Willowglen’s White one, Semillion Sauvignon Blanc (Riverina, NSW, Australia)
On the Nose: Subdued tropics with a hint of the grassy land of Riverina).
On the Tongue: Fresh, lively with just a nice amount of acidity. Pleasant.

DeBortoli, Willowglen, Shiraz Cabernet (Riverina, NSW, Australia)
On the Nose: Very fruit driven with both red and the darker fruits and a touch of plum.
On the Tongue: Generous and plush, like the Australians do well. Tannins are fine and make this one friendly to drink.

Another beer, Gweilo, Session IPA
On the Nose: Tropical and vibrant. A bit wild, like Hong Kong (the home of this can) can be, but still organized chaos.
On the Tongue: Restrained and fresh, easygoing with the nice bitterness at the end, like an IPA does well.

A beer. Rye River Brewing Co. - Big Bangin IPA
On the Nose: Tropical with complex hop notes. And an indication what’s to come on the palate.
On the Tongue: Smooth and with a certain richness. It’s big in the bang but in a very comforting kind of way.
SKIN.
A conventional wine, done the unconventional way. Semillion with texture and just this nice touch of chili padi.
The last Gweilo being served at Gatvic by 13Thirtyseven, at one of the best corners in Georgetown.

We’re doing a Wine tasting with some great platters of cheese and bites, by our friends of Hudson’s Deli.
Featuring the great bottles of our favourite South Australian winemaker, Alpha Box & Dice. They turn both common and not so common grapes into something delicious.

A new arrival, from the cooler part of South Australia.
Pinot Noir, with some roots from Burgundy. Inspired by the soil, the grape and the character of the great lands of pinot noir heaven.

……because it’s another super hot day here in Penang, Kaiju! Krush, Tropical Ale (Huntingdale, Victoria, Australia)
On the Nose: Tropical Island, with loads of mango, citrus, pineapple and a touch of papaya.
On the Tongue: Hold my beer, we’re getting more. Super refreshing and enjoyable, with a clean and crisp malt profile.
Today’s Tasting Notes in Our Own Words:
Chatea de Fesles, Rose d’Anjou (Loire Valley, France)
On the Nose: Loire Vally, with a bit of imagination. Plenty of raspberry, touch of stone fruit and this subtle hint of the soil it came from.
On the Tongue: Refreshing, juicy but with also enough going in to make it one to savour.

An interesting one, Alpha Box & Dice, Fog (Nebbiolo) - Adelaide Hills, Australia
On the Nose: For where it comes from, unexpectedly earthy but with wild strawberry, rose petal and a spiced cigar box.
On the Tongue: Clay like tannins, something bright and very much alive. But you also know that by giving this one the luxury of time, even better things will come. And it coming from Alpha Box & Dice, we’ll summarize this wine as Cherry Cola but a complicated one, in a very good way.

Another Sake, this time Junmai Ginjo Sakon
On the Nose: Pleasant, light, mellow and you know you can anticipate something good.
On the Tongue: This is where it all happens. Very nice body with a rich umami taste. A clean one and very pleasantly going.

On the Nose: Very nice apple, no need for further explanation.
On the Tongue: Interesting! Yes, apple cider but with notes of brioche and, is that beer?

SHUHO JUNMAI-DAIGIN CHO-KARAKUCHI.
On the Nose: Beautiful fine notes of lemon zest. A surprising freshness.
On the Tongue: Kind of like a pleasant dry white wine but with the unmistaken notes of sweetness from the polished rice, this refined sake is made from.

Tautila, Tinto (tempranillo) - Non Alcoholic Wine
(La Mancha, Spain)
On the Nose: NO ALCOHOL, which makes the fruits stand out well, with a touch of oakiness
On the Tongue: Reasonably rich with structure from the tannins. A great taste without the buzzy after effects, any time of the day.

Giesen Organic, Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough Ridge, New Zealand)
On the Nose: Passionfruit with zinging guava, lime and elderflower. Yes, nicely complex.
On the Tongue: Generous and crisp. Sustainable on the tongue and environment.

Misha’s Vineyard, The Starlet Sauvignon Blanc (Central Otago, New Zealand)
On the Nose: Bursting with tropical fruits, lime and lemongrass
On the Tongue: Concentrated and dangerous. You want more, all the time.
A new range of Belgian beers has reached our shores. Covering both the traditional ones from the abbey but also IPA and the like.
A nice Wine Dinner we’ll be doing at Suffolk House, coming 6 March. Featuring the beautiful bottles from New Zealand’s Central Otago region.
