The wines from Tua Rita have been well regarded and rated for decades now, with a long track record of excellence and ageing ability. The Giusto di Notri is their flagship Cabernet blend, often tasted against cru classe Bordeauxs. The pair of Syrahs are more recent additions to the stable of wines but no less impressive. Finally of course, is the iconic Redigaffi, a pure Merlot that is among the bracket of Super Tuscans such as Masseto, to rival the best of the French Pomerols such as Petrus.
Mr Giovanni Frascola, the 3rd generation owner of the winery will be hosting the dinner to share the secrets of his family winery and taste together, the core of the wine range of the winery.
Our Head Chef Kim of Proof Pizza and Osteria Emilia, has crafted a more robust meat focused Italian menu to pair with the robust, intense and vibrant wines to be served on the night.

October brings the visit of a good friend of mine, the owner and winemaker of the famous Sicilian winery Gulfi, Matteo Catania.

Matteo is recognised as the "Guardian of the Terroir" of his family vineyards, mainly centred on the sub-region of Pachino, the Ragusa region, recently granted DOC status in Sicily. There are 4 recognised Grand Cru vineyards in the region and Matteo continues his father's tradition to farm these low yielding bush trained Nero d'Avola vines. Gulfi is the foremost proponent of this native Sicilian grape that is known to be fruit driven but not often aged. In the hands of Vito, his father and now Matteo, they have shown the ageing potential and high quality possible with Nero d'Avola, in this verdant corner of Sicily by the sea.
Ratings of Gulfi wines continue to bear testament to this commitment to being the flagbearers of this grape. In addition, the dinner will also feature the noble Caricante white grape cultivated in the soils of Mt Etna and the Nerello Mascalese black grape of Mt Etna, which is so loved by many lovers of Italian wines, Nebbiolo and Pinot like in its filigreed fine texture and pure red fruit. Gulfi in essence, presents wines from the two quality wine regions of Sicily, a true insight into the quality wine world of this enchanting island.

The second Pinot Noir-focused wine dinner in October features Burn Cottage Burn Cottage. For those of you who Pinot-philes who follow the recent trends, with global warming increasingly having impact on the traditionally cooler climate sites, there is increasing attention on the cooler regions that grow grapes, especially Pinot Noir. Central Otago has always been recognised as a quality Pinot Noir producing region, but in recent years, the quality levels have become even more elevated with greater vine age, use of high quality clones and greater winemaking expertise. This has led to increasingly complex savoury nuances being incoporated into the wines.
I am not ashamed to admit that in blind tastings, Burn Cottage Pinot Noirs with some age, often fool me into guessing Vosne Romanee as an origin. Such is the quality level and ratings have been increasingly impressive for their wines, elevating them into the very best bracket of NZ Pinot Noirs.
We have with us Andy Crozier, from Burn Cottage itself, to share the secrets behind the wines success and lofty reputation in recent years.

Burn Cottage
The month of October brings the triple blessings of the visits of the representatives of three high quality Pinot Noir focused producers, Adelsheim and Cristom from Oregon, USA, as well as Burn Cottage from Central Otago, New Zealand. First up the Oregon mailer below.
Adelsheim is one of the founding wineries in Oregon, established by David Adelsheim in 1971 and still run by him in his indefatigable style. I have met David a few times now and his passion for his winery as he ages gracefully into his 80s, is truly admirable. His wines are refined, elegant and focused, showing its old vine intensity but never overly extracted, always fresh. Adelsheim is located in the northern WIllamatte Valley, in the cooler Chehalem Mountains subzone. His wines are mainly sold within the USA, but now he is starting to venture out to distribute his wines internationally.
Cristom requires less introduction, being more recognised internationally and also highly lauded by wine critiques and located in the Eola Amity Hills District, which has largely volcanic soils. The Pinot Noirs are spicy and perfumed, with layers of pure red fruit. The Chardonnay also is very Burgundian, with green fruit, a kiss of cedar spice and freshness, with underlying minerality.
This is possibly the first time two top Oregon wineries are presented side by side in Malaysia, so its a truly unique opportunity for those of you who like cool climate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. I am an enthusiastic proponent of Oregon wines, as they approximate the most closely to Burgundy in style, for me. Matilda Hui, a representative for both wineries, will be on hand to navigate us through this dinner and discover the nuances of wines from this cool climate quality focused wine region.

