Thursday 12th September, a return to perform for a corporate event held at the Sheraton PJ - the Conference of the International Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).

The prep began from last week. "Odissi" dance, was the event company's request to our my friend, Lawrence Sackris another important Odissi teacher, and artistic director of Angika Fine Arts, working closely with the Ministry of Arts and Culture. Lawrence was kind to offer the invitation to me/GSD. He was the coordinator.

Of course!! I took it up. For my young ones who needed the chance, the experience and the income. 🙏🏼🌹✨
Lam Arunagiri Sangametra Lam & Peraveen Maniam were eager, willing to work and obeyed the request to dance Kalyan Pallavi.
It was an honour and my joy to meet Shenola Gonzales, the current President of ICAEW. Shenola.. I knew as a yoga practitioner with Vasugi from Swarupa Yoga, and a dance student, too. I met her in 2011.... Today, she was the center of such an important networking corporate powerhouse!! 💐💪🏻

Meeting new faces, fulltime performers of JKKN, was lovely! So much fun we had together in the few hours.
I was reminded of my years with the TFA going to corporate events, with the late Mr Kanagasivam for government shows, Citrawarna, APEC, and sitting in hotel lobbies, ballrooms, dressing areas, ...dressing rooms, waiting, having our meal packs, learning, practicing and making new friends with the Malay & Chinese fulltime dancers.
Ooo...it's been many years now. Since COVID-19, last corporate event for a client was in 2018, and a family wedding in 2022...

The performance went SWELL!!

Before we took leave at 10pm something ..we had the blessed chance to meet the 1st Malay Chartered accountant in this country...Tan Sri Dato Hanafiah Hussain!! 😃🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🌹✨ He was being wheeled towards the lift and, we were leaving too. We paused as he called out. A big group of people surrounded us, obviously to see this iconic legend responding so well to us. The dancers were out of costume but Tan Sri recognized them. I was surprised...taken aback and HAPPY!!!

Indian classical dancers being applauded even after out of gear by a seemingly elderly figure perhaps in his late '70s or early '80s.
The manner in which he wished the dancers, the time he took to congratulate us, the wish he asked if we were paid well, hoping that it was so, and the aura of positivity was just so loving, embracing, kind, affectionate, considerate, compassionate, and truly exemplary if Malaysian hospitality and attentiveness for culture and performance during events like this where people are only there to network and be seen. But...he said, "I watched you dance. It was magical. I enjoyed it so much, Thank you all!".

My habit - I needed a picture of this icon who was featured in the montage videos in all his years along with many, many....leading "big guns" in the corporate world as accountants and global CEOs. In all this, we were just Odissi performers, GOOD, & beautiful, professional in our own way.
Someone important, noticed us! 🙌🏼🌿🥰👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 We are minority as they tell us, but we felt NO 1 last night for this support.

What a final takeaway - Great!! So proud ...joyful and content. The wait and long hours were worth it. God bless my GSD dancers and the hardwork we put in.

Sunday September 8th Kathak Classes
8am
930am till 1130am in preparations for Navarathri.

This will be the 2nd time that our school students, taking up Kathak will be presented in temples.

It took a while to reset after COVID-19 and as the young tutors - Giri and Sangametra were also in the midst of finishing higher studies.
Kathak was reintroduced from 2023, in this studio.
Last Sunday Giri invited Yeshothen, a tabla accompanist who is a graduate of the TFA, to come play for his students. They are a happy lot! 😀🙏🏼

Live accompaniment is a rare chance.
For students in India, it's normal or if you are part of a bigger arts institution, it's also easier to work together but when you are small, independant, it's slightly challenging and you got to work budgets, timing and prepare to set or choreograph live as with accompaniment for rehearsals.

It's all for positive purposes - gaining experience, enrichment, enhancement, and also to foster friendship between young practitioners in the field.

It feels good. Lucky students. 💐👏🏼😘
Catch them perform their basics on October 5th at the Sri Dewi Mahamariamman temple in Sungai Buloh.
