How to be good in Maths?

An interesting Chinese Proverb

Story time 😹

This student, he also came 2 months before the major exam. But this boy was already doing well in all the other subjects except Add Maths. He could barely pass in it. His mom then got in touch with me, as I was also his sister’s tutor years ago. He was very attentive in class and will also send me questions after tuition hours for me to help.

His hardwork paid off and he got straight A+. Luckily the subject that I taught didn’t make his result in any way 😅

This student came just one and a half month before her major exam. Despite going for other tuition classes, she was failing her Maths. Her mom was very worried and contacted me after her friend told her about me.

Her mom said that her daughter has given up hope in Maths and has mental block when it comes to this subject. But luckily, during class, she played her part and was hardworking.

I am happy that she managed to get a B from fail in a short span of time.

HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR AMBITION

Just want to share, one of my student who started tuition from Feb 2024 with me sent me this message.

When he started tuition, I realised that his foundation was quite weak. Even his marks were below 40 at that time. I was hopingbthat he could at least pass first.

So when I received this message from him, it was a pleasant surprise. Glad he managed to improve and gain his confidence in Maths and Add Maths.

(In case you are wondering why he is calling me aunty instead of Teacher, well, it’s because he is also a family friend and I know him before he became my student 😄)

Out of all my students, I am especially proud of this boy. I know him from 12 as I was teaching his sister at that time. I can see that he didn’t like studying much as he would always runaway when his mom asked him to do his HW. Even when I started tutoring him in Year 10 for Maths, Chem & Physics, he was failing most of his subjects as he was very happy go lucky and hardly studied. Secretly, I was worried and thought that even if he gets credit for IGCSE, I would be happy.

Luckily, after his trials, his attitude changed and he started going all out, printing past year papers and dilligently attempting them. And my heart swelled with pride when he got 70+ for the subjects that he was failing months earlier 😃 Happy for him 😊

The satisfaction that a teacher gets when students do well is priceless ☺️

Tips for doing past year papers for IGCSE students:-

1. Start early.

The best time to start is when you have completed Year 10. This is because you have completed half the syllabus and you are able to do 50%of the paper. You can circle the questions that is not covered in school and can always do it later.

2. Plan

This is very important. Count how many days you have for IGCSE. Count how many papers you need to complete (from 2014 to 2022). Divide it by the number of days. For example, one paper per day of any one subject.

3. Consistent

Many students overlook the importance of being consistent and concentrate on either doing a lot per day or do nothing. Even if you do 5 questions per day, it is 150 questions a month. Create a routine.
