What is Air Quality?
The best definition “Air quality” refers to the condition of the air within our surroundings. Good air quality pertains to the degree to which the air is clean, clear and free from pollutants such as smoke, dust and smog, among other gaseous impurities in the air. Air quality is determined by assessing a variety of pollution indicators. Good air quality is a requirement for preserving the exquisite balance of life on earth for humans, plants, animals and natural resources. As such, human health, plants, animals and natural resources are threatened when pollution in the air reaches high concentrations.
Poor air quality can affect or harm human health and/or the environment. Air quality can be degraded by natural or man-made sources. Natural sources include volcanic eruption, windstorm dust. Man-made sources include pollution from moving vehicles, toxic gases from industries, coal-powered plants, burning wood or other material in the open air, landfills. Both these sources can seriously affect the overall air quality and can lead to severe health problems for humans.
According to British Columbia (BC),
The term “air quality” means the state of the air around us. Good air quality refers to clean, clear, unpolluted air. Clean air is essential to maintaining the delicate balance of life on this planet — not just for humans, but wildlife, vegetation, water and soil. Poor air quality is a result of a number of factors, including emissions from various sources, both natural and “human-caused.”
How is Air Quality Degraded?
Air quality is degraded by the day to day emissions from different air pollution sources. These include stationary sources such as power plants, manufacturing facilities, smelters, motor machines, and burning wood and coal; mobile sources such as trucks, buses, planes and cars; and natural sources such as volcanic eruptions and windstorm dust.
The pollutants from these sources are released into the air, which can affect the health of humans, animals and our environment. The quality of air depends on 3 factors: the amount of pollutants, the rate at which they are released in the atmosphere, and how long they are trapped in an area.
The air pollution sources emit a wide range of pollutants classified under different categories that include Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), particulate matter, Hydrocarbons (HC) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), Lead, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and Smog. In most regions, noticeable air quality degraders include smoke, dust, CO, NOx, SO2, HC, and smog from factories, power plants, automobiles, and smelters, especially around urban and industrial areas.
Many of these air pollutants occur as gases, but some are very tiny solid particles, such as dust, smoke or soot. Air pollution from various sources can affect indoor air as well. Removing the pollutants from indoor air can improve the quality of your indoor air. Indoor air pollutants include cigarette smoke, mold, dust mites, pet dander, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and radon gas.
If air pollutants are in an area with good airflow, they will mix with the air and quickly disperse. Air pollutants tend to remain in the air when there are certain conditions like light winds or mountains that restrict the transport of these pollutants away from an area. When this happens, pollution concentrations can increase rapidly.

Understanding the different types of Soft Starters for your electrical motors. There are different styles of soft starters that control the motor in different ways and offer different features. Some soft starter types are:
1) 1 phase controlled soft starter
When the terms 1 phase, 2-phase, or 3-phase 'controlled soft starter' are used, it refers to the number of sets of thyristors that are being used. 1 phase-controlled device has thyristors only in 1 phase. The remaining phases are directly connected from line to load. 1 phase-controlled device reduces torque shock at the start but does not reduce start current. Also known as torque controllers, these devices must be used in conjunction with a direct online starter.
2) 2 phase controlled soft starter
2 phase-controlled devices have thyristors in 2 phases. The remaining phase is directly connected from line to load. These devices eliminate torque transients and reduce motor start current. The first thing noted when starting a 3-phase motor with a 2-phase controlled soft starter is that the currents in the phases are not equal. Typically, the controlled phases have approximately 30-50% lower current relative to the uncontrolled. When a compact and cost-effective solution is required 2 phase-controlled soft starters can be used. 2-phase soft starters can’t be used with an inside delta connection.
3) 3 phase controlled soft starter
These devices control all three phases, providing the optimum in soft start control. Three-phase control should be used for severe starting situations. In 3-phase controlled soft starters, all three phases will have 2 thyristors/phase. Here 3 phase current will be fully balanced when compared to 2-phase controlled devices. 3-phase soft starters can be connected inside delta.

Solid state motor starters / Soft Starters
A solid state starter or commonly referred to as RVSS (Reduced Voltage Soft Starter) Is another method of reduced voltage starting. Typically used on three lead, three phase motors, they can also be applied to six-lead motors. Conventional Star-Delta starters reduce the voltage to the motor through an electrical mechanical switching method, while solid-state starters reduce the voltage using a solid stage device referred to as SCR.

Reduction of the compressor displacement by a control slide valve.
Screw compressor have slide valve mechanism which is typically used to adjust the flow rate of fixed frequency (50Hz or 60Hz) compressor. The inlet gas is bypassed by moving the slide valve to discharge the side of the screw rotor.
The slide valve in the screw compressor allows an adaptation of the compressor displacement to the power requirement by shifting the start of the compression process through an axial slide of control slide valve by utilisation the Stepped or Infinite control method.

