Today, on the International Day of the Girl, we put focus on Astrid Lindgren's most iconic character, Pippi Longstocking. Pippi is a girl rebel and a gender role model, who has inspired children all over the globe since 1945. In her storybook world, she saves children from adult laws and stands up for the weak and oppressed.
When the book was published in 1945, it received a very positive reception. However, after a year or so, objections arose that Pippi was tasteless and lacked manners, and that she might, in the worst case, inspire other children to mimic her behavior. A debate about Pippi emerged.
Astrid Lindgren entered the debate and defended all children who simply want to explore the world in a safe environment. Astrid wrote that children should be treated with the same respect as adults and coined the phrase that has been quoted countless times: "Give children love, more love, and even more love, and the common sense will come by itself."

Oyez!Books collaborates with Gadian stationery products
Picture book publisher Oyez!Books has collaborated with Gadian stationery products for a range of personalised folders.
Kuala Lumpur. 20 June 2024. Always on the lookout for ways to expand their marketing reach, Oyez!Books has identified Gadian stationery as a partner. Gadian is a member of Fico Stationery, a stationery company with more than 20 years experience producing quality stationery products. A key feature of their stationery is the possibility for customers to customise their products.
"We have many illustrations from our books and we like to work with our illustrators to expand their reach. So their illustrations are not only on books but also on other products. In turn, this is a good way to promote their books," says Linda Tan Lingard, managing director of Oyez!Books.
For a start, Oyez!Books has identified the works of 10 illustrators to be featured on the gadian folders. They are Yusof Gajah, Nor Azhar Ishak, Lim Lay Koon, Emila Yusof, Jainal Amambing, Basari Mat Yasit, Tan Su En, Chooi Ling Keiong, Nur Azmi Mohktar, and Umi Kalthum Ngah.
Apart from promoting books, Linda hopes to grow their licensing division. "Licensing is commonly done in other countries but less so in Malaysia maybe because of the lack of knowledge of licensing as a good resource and perceived difficulties in working with individuals as well as legal matters," said Linda.
Linda who is the President of the Children's Picture Book Association of Malaysia aims to introduce licensing to the association's members and can assist both licensee and licensor.
