Goodbye Louis Vuitton. China’s Gen Z leans into ‘dupe economy’ as growth prospects stall

These days, the Chinese are spending their more limited funds on so-called “pingti” products, high-quality replicas of branded goods known in English as dupes. Some are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing, while others are inspired by the original design and offer more colors or textures. The popularity of this product category is soaring as consumer confidence in China nears a historic low, according to analysts.

The “obvious” economic slowdown has resulted in social media searches for dupes tripling from 2022 to 2024, said Laurel Gu, a Shanghai-based director of Mintel, a market research firm.

Gu said that unlike 10 years ago when Chinese shoppers, the world’s top luxury spenders, were clamoring for Western goods from famous brands, consumers are now increasingly turning to more affordable alternatives, a trend that is becoming “the new mainstream.”

Dupes can be considerably cheaper than their branded rivals. A pair of Lululemon’s (LULU) Align yoga pants costs 750 yuan ($106) on its official Chinese website. By contrast, a search of popular e-commerce sites including Tmall yields dozens of other options, often using Lulu in their store names, touting similar leggings for as little as $5 and claiming to be of comparable quality.

Cautious consumers

A year and a half after China reopened its borders following the Covid-19 pandemic, consumer confidence is still struggling to recover, economists at investment bank Nomura wrote in a research note earlier this month.

“Why dupe? Pay cut, of course!” she quipped.

To put that in perspective, they said, it’s as if each three-person household in China has lost around $60,000, an amount that is almost five times China’s per capita gross domestic product.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2024

The Capella Bangkok didn’t have the easiest of beginnings. It opened in 2020, in the first year of a global pandemic that had the hospitality industry on its knees.

However, just four years later, this sanctuary overlooking the Chao Phraya River has taken the top spot in the second edition of the World’s 50 Best Hotels list.

Asian success

Capella Bangkok was one of four hotels in the Thai capital to make the Top 50, with the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River appearing at No. 12 and No. 14 on the list respectively, while The Siam was at No. 26.

It was very much Asia’s night, with seven out of the top 10 hotels being from the region.

Hong Kong was represented by the Rosewood at No. 3 and The Upper House at No. 5, while the 137-year-old Raffles Singapore – birthplace of the Singapore Sling cocktail – was in sixth.

In eighth place, Soneva Fushi in the Maldives was also winner of the Lost Explorer Best Beach Hotel Award 2024. After all, this is a resort so dedicated to barefoot luxury that guests hand over their shoes on arrival, and they are not returned until it’s time to leave.

The 45-story skyscraper Bulgari Tokyo, at No. 22, won the Nikka Best New Hotel Award 2024.

Man vs. Machine: AI is fast replacing human tasks.

“You can’t be running an innovative company without seriously considering these technologies. You run the risk of being left behind,” Duke finance professor John Graham.

Nearly half (46%) of large US firms plan to use AI within the next year to automate tasks previously done by employees. Those tasks include everything from paying suppliers and doing invoices to financial reporting.

The CFO Survey found that companies say they are using automation to increase product quality (58% of firms); increase output (49%), reduce labor costs (47%) and substitute for workers (33%).

Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, stressed that for a number of years it will be a co-pilot, not a pilot.

“It’s job transformation. Human jobs will be replaced — but will be replaced by other humans using AI."

But curious diners hoping for a chance to sample what the two world leaders were served won’t find the dishes in Paris.
For that, they’ll have to head to Hong Kong restaurant Plaisance, which has launched a special China-France State Dinner Experience menu that’s available till late June.

In addition to the Plaisance restaurant in Hong Kong, his restaurant group now has five establishments in mainland China.

At Colagreco’s Plaisance restaurant in Hong Kong, diners will get to sample all three of the dishes Xi and Macron were served during the recent state dinner.

For those who have a bit more time than Xi and Macron, the restaurant also offers a longer menu with three additional dishes from the Mirazur and Plaisance restaurants.

The cost of the three-course option starts from 1,888 Hong Kong dollars ($241), while the six-course menu is 2,888 Hong Kong dollars ($369).

In 2019, he became the first non-French chef to earn three Michelin stars in France with Mirazur. It was crowned the No.1 restaurant at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards that same year.

Pierre Gagnaire, chef of the eponymous three-Michelin-star restaurant in Paris, was in charge of the evening’s main course.

The dessert, strawberries and verbena pavlova, created by Délicatisserie founder and superstar pastry chef Nina Métayer, wrapped up the evening.
Fromagerie Quatrehomme, a cheesemonger and refiner in Paris since 1953, curated the cheeses for the event.

All the serveware used during the dinner was provided by La Manufacture de Sèvres, which was founded in 1759 and is one of France’s principal royal/national porcelain factories.