SCRs are mainly used in devices where the control of high power, possibly at high voltage, is needed. The ability to switch large currents on and off makes the SCR suitable for use in medium to high-voltage AC power control applications, such as lamp dimming, regulators and motor control.
One Drive Controls Several Pumps and Fans in Parellel?
Many applications use one or more motors operating in parallel at the same desired speed. Using one Variable frequency drive (VFD) to control these multiple motors provides a host of advantages as summarized below.
-Saves money
-Cuts cabinet size, complexity and design costs
-Can reduce footprint of the motors and driven loads
-Cuts maintenance time and cost
-Reduces inventory stocking requirements
-Reduces control system complexity.
Money is saved because one high horsepower rated VFD is less expensive than multiple low horsepower VFDs. Each VFD requires its own circuit protection, so using one VFD reduces cost in this area as well.
The VFD enclosure can be smaller because one large VFD requires less cabinet space than multiple smaller units. This saves space and money. Design costs are also cut because it’s easier to engineer an enclosure to house one relatively large VFD as opposed to multiple smaller VFDs. One large VFD also produces less heat than multiple smaller units, further simplifying enclosure design and saving energy.
In terms of the motors and connected loads, the footprint can also often be reduced. For example, it may be possible to fit multiple small fans of a smaller size into a confined duct space as opposed to one large fan.
Maintenance time and costs are cut because only one VFD has to be serviced as opposed to multiple smaller VFDs, often of varying sizes. This also reduces inventory stocking requirements. Each motor will be smaller and usually available as on off-the-shelf standard product. Because many of the motors will be identical, spares can be stocked and replaced quickly in a failure.
The overall control system also becomes much simpler. Instead of connecting many VFDs to the main controller, usually a PLC, and synchronizing their operation; only one connection is required. When programming the PLC, only one VFD speed control loop needs to be configured, instead of multiple instances.
Taken in total, the above benefits may justify use of a VFD in applications where using one VFD per motor is cost prohibitive. When this is the case, the application benefits from all of the advantages of operating motors at controlled speeds including reduced energy costs, longer motor life and better operating performance.

Importance of cooling tower fan and its performance.
Basically cooling tower is a heat removal device that uses water to transfer process waste heat into the atmosphere. Common commercial and industrial cooling tower operates on the principle of removing heat from water by ev***rating a small portion of water that is recirculated through the Cooling tower unit. The mixing of warm water and cooler air releases latent heat of v***rization, causing the water to cool.
Every single core components from Cooling Tower count. If a cooling tower fan has become compromised, following cooling tower is going to require more energy to function. Over time, this increase in energy consumption, however small, can have a drastic effect on the amount of power consumed on a monthly basis. Making sure that the fan assembly and blade are in good condition helps to ensure that the Cooling Tower is running as efficiently as possible and is using as little energy as possible.
Adequate cooling tower performance is crucial in benefits energy saving from water cooled chillers in the long run.
We wish you abundance and joyous moments this New Year. It has been enriching for us to have had you as our valued client. Blessed new year 2022❤️
What is VFD?
The squirrel-cage induction motors are the most common three-phase motors used in industrial applications. In the modern industrial applications the preferred method of speed control for squirrel-cage induction motors is to vary the frequency of the supply voltage and the system used for this purpose is well known as variable frequency drives or VFD.
As such Variable frequency drive controls the speed, torque, and rotating direction of an AC induction motor. It takes fixed voltage and frequency from AC input and converts it to a variable voltage and frequency AC output.
As the frequency of the voltage is reduced, the inductive reactance of the motor stator winding is also reduced.
Therefore, in VFD, voltage applied to motor is also reduced with frequency to prevent the motor from being damaged by excessive current.
VFD system consisting of the three main core components in sub-systems: AC motor, main drive controller assembly, and drive/operator interface.
Understanding compressor burnout.
Proper and adequate preventive maintenance is crucial for HVAC/R compressor can last longer than its expected lifespan. However, any compressor in any system will eventually reach the end of its service life. When a faulty compressor needs to be replaced, the technician must identify the cause of failure before installing a replacement compressor. This is extremely important because if the issue has caused the initial breakdown is left unaddressed, it may affect the compressor replacement as well.
Compressor failure can be traced back to many different issues. Motor burnout is one of them. Also referred as compressor burnout, motor burnout is a specific type of failure that typically results from high temperatures in motor windings. Operating temperatures that exceed the maximum allowable limits of insulation classes will accelerate winding insulation degradation. Ultimately insufficient insulation between motor windings often leads to short circuits and motor burnout.
Heat buildup in a motor can occur due to specific factors, such as:
Acidity in system – When air or moisture enters into the system a chemical reaction takes place.
Improper cooling – Following three conditions that could lead to motor overheating include: starting the motor at a wrong current value; continuously running a motor which is rated for intermittent duty applications at or below its duty cycle; and continuously operating the motor in high ambient temperatures. For internal compressor motors, high ambient temperatures usually result from the compressor overheating. Some common causes of compressor overheating are lack of external cooling, poor ventilation, short cycling, low suction pressure, high head pressure, lack of lubrication, excessive wear and tear, and electrical problems. If any of these factors prevent the motor from cooling down properly between cycles, it will become increasingly hotter with each cycle.
Excessive friction – Excessive friction between components in motor often results from a combination of misalignment and vibration. Although all electric motors produce vibration as they rotate, a motor that becomes misaligned can generate a higher level of vibration. This may precipitate a series of mechanical issues, including bearing degradation, bolt breakage, and wear and tear of coupling blocks. Components that are beginning to wear can cause excessive friction, which will place extra load on the motor. Besides decreasing the motor’s efficiency, that extra load will cause the motor to draw excessive current and overheat.
Electrical Overload – Electrical overload conditions can be caused by short circuited conductors, as such a high voltage supply, or a low voltage supply which causes the motor to draw in more current in order to maintain its torque. As the motor is forced to draw in more current than its windings can carry efficiently and safely, overload conditions can lead to the motor overheating and damage to winding insulation during long run.
Short Cycling – Short cycling occurs when a compressor motor turns on and off repeatedly or due to extremely low load condition. Since a motor draws more current during starting than when it’s operating, short cycling can increase energy consumption. As well, starting a motor before it has a chance to dissipate the heat buildup from starting will further increase its temperature. Short cycling condition may also lead to more starts per hour than the maximum allowable limit recommended by the manufacturer. All these can significantly shorten the lifespan of your compressor motor.
Electrical problems – Electrical problems such as surge voltages, phase loss, and voltage unbalance are unpredictable events that usually happen suddenly and promoting great impact on compressor motors, potentially causing overheating. Other causes of compressor motor burnout include low insulation resistance, moisture in the surrounding environment, improper lubrication, corrosion inside the motor, and loose mechanical and electrical connections.
May the lights of Diwali bring alot of happiness and success in your life.
Importance of descalling from Condenser water systems.
In the nature when water is heated or ev***rated, solid formation called scale often is left behind. This scale formation can affect the efficiency of water-cooled systems and the overall life of the equipment. Scale can form thick deposits on heat transfer areas, reducing water flow, decreasing heat transfer and causing high head of operating pressure. The presence of scale also forces the system’s compressor to work harder than usual. Aside from increasing energy costs, the extra demand placed on the compressor can affect equipment lifetime and prevent the compressor from achieving ideal and optimum capacity. In fact, it does not take much scale : a 0.125” thick deposit can affect capacity by 20 percent (refer to table below). Regular preventive or periodic maintenance service can detect and eliminate scale from the water cooled systems and beneficial in cost saving for the long run. Courtesy from NuCalgon e news.

