TONIBUNG - TObpinai NIngkokoton koBUruon kampuNG
Community Based, Indigenous led Social Enterprise Renewable and sustanible energy practioner we started as a small youths group in Kg.
Nampasan, Penampang, a small farming village near Donggongon town. in 1993 we formed this group (previously know as Tonibung Youths) to give opportunity ofr our village youths to learn appropriate technology in farming i.e irrigation, mechinised farming etc. later we start focused in other skills such as welding, electrical and mechanical
We completed another offgrid Solar PV installation for CLC in Paitan. This time the Bi-Facial solar panels fits well with the Aquaponics syste. This 3.3kwp Solar PV not only supply power to the school, but also to the operations of the Aquaponics. with Bi-Facial Solar panels provides shade but able to generate extra power from reflected light under the panels
Our team completed another 3.3Kwp solar PV installation at a remote CLC providing education for children in plantations. our system consists of 6 550w Panels, 5kwh LifePO4 batteries and 5.5kw Hybrid inverter. This system is enough to power the lights, fans, computer, starlink communication at the school.
Previously the school rely on diesel generator that is very noisy, polluting and expensive to operare.
Slowly but surely, the Walou socio economic centre is taking shape. The centre will be powered by Hydro Solar Hybrid system with roof mounted by solar pv. We hope the center will become Kg Walou socio economic hub- cafe, sundry shop, internet cafe and also act as a multi purpose hall. This is all thanks to Matahio Group for their funding.

Some of the highlights of our one week expidition to Ulu Papar to conduct technical assessment of the existing Micro Hydro mini grids that needed some up grades. Under UNDP Malaysia Green Resilience Recovery grants , Tonibung plan to increase output capacity of the mini grids by at least 30%, Conduct women empowerment through Productive Use of Energy program and watershed management protocol
While our Ulu Papar Team is buzy with their hike in the Crocker Range, our second team is doing recce in Kg Pitas Laut, Kinabatangan. We took boat from Sandakan Jetty because it was closer to the mangrove area. Together with us was Team from Forever Sabah and Green Empowerment. The Project was to provide electricity through Renewable Energy ( solar power) in Kg Pitas Laut. Currently the community in Pitas Laut depends on generators power for light, which only for 3-4 hours pernight which cost them about RM800 permonth. The project funded by Eco Energy and Seacology. Each funder have their mission which is to provide electricity through RE and conservation to our natural resources.
Ecotourism and why it matters - Seacology You’ve probably heard the term “ecotourism.” . But what exactly does it mean, and what are its implications for the environment?
Kicking off Tonibungs Ulu Papar Trip for UNDP Green and Resilience Recovery ( GRR) project. The trip begins with a hike to Kg Longkogungan, Kalangaan, Pongobonon, Buayan, Tiku, Terian and lastly to Kg Timpayasah. Unfortunately the Tambunan road was closed due to lanslide, so we just send our team to the nearest safe road and they will hike from there. The purpose of trip was for the evaluation of all the micro hydro system in Ulu Papar.
Received shipment of 110pcs 550w Bi-facial solar panels. This will be for 4 different community mini grids and Solar water pumping system in Walou Ranau, mangkapon Pitas, Terian Penampang and pilot project on Agro solar at Nampasan community garden project.

Once the major cleaning is complete, now we move in to the painstaking deep cleaning of our machines, vehicles, office equipment and solar equipment that was flooded hoping that it will still sprang into life. Other wise it will go in to the bin and listed as losses from the flood.
Thanks to all volunteers that came to help with the clean ups. The major cleaning has been completed. Now we started to was the equipment and tools that was flooded hoping that some might still be able to be repaired.
Fourth day of cleaning up. Thanks to volunteers all the way from Tenom to assist with the clean up. There is still areas that we have not touched yet. Work continues tomorrow
Heart breaking to see 😭 Our powerTools, office equipment, LCD projectors, PC, Laptops, generators, lathe machines are flooded. Some serviceable but many are total loss. Our new CNC machine was submerged, Even our hardworking forklift was not spared as it was submerged under chest level flood waters. We estimate the rebuilding cost will in the range of RM100-150K
Third day of clean ups. We managed to clear mud and debris on the main workshop and training centre but barely scratch the rest of the places. Thanks to all those who came to assist and those donated food and drinks for the volunteers.
We welcome volunteers to help with the cleanup as we are going to continue to clean the centre the rest of the week before we can resume operations next week
Total damages and loss have not been ascertained but its clear that all our machines including our CNC was submerged in flood waters. It can ammount to RM 100-150k. We have not even had time to look at our new workshop in Kiranau. 😥
Long winding road to recovery..starts with clean ups, then the damage assessment.. repairs, machine servicing and buy new tools. That will be at least two weeks before can get back operations
The aftermath... This is where the challenge starts with the clean up and the heartbreaking assesment of the damages of equipment, inventories and tools that was submerged.
Our hardworking forklift that had to do the heavy lifting eventually had to be sacrificed to save the Lithium Batteries from been flooded. Servicing the forklift alone will cost few Thousand Ringgit. Other damages like motors and welding sets will be high. We just hope the flood water did not reached the CNC plasma cutter 😥
A Very sad day for us as we were hit with another flood.. this time it rose so fast and higher from even the highest level we ever experienced in 1999. Mny tools and equipment including documents was affected as most of our team members are on leave or outstation.
We just hope the flood resides fas and we can salvage our equipment. It will be weeks of work to clean and get things back on track.
Conclude a 3 days Global Symposium on Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions in Tetros de Canal, Madrid Spain. Tonibung have the opportunity to share on our Best Practice in implementing Community Based Micro Hydro Project.
A simple but safe house wiring for the elderly house in Kg Puneng Trusan. Some of the community members in Kg Puneng Trusan are elderly and their children can only come once a year to visit them since they work so far away. Tonibung take the opportunity to help them installing new house wiring for them since the new micro hydro system is in operation. The rest of the villagers house will be done together by the community members. Chris from Seacology take the opportunity to visit and meet the community members. Thank you to the intern from Kolej Vokasinal Beaufort, Leonel and Joshua for helping with the wiring.
Celebrate the completion of one month intensive training at CREATE Borneo by two young interns from Arunachal Pradesh North East India. Ebo and Nukki completed Module 1 of Community based Renewable Energy Development traning a module compiled by Right Energy Partnership with Indigenous Peoples - REP to facilitate capacity building program for Indigenous Peoples Organisations to develop more community led Renewable Energy Mini Grids.
