👨‍💼 Amirul Asraf, with his graduation in 2018, swiftly assumed the role of a RAMS Engineer for the prestigious KVMRT2 Project at Hyundai Rotem Company KL. His expertise in ensuring reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety within the project is a testament to the practical application of his USM education.

👨‍💼 Amirul Afifi, the younger sibling, joined the ranks of graduates in 2023 and wasted no time in making his mark. Currently serving as a Maintenance Engineer for the same project at Hyundai Rotem Company KL, Amirul Afifi applies his USM-acquired skills to uphold the seamless operation and longevity of critical infrastructure.

👩‍🎓 Goh Wen Jiun graduated with a degree in Manufacturing Engineering with Management from USM in 2012. She has since climbed the corporate ladder and now holds the esteemed position of Operations Manager at Minami Electronics Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Her leadership skills, honed through years of experience and her USM education, have been instrumental in driving operational excellence at her company.

👨‍🎓 Goh Wen Qian, the younger brother, is also a proud graduate of USM, having completed his degree in Manufacturing Engineering with Management in 2016. He has swiftly risen through the ranks and currently serves as the Production & Engineering Section Head at the same esteemed organization, Minami Electronics Malaysia Sdn Bhd. His dedication to innovation and his technical prowess have greatly contributed to the company's success.

Both siblings exemplify the values of excellence, dedication, and leadership instilled by their alma mater. We're excited to highlight the journey of another USM alumni, Khoo Boon Sheng, who graduated in 2022 with a BEng. in Manufacturing Engineering with Management. He has exhibited an interest in long-life learning, which he has demonstrated since his diploma study at UniMAP. While working as R&D engineer at Mini Circuits Technologies, he is also pursuing a part-time MSc research programme at INOR USM to investigate light communication technologies.

Khoo Boon Sheng's journey is one of determination and resilience. Despite initial hesitations about choosing USM over his previous university, he embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly. With the guidance of supportive faculty members, he navigated challenges like credit exemption issues and global incidents. So, starting from the first day he stepped into PPKM USM, he told himself to make good use of the opportunity and not regret it in the future.

Almost every semester break, he tried to explore as much as he could by joining exchange programs, summer outbound programs, and national and international innovation competitions. Therefore, he would like to thank the University and the School of Mechanical Engineering for always providing assistance and support in his exchange programs and several innovation competitions, regardless of whether there are achievements or failures.

Looking back at the past few years, most of his undergraduate studies were marked by several global incidents. It began with his exchange program in Hong Kong during the largest protest incidents and continued through the COVID-19 pandemic until his final year. Although adapting to these extraordinary circumstances was challenging, the school has provided opportunities for him to explore skills beyond his major and participate in various competitions with some achievements such as (InIIC 2020 - Gold, CommTech 2020 - Shortlisted, INoDEx 2021 - Bronze, IMDC 2022 - First runner up, IUPC 2022 - First runner up).

Khoo Boon Sheng achievements' during his studies and career progress so far were exemplary and outstanding. Thus, we would like to wish him all the best in his future endeavors. 💜

Introducing Vemal Kathirvelu, a USM alumni who graduated in 2018 with a degree in Manufacturing Engineering with Management! His journey at the USM School of Mechanical Engineering was a blend of academic rigour and unforgettable life lessons. From learning fundamental engineering and manufacturing knowledge to mastering software and hardware tools for design activities, Vemal's time at USM laid a solid foundation for his career.

Reflecting on his path, Vemal shares valuable advice for current and future USM students: "Manufacturing engineering is a unique programme. Although the name is not as well-known as mechanical, civil, or E&E, its graduates have great work prospects. In my experience, a degree is only a ticket to a job. We may also work in a related industry, such as electronics manufacturing."

Let's shine the spotlight on Zikri Zulkifli, an esteemed alumni of the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) class of 2018, who is working at Boston Scientific, Batu Kawan, Penang! As a talented Manufacturing Engineer III, Zikri seamlessly integrates his USM-acquired skills with his expertise in process improvement methodologies like DMAIC, lean methodology and Agile-Scrum approach. From utilizing SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Automated Visual inspection system as well as numerous statistical tools, Zikri's technical and engineering expertise are truly impressive.