Six French wines have been selected as an option to be specially paired plus a Junmai Daiginjo Sauvage Sake from the respected Kuheiji. All wines are highly regarded from reputed producers from across France.
We start with a Champagne from Pierre Gimonnet, a brioche kissed and taut Chardonnay-based wine. We then move on to a Chablis from a top Premier Cru site, Butteaux from Pattes Loup. We then feature a Marc Morey les Vergers 1er Cru Chassagne Montrachet 2019, a classical white Burgundy. Then the fragrant and complex duo of Sylvie Esmonin Gevrey Chambertin 2017 and the cult Domaine des Tours Cote du Rhone Reserve 2017 from the famed Chateau Rayas stable. The final red is the prestigious Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge 2014 from Pessac Leognan, paired with the main course of duck. At RM150++ per pax, this represents outstanding value, priced as a treat, so to say, below the market value of these wines.

Hi folks, on short notice, we have a visit from Laura Zanini, the Export Director of Vie di Romans, one of the most prestigious Friuli producers. Some of you may not be familiar with this Italian region bordering Slovenia. It is a pristine cool climate wine-making region, making world class white wines and selected reds as well. Vie di Romans has surged to the very top of the quality ladder in Italian wines in the past decade, with stellar reviews and ratings. This is a rare chance to delve into an emerging world class wine region, guided insightfully by Laura.
Our chefs have paired a menu with the fresher style of wines we will be enjoying, though the Merlot 2018, is medium to full bodied, complex and layered with dark fruits, perfect with the grilled steak. After a run of wine dinners, August will bring a unique and exclusive Wine Masterclass, showcasing the wines of Travaglini from Gattinara. In wine circles, the recent buzz in the wake of global warming, is the seeking of cooler sites for winegrowers. This is in turn has benefited wineries that have been traditionally been sited in so called marginal regions, where the cool weather has posed challenges to ripening grapes in the past.

The month of July brings two very exciting Vintry-exclusive Wine Masterclasses. We will have with us, Wong Yin-How's good friend and fellow Stage Two MW candidate, Joel Payne, to lead two insightful masterclasses.
MASTERCLASS 1 with LUNCH
France vs the World. A comparative tasting of 7 iconic French wines against 7 non-French challengers
The first masterclass is what I christen, the Judgment of KL, inspired by the infamous Judgment of Paris in 1976. This was the tasting where American Napa Valley wines were judged blind by respected French wine critiques, to be superior to the iconic French wines of that era. Stags Leap Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon for example, being judged superior to luminaries such as Chateau Haut Brion and Chateau Mouton Rothschild or Montelena Chardonnay preferred over Roulot.
This tasting will pit 7 classic French wines, semi blind against their comparable brethren from other countries. Attendees will be told which two wines are being tasted in each flight, and after some discussion and observations, led by Joel and myself, the wines will be revealed. It is meant to be a fun and instructive tasting, comparing wines of largely similar age, quality and grape composition. We hope through this tasting, we can discern nuances and deepen our understanding of the great wines of the world, both familiar and less so. Pours will be tasting portions (50ml), due to the quantity of wines to be served. Among the famous wines we will taste include Chateau Haut Brion, Chateau Angelus, Stags Leap Cellars, Tua Rita Redigaffi and Domaine Chevalier Blanc.

We traverse the breadth of Italy from north to south, extending east towards Friuli bordering Slovenia. The month of June, heralds the highlight Wine Dinner of the Year for Vintry, namely a tasting of most of the wines of the legendary Chateau Rayas, from the Southern Rhone. The Grenache-based reds are ethereal, chameleon-like in the exotic and fragrant expressions of this grape. Truly one of the great wines of the wine world.

The menu is paired by Chefs Whye and Kelly, with a leaning towards the cuisine of the Rhone Valley. From the classic Bouillabaise inspired by seafood sourced from the Mediterranean Sea to be paired with the whites, to the duck and lamb meat courses to be paired with the Grenache stars from the stable of owner, Emmanuel Reynaud.
Emmanuel is a farmer and winemaker at heart and rarely ever travels overseas for events, the wines will have to speak on his behalf. I remember my first visit 16 years ago to his hallowed and rustic cellars in the quiet bucolic corner of the Rhone. He pulled out a Chateauneuf du Pape bottle which was un-labelled, served me blind and asked me to guess the vintage. Thankfully I did, very nervously but correctly, which to this day, makes me wonder, if I did not, would I have secured the privilege to represent Chateau Rayas in Malaysia.
