The Chitties of Melaka 28/05/2024

The Chitties, or Chettis, of Melaka are among the earliest Peranakan communities in Malaysia. They are descendants of South Indian traders who married local women during the early days of the Melaka Sultanate. These intermarriages have created a unique and vibrant heritage, blending their Hindu beliefs with the traditions of their neighbors. This influence is evident in their language, cuisine, attire, and religious and cultural practices. Although well-known in Melaka, the Chitties remain relatively unknown in other parts of Malaysia.

The authors' initial study of this community sparked a deep interest in their way of life. Supported by the Department of Museums Malaysia, they have documented their findings in this book. The aim is to enhance understanding and appreciation of the Melaka Chitties.