With his degree in Manufacturing Engineering with Management and Lean Six Sigma certification from USM, Zikri not only excels in projects such as simulating production layouts and designing projection lithography machines but also serves as a guiding force for new engineers, interns and manufacturing technicians, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi (KPT) dalam kenyataan semalam memaklumkan permohonan dibuka bagi kemasukan ke 20 Universiti Awam (UA), 36 Politeknik, 105 Kolej Komuniti dan empat Institusi Kemahiran Tinggi Awam (ILKA).

Menurut KPT, permohonan terbuka kepada pelajar lepasan Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) dan Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) atau setaraf untuk semua program pengajian bagi permohonan Fasa Pertama manakala hanya program pengajian yang tidak bertemu duga dan atau ujian, dibuka bagi permohonan Fasa Kedua.

Manufacturing Engineering with Management - UPUcode: US6540001

~ An engineering program with industrial elements in teaching and learning

Congratulations to 21 students from Third Year Manufacturing Engineering with Management who have been selected to participate in the Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification Wave 11 - 2024.

The program is conducted as EPE432: Lean Six Sigma Manufacturing and Management course designed based on the Bose Lean Enterprise Yellow Belt Certification program as in MoA between USM and Flex LTD (Flex Systems Penang) (formerly Bose Systems Malaysia) since 2013.

In this training, they will learn about:
1. Lean Enterprise Overview
2. Aligning the Organization
3. Lean and Problem-Solving Fundamentals
4. Analysis Tools and Standards
5. Basic Statistics and Lean Management Systems

The program will interact with various group discussions and games to ensure effective experiential learning. Assessments for this program include book summaries, in-class exercises, blog writing, leadership, and participation in outdoor activities. Students will also be evaluated based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) report and presentation. Each student must conduct a 10-week PDCA project in a company under the supervision of a field supervisor and a mentor. This allows students to directly apply all their knowledge to solve problems in the real industry. Also, various outdoor activities will be planned and implemented by the students throughout this program.

The graduates from the Yellow Belt program are highly sought after by employers based on our graduates' employability records.

USM Lean Team Leads Successful Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certification Training at Bangkok Hospital, Hat Yai, Thailand

29 -31st January 2024 - In a landmark collaboration, the Lean Team from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recently conducted a highly successful Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certification training at Bangkok Hospital Hat Yai (BHH) in collaboration with the Dean and lecturers from Department of Industrial Engineering, Prince of Songkhla University (PSU). The intensive 3-day program showcased the dedication of all three institutions to advancing healthcare processes through Lean knowledge and methodologies.

Under the expert guidance of the USM Lean Team, 18 participants from BHH, emerged as certified Lean Six Sigma White Belt professionals. The program encompassed conquering 6 modules, demonstrating the participants' commitment and enthusiasm. The collaboration between USM, PSU and BHH emphasized a joint commitment to advancing industrial engineering knowledge within the healthcare sector. The Lean Team from USM consist of Ir Dr Nur Amalina, Dr Hasnida dan Ms Anis Masturina with the support of Dean, Assoc Prof. Dr Jamaluddin Abdullah brought their academic expertise in enhancing the depth and quality of the training.

With the successful completion of the Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certification, these healthcare professionals from BHH are now equipped to address inefficiencies, drive process improvements, mentor colleagues, and emerge as effective team leaders within the hospital setting. They will now continue to apply the knowledges by conducting Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) projects with the guidance from PSU team.

USM extends special commendation to the participants for their outstanding commitment, dedication, and remarkable teamwork throughout the certification journey. The collaborative environment fostered optimal learning conditions, leading to exemplary performance. We looks forward to the positive impact the participants will have on healthcare processes, contributing to enhanced patient care and operational efficiency within Bangkok Hospital through the application of Lean Six Sigma principles.

As news of this successful training resonates within the healthcare community, it serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, education, and continuous improvement. This achievement stands as a significant milestone for USM, PSU and BHH, underscoring the joint commitment to excellence in healthcare practices.
