Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification - Industry Wave 3
Date: 10 May 2023, Saturday, 9.00am – 12.30pm
Topic: Root Cause Analysis, Statistical Process Control, Test
Instructor: Dr. Hasnida Ab Samat
(assisted by Ir. Dr. Nur Amalina Muhammad, and Ms. Anis Masturina)
Class #5 commenced with the final review of the HoM Simulation for Round 3. Participants achieved a finalized call time of 27.07 seconds, below the established control limit of 60 seconds.
The session then delved into Root Cause Analysis, emphasizing four Lean tools: the Fishbone diagram, Pareto chart, Effort-Impact diagram, and Prioritization Matrix. Participants had the opportunity to create a Pareto chart using M&M candies. Creating a Pareto chart with M&M candies offers a visually engaging and hands-on experience, fostering practical understanding, group collaboration, and a memorable application of Pareto analysis principles in real-world scenarios.
In the later part of the day, the class transitioned to Statistical Process Control topic. Four tools were introduced: the control chart, run chart, scatter plot, and histogram. Participants actively engaged with the SPC XL software to draw charts, utilizing their height data for the activity. The hands-on experience with the software generated enthusiasm among the participants.
To conclude the training, a one-hour test was administered to assess the participants' understanding and application of the concepts covered throughout the class.
Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification -Industry Wave 3
Date: 9 May 2023, Saturday, 9.00am - 5.00pm
Topic: Waste Elimination, PDCA, HoM Simulation Round 3
Instructor: Ir. Dr. Nur Amalina Muhammad
(assisted by Dr. Hasnida Ab Samat, and Ms. Anis Masturina)
Class #4 started with the topic of Waste Elimination, covering the 8 types of waste using the acronym DOWNTIME (Defect, Overproduction, Waiting, Non-utilized skill, Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Extra processing). The session included insights into causes, avoidance strategies, and examples for each waste, allowing participants to identify waste in their HoM Simulation using the overall process flow.
The results of HoM Simulation Round 2 were presented, indicating an average maintenance service time of 61.36 seconds, along with other performance metrics. Reflections were shared on the Round 2 situation, followed by participants being grouped by roles. Each group presented their findings and proposed potential solutions to enhance the HoM Simulation.
In the afternoon session, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology was introduced, explaining each phase and providing an example using data from HoM Simulation Rounds 1 and 2. Participants were then divided into groups corresponding to each PDCA phase, tasked with applying PDCA to Round 2 and suggesting 3 additional changes for Round 3. Groups presented their work, and subsequently, the HoM Simulation ran for 8 minutes, implementing the agreed-upon changes from the previous session.

Industry Wave 3
Date: 8/5/2024, Wednesday, 9.00am - 5.00pm
Topic: Visual Management, 5S, HoM simulation Round 2
Instructor: Ms. Anis Masturina
(assisted by Dr. Hasnida Ab Samat & Ir. Dr. Nur Amalina Muhammad)
Class #3 started with introducing the topic of Visual Management, where the four types of visual elements, namely visual display, visual control, visual measurement, and visual standards, were emphasized. Several examples of these visual aspects were provided. Subsequently, the results and reflections of HoM Simulation Round 1 were shared with the participants. They were allotted an hour for group discussions to deliberate on the current state, define problem statements, collect relevant data, and establish SMART goals.
Additionally, the participants engaged in discussions regarding the root causes of the identified problems and potential solutions to enhance maintenance service delivery.
In the afternoon session, a presentation on 5S was delivered, elucidating each "S" (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain), with a focus on safety, 5S events, and practical applications. The Visual Management and 5S key takeaway session employed BINGO games, with 25 takeaways identified. Participants selected one takeaway each until they achieved a row of five takeaways.
The group discussions continued, aimed at selecting the top three solutions to be implemented in HoM Simulation Round 2. Participants utilized a multi-voting method to reach a consensus.
To conclude the training session, the HoM Simulation proceeded for a duration of 12 minutes, incorporating the three changes selected through the group discussions.

~ An engineering program with industrial elements in teaching and learning
Congratulations to 21 students from Third Year Manufacturing Engineering with Management who have been selected to participate in the Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification Wave 11 - 2024.
The program is conducted as EPE432: Lean Six Sigma Manufacturing and Management course designed based on the Bose Lean Enterprise Yellow Belt Certification program as in MoA between USM and Flex LTD (Flex Systems Penang) (formerly Bose Systems Malaysia) since 2013.
In this training, they will learn about:
1. Lean Enterprise Overview
2. Aligning the Organization
3. Lean and Problem-Solving Fundamentals
4. Analysis Tools and Standards
5. Basic Statistics and Lean Management Systems
The program will interact with various group discussions and games to ensure effective experiential learning. Assessments for this program include book summaries, in-class exercises, blog writing, leadership, and participation in outdoor activities. Students will also be evaluated based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) report and presentation. Each student must conduct a 10-week PDCA project in a company under the supervision of a field supervisor and a mentor. This allows students to directly apply all their knowledge to solve problems in the real industry. Also, various outdoor activities will be planned and implemented by the students throughout this program.
The graduates from the Yellow Belt program are highly sought after by employers based on our graduates' employability records.
Thus, we wish you all the best in your Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification.
