When we learn from the numbers, we will see the future.
10.88 Billion:
It has always been referred as a wake-up-call number when we enter the data era. More than 10 billion records of the users were exposed by Cam4, an adult live streaming website in 2020. It is still the largest reported data leakage as of April 2023, leaking 7TB of personally identifiable information, including name, emails, hashed passwords, payment logs with card type and currency etc.
CAM4 is extremely lucky that a security firm found their exposed database rather than cybercriminals. But what will happen if the latter ones got first? Blackmail and sextortion scams are the top risks. Criminals often use data stolen from sites like CAM4 in these criminal activities. Had criminals acquired this data, predictably, Granity Entertainment(CAM4's parent company) would have faced massive lawsuits and possible prosecution and fines under Europe's GDPR. Aside from blackmail and sextortion scams, cybercriminals could have used the CAM4 user data in a credential stuffing attack. Credential stuffing attacks occur when criminals use credentials from one breach to hack into another website or application. The problem with this is that if hackers breach one of user’s accounts, they can access all the accounts using the same credentials, no matter how strong the password may be. Often these details are sold on the dark web, exposing compromised account to various cybercrimes.
4.45 million:
According to IBM report, the global average cost of a data breach in 2023 was all time high of USD 4.45 million, a 15% increase over 3 years. Due to the large costs business will suffer over data breach, 51% of organizations are planning to increase security investments, including incident response (IR) planning and testing, employee training, and threat detection and response tools. In the long run, the total savings recoup the initial security investment largely. The average savings for organizations that use security AI and automation extensively is USD 1.76 million compared to organizations that don’t.
Cyber criminals are not going away and the level of sophistication of attacks can only advance continuously. Businesses must address the weak points of the existing defences, otherwise huge costs and possible losses of business may occur anytime.
Let’s take a glance at what happened this week.
The top news: Two former Tesla employees were behind a data breach that compromised personal information of more than 75,000 people including staff.
1. Tesla has acknowledged that a data breach affecting over 75,000 employees was carried out by insiders within the company. The electric car manufacturer disclosed in a data breach notice submitted to the attorney general of Maine that an internal investigation uncovered that two former employees had leaked personal information of more than 75,000 individuals to a foreign media outlet.

2. A data breach at a Brisbane-based telemarketer, has impacted some of Australia’s most well-known charities, exposing personal information from thousands of donors to the dark web. This attack happened at Pareto Phone, a third-party tele-fundraising supplier which collects donations and services for more than 70 Australian charities.

Let’s have a quick look at what happened in last week 👁️🌎.
1.Threads’ data collection issue is concerned. Meta’s new text-based conversation platform Threads launched with a bang earlier last month, surpassing 100 million sign-ups less than a week. Some experts think Threads collect more information than Twitter or many of the other Twitter alternatives.

2.WhatsApp is rolling out Telegram-like instant video messages that let you respond in chat with videos up to a minute long. In addition to Telegram, Snapchat and FaceTime are also among the service providers offering similar functions. While instant video messages might not persuade users to sign up, it might keep WhatsApp fans from drifting toward the competition.

3.Bot accounts and tweets from Twitter owner Elon Musk amplified the prices of FTX-listed cryptocurrencies, such as PEPE and PSYOP, according to a Network Contagion Research Institute study published Wednesday, which took a close look at the sort of spam accounts that Musk recently claimed have been mostly tamed.

4.Researchers poke holes in safety controls of ChatGPT and other chatbots. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the Center for A.I. Safety in San Francisco found a way of circumventing the safety measures on all the major chatbots platforms to generate nearly unlimited amounts of harmful information.

5.Singapore government sees rise in security incidents amid increased data sharing. During the fiscal year, the government completed the deployment of technical measures to improve the logging and monitoring of data transactions, which would help detect high-risk or suspicious activities. Personal data of 1.5 million SingHealth patients was compromised in 2018 in what was described as Singapore's most serious data security breach.
https://zdnet.com/article/singapore-government-sees-rise-in-security-incidents-amid-increased-data-sharing/…
The Barbie movie has gone viral again, which reminds us of the doll's data privacy issues in 2015.
'Barbie' is definitely a big hit in theaters this week. The world’s most famous doll is brought to the big screen in a cotton-candy-pink extravaganza. However, this adorable doll sometimes doesn't behave nicely. In 2015, Mattel unveiled 'Hello Barbie', which was discontinued two years later after its launch. Cybersecurity specialists found a number of significant security weaknesses in the technologies underlying Hello Barbie, an Internet-connected doll that listens to children and uses artificial intelligence to respond. The doll’s functions raised privacy violation concerns. The Washington Post referred to this Barbie as a hackable Barbie because it’s easy for an attacker to create a Barbie-labeled WiFi hub to steal data. Data breaches can occur in any form of communication, even a child's communication with a toy. Vigilance on data security is a necessity and imperative.