In the modern industrial control Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is an user/operator interface or dashboard that connects a person to a machine, system, or device. While the following term can technically be applied to any screen that allows a user to interact with a device, HMI is most commonly used in the context of industrial process, building automation, chiller control, and even plant monitoring.
Although HMI is sharing the most common term in this technology, it is sometimes referred to as Man-Machine Interface (MMI), Operator Interface Terminal (OIT), Local Operator Interface (LOI), or Operator Terminal (OT). HMI and Graphical User Interface (GUI) are similar but not synonymous. GUIs are often leveraged within HMIs for visualization capabilities.
HMIs communicate with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) that consist of multiple digital and anlogue input/output points or sensors that hooked up together and provide display information for user/operator to view. HMI screens can be used for a single function, like monitoring and tracking, or for performing more sophisticated operations, such as switching machines/equipment off or increasing speed via VSD control, depending on how they are implemented.
Back to the past on May 1922, Willis Carrier unveiled his single most influential innovation, the centrifugal refrigeration machine or well known as chiller. Basically a centrifugal compressor is acts very much similar to centrifugal fan, compressing the v***r flowing through it by spinning it from the center of an impeller wheel radially outward, allowing centrifugal forces to compress the v***r. Some machines use multiple impellers to compress the refrigerant in stages.
Centrifugal chillers are available in sizes ranging from 70 to 2,500 tons factory-assembled and up to 9,000 tons field-assembled. They use HCFC-123, HFC-134a, or HCFC-22 refrigerants.
Chillers that use HCFC-123 currently have the highest efficiencies, down to 0.49 kilowatts per ton (kW/ton) at full load and ARI conditions. Although full load efficiency is often cited in sales literature and energy codes, it is usually not the most important metric of efficiency in practice. Because most chillers rarely operate under full load conditions less than 2 percent of annual run hours in most cases it is usually more important to consider chiller efficiency at "off design" conditions when the chiller delivers only a fraction of its full cooling capacity.
Although HCFC-123 machines cannot achieve very low temperatures, this does not limit their use in most space cooling applications. The best HFC-134a chiller available provides an efficiency of 0.55 kW/ton at full load and ARI conditions. Although HCFC-22 chillers are typically less efficient, they are occasionally selected because they may be smaller in size than chillers of comparable capacity charged with other refrigerants.
