belum-Temengor Forest complex. Efforts include conducting camera-trapping surveys at ecological linkages that connect Belum-Temengor and Taman Negara.This allows us to track how wildlife utilise these corridors, and to lobby for their protection, and the protection of critical resources for tiger prey.
The urgency for conservation has never been greater, and the actions we take today will shape the future of our planet, wildlife, and the well-being of generations to come.
Conservation is a collective responsibility we share. Whether it's through reducing waste, supporting sustainable practices, or advocating for environmental policies, every effort counts. Today we celebrate the beauty of our Earth, our commitment to its future and the humans who dedicate their lives to conserving our one and only home. 🌿🌏
