MANGROVE CONSERVATION: GLOBAL EFFORT IN GREENING MERBOK

MERBOK, KEDAH, 26 January 2024 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) through the School of Educational Studies (PPIP) recently spearheaded a mangrove planting session in Merbok, Kedah.

The event saw the planting of 300 mangrove seedlings, symbolising a collective commitment to environmental sustainability and global collaboration.

This project involving two Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE), one in Penang under the USM Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), and RCE Tongyeong from South Korea, together with Kelab Puncak, aimed not only to create an impact in environmental conservation but also to foster international cooperation and youth empowerment.

Held under the umbrella of the "Bridge to the World" (BTW) programme by RCE Tongyeong, now in its 15th edition, students from Tongyeong High School in South Korea participated in this hands-on initiative.

A diverse group of participants gathered for these noteworthy endeavours. The ‘Blue Earth' team represents RCE Tongyeong under the BTW programme. The participants included Woo-jin Lee, the Assistant Programmer Designer, Team of Education Sector of RCE Tongyeong, along with a group of students: Cha Junwoo (Tongyeong High School), Kang Sandeul (Dongwon High School), Kim Nayoung (Chungryol Girls' High School), and Kim Guk-Rok (Tongyeong High School), all of whom brought an international flair to the initiative.

The site of the planting session is Sungai Merbok Mangrove Forest. It comprises of 18 compartments with a total area of 4176 hectares, supervised by the Kedah Forestry Department. Recognized for its rich biodiversity, the forest is home to 80 bird species, primates, reptiles, mammals, and various aquatic species, including critically-endangered mangrove species.

Representing Universiti Sains Malaysia were Associate Professor Dr. Rabiatul-Adawiah Binti Ahmad Rashid, Associate Professor Dr. Aswati Binti Hamzah, Associate Professor Dr. Shahabuddin Bin Hashim, Wan Mazlina Binti Wan Mehammud, all from PPIP; and Wan Sharipahmira Mohd Zain and Associate Professor Dr. Japareng Lalung from the USM School of Industrial Technology, who is also the Coordinator of RCE Penang. From Kelab Puncak, Mr. Mohamad Ridwan bin Ishak (Pak Su) led a group of 10 other students.

This endeavour, funded by the Japan-Malaysian Association (JMA), underscores the importance of community engagement and education in fostering environmental stewardship.

The mangrove planting session not only left a lasting impact on the ecosystem of Sungai Merbok but also fostered cross-cultural connections among the participants and a shared commitment to environmental stewardship. As these young minds intertwine their roots with the mangroves, they symbolise the growth of a global community dedicated to preserving the natural wonders that connect us all.

Special thanks to the Kedah State Fire and Rescue Department for their invaluable assistance in ensuring the safety of all participants during the mangrove planting initiative in Merbok, Kedah. Their presence has made this collaborative environmental effort a secure and enriching experience for everyone involved.

RCE PENANG@USM SHINES BRIGHT WITH DUAL WIN AT INTERNATIONAL RCE AWARDS 2023

https://news.usm.my/index.php/english-news/9680-rce-penang-usm-shines-bright-with-dual-win-at-international-rce-awards-2023

Kuala Lumpur, 2 November, 2023 – RCE Penang continues to be a shining example of excellence in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by proudly securing not one, but two prestigious international Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) awards for the year 2023. This remarkable accomplishment was officially announced during the 13th Global RCE Conference, a hybrid event held from October 31 to November 2, 2023 hosted by RCE Greater Gombak and RCE Greater Kuala Lumpur.

The first accolade, the prestigious "Acknowledged Flagship Project" award, was bestowed upon RCE Penang for their groundbreaking initiative, 'Empowering Students' Knowledge of Palm Oil Sustainability via Intergenerational Online Program and TikTok Video Competition.'

This visionary project is aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8, focusing on Decent Work and Economic Growth within the thematic category of Agriculture. It was coordinated by Associate Professor Dr. Japareng Lalung, from the School of Industrial Technology. Dr. Lalung, who also serves as the coordinator of RCE Penang at the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), played a pivotal role in this endeavour.

This remarkable collaborative effort involved a consortium of esteemed organizations, including the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Malaysian Academic Research on Palm Oil Sustainability (ARPOS), Sime Darby Plantation, the Ministry of Education Malaysia, RCE Penang, the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies at USM, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, and Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

The second accolade, an "Honourable Mention" award, was bestowed upon RCE Penang for their project titled 'Empowering Preschool Teachers' Knowledge Attitude and Practices of Systems Thinking’.

This initiative aligns with SDG 4, focusing on Quality Education, and falls under the thematic category of Curriculum Development. The project was headed by Associate Professor Dr. Aswati Hamzah from the School of Educational Studies (PPIP), who also holds the esteemed position of associate Fellow of RCE Penang.

