"Doctor, I am very scared."

Those were the trembling words Sarah (not her real name) uttered when she stepped into my office two weeks ago. As I observed her visible anxiety, I knew it was crucial to provide a calming atmosphere.

After spending time reassuring her, Sarah explained that another dentist had referred her to a specialist for her complicated wisdom tooth removal. However, her friends recommended seeking a second opinion from me.

Taking a careful look at Sarah's 3D and panoramic x-rays, I discovered her lower right wisdom tooth was slightly longer than usual. It was also deeply impacted and perilously close to her nerve—a situation that warranted the initial recommendation for a specialist. Additionally, the presence of an abnormally shaped root further complicated the procedure.

Despite the initial apprehension, I explained the procedure to Sarah and shared recent successful cases to instil confidence. Finally, she entrusted me with her surgery.

To alleviate any discomfort, I administered local anaesthesia with extra care, prioritizing a painless experience for Sarah. After engaging in friendly conversation for a few minutes to distract her mind, I initiated the procedure swiftly and efficiently. Remarkably, within 10 minutes, her troublesome tooth was successfully removed.

Sarah's astonished expression spoke volumes. "That was fast! I didn't feel anything at all."

Gone was the fear and apprehension that had plagued Sarah moments before. In its place was an ear-to-ear smile, radiating relief and gratitude.

Yesterday, she came for her post-surgical review and was all smiles. "I didn't need those painkillers you gave me, doctor."

Everything went smoothly after the surgery, and she suffered no downtime at all.