The project is a collaboration involving the CGSS, the Penang State Education Department, SK Kepala Batas, SK Tanjung Bungah, SJKT Palaniandy, and SJKC Perkampungan Berapit.

Both awards were presented by Dr. Jonghwi Park, the Programme Head of the Innovation and Education Programme at The United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS).

Both transformative projects have made a profound impact on sustainable development, receiving recognition for their remarkable ability to bridge local and global perspectives on sustainable development.

They are celebrated for their engagement in transformative learning and research, as well as their notable contributions to community engagement. Furthermore, these initiatives have played a pivotal role in developing the capacities of stakeholders and partners.

The video of RCE Penang's award-winning projects can be accessed at (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMNpIpA4k5s). The RCE Awards, inaugurated in 2012, stands as a testament to honouring exceptional projects and programmes within the Global RCE Network that adeptly tackle local sustainable development challenges. It pays tribute to RCEs that have shown unwavering dedication to fostering both local and global perspectives on sustainable development through transformative learning, research, and active community engagement, all while enhancing stakeholder and partner capacity development. The resounding success of RCE Penang underscores USM's unwavering commitment to sustainable development and its dedication to inspiring positive change on a global scale.

USM COLLABORATING WITH VARIOUS PARTNERS TO PROVIDE EDUCATION ON MANGROVE ECOSYSTEMS

KUALA MUDA, 20 October 2023 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), together with partners from various organisations successfully organised a mangrove planting project recently in Kedah.

Held in Kuala Muda, Kedah, the initiative which was funded by Japan Malaysia Association (JMA) through the USM School of Educational Studies (PPIP), also received support from the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE Penang@USM), Kedah Forest Department, and Kelab Pendidikan dan Kebajikan Puncak.

30 students, teachers, and USM staff were guided by Kelab Pendidikan dan Kebajikan Puncak and the Kedah Forest Department, to plant mangrove saplings in the designated areas. Participants from SM Al-Itqan, SM Teknik Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, SM Sains Tun Syed Sheh Shahabudin, SMK Permatang Tok Jaya, and SMK Convent Butterworth were instrumental in guaranteeing the success of the mangrove plantation.

USM took steps to preserve the mangroves along the coastal areas of Kuala Muda as means to combat coastal degradation but also fostered an understanding of the vital role mangroves play in the ecosystem among the participating students and teachers.

As a part of the project, USM also organised a briefing session to educate the students and attendees about the crucial role of mangrove forests in maintaining ecological balance. Mangroves act as a buffer against coastal erosion, provide habitat for various marine species, and sequester large amounts of carbon dioxide. Their preservation is essential for the well-being of both local communities and the broader environment.

"This project aligns perfectly with our commitment to environmental sustainability and educational development," said Associate Prof. Dr. Rabiatul-Adawiyah Ahmad Rashid, the Head of the project from PPIP.

The recent mangrove planting initiative in Kuala Muda represents the fourth instalment in a highly successful series of projects. Building upon the achievements of the preceding Series 1, 2, and 3 initiatives, this ongoing effort continues to make a lasting impact on the local ecosystem and the broader environment.

This project at the same time aligns with the SDG Goal 15 - Life On Land and SDG 14 - Life Below Water. By planting mangroves, USM is contributing to the conservation and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, which directly links to the preservation of biodiversity and the promotion of sustainable land management practices, while helping to protect marine life and promote the sustainable use of oceans and seas. This project is a testament to the importance of protecting the world's marine and coastal environments.

As the saplings take root and grow, they will not only help protect the local coastline from erosion but also contribute to a cleaner atmosphere by capturing carbon dioxide. This USM-led endeavour exemplifies the power of education, collaboration, and environmental stewardship, serving as a beacon of hope for a more sustainable future.

The involvement of RCE Penang, a recognised leader in sustainable education and community engagement, further emphasizes the importance of this initiative, by connecting the university with various stakeholders and facilitating the smooth ex*****on of the mangrove planting project. "It's a win-win situation; not only we are contributing to the preservation of our natural surroundings, but we're also instilling in our students a deep sense of responsibility toward the environment," said Associate Professor Dr. Japareng Lalung, the coordinator of RCE Penang, Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), USM.

“By having this initiative, we come one step closer to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, collectively working towards a more harmonious and balanced coexistence between humanity and the natural world”, said Wan Sharipahmira Mohd Zain, a personnel from the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies, USM.

The collaboration between USM, RCE Penang, the Kedah Forest Department, Kelab Pendidikan dan Kebajikan Puncak, and the Japan Malaysia Association showcases the potential for international cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges. The project at Kuala Muda serves as a model of how organisations and institutions at various levels can come together to work towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
