The Glenrothes has been producing Speyside Single Malts since 1879. The Glenrothes’s distillery is in Rothes in the heart of Speyside which is acknowledged by connoisseurs as the source of Scotland’s finest single malts; indeed, it has the highest density of distilleries of any region. This is due to the unusually clement climate experienced in this area and the ample supply of soft water provided by the river Spey.

The Macallan Double Cask 18 Years Old, a perfectly balanced single malt whisky matured for 18 years in both American and European sherry seasoned oak casks. Rich golden bronze in colour. Blackcurrant, brown sugar, orange, plum and raisin on the nose. Fruit and syrup on the palate. Followed by hazelnut with hints of cinnamon and lemon. Japanese single grain whisky from the Chita distillery, one of the selection of fantastic distilleries owned by Suntory. This is their main expression - a whisky matured in a combination of Sherry, bourbon and (interestingly) wine casks. Good whisky for the summer months.

Tasting Note
Nose: Honeydew melon, citrus and honey'd cereal.

Palate: Vanilla sponge cake and more honey. A touch of orchard blossom.

Finish: Medium length, rather zesty.

Kakubin is a very adaptable whiskey with a sweet scent, rich flavour, and dry finish, and the Kakubin highball is the drink of choice for many Japanese when they go out for a night of food and drink.

Nose:
Please allow adequate time for the Kakubin to open up in the glass due to the presence of alcohol. The Kakubin has a unique aroma that quickly identifies it as a Japanese whiskey.

Floral and fruity tones, young grain alcohol, brown sugar, caramel, plums, sweet candies, young bourbon, nuts, cinnamon, vanilla, light honey, light coconut water, and a hint of citrus are among the notes are detected. It’s nothing exceptional, but it’s a step up than your regular low-cost Scottish Blend.

Taste:
Grain Alcohol, Oak, Cereals, light Vanilla, light Honey, Grapefruit, light Pepper, and light Ginger all contribute to a watery, sugary sweet, edgy, and somewhat bitter taste.

Finish:
Light Honey, Grapefruit, Nuts, Nut Shells, Grains, mild Vanilla, Oak, light Pepper, and Ginger on a short, sugary sweet and watery finish.

Auchentoshan American Oak was introduced in 2014 to replace the Classic. Matured exclusively in first-fill bourbon casks, this is a vanilla-rich and fruity whisky.

NOSE
Toffee popcorn wafts out of the glass, with some sweet spice from the oak and hint of candied orange peel. Some fresh lemon zestiness brightens things up, along with that classic Auchentoshan grassiness.
PALATE
Soft and silky mouthfeel, with pronounced coconut and toffee notes. The sweet spice continues on to the palate, but no hard edges here. Very easy drinking.
FINISH
Sweet spice and toffee, with a lingering citrus-tinged freshness.

Charring is an age-old method for invigorating barrels to intensify the taste. Jameson Black Barrel is a tribute to the distillery’s coopers, who painstakingly give their bourbon barrels an additional charring to reveal their untold richness and complexity. Because every barrel contains secrets; the trick is coaxing them out.

Time spent maturing in these barrels leads to intensified aromas of butterscotch, fudge and creamy toffee. Nutty notes are in abundance alongside the smooth sweetness of spice and vanilla.

Matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks before a finishing period in casks that previously held heavily peated (Speyside peat, as we understand it) Scotch whisky. This third no age statement Nàdurra release addresses the fact that if you're setting out to create a whisky that George Smith would recognise, you do have to appreciate that peat was used at the distillery in his day. Nose: Tangy and 'fizzy', old fashioned lemonade and hints of Orangina or Buck's Fizz even. There's gooseberry and a touch of coconut and foam banana. Raspberry and rhubarb develop. The peat comes through as nutty malted barley.

Palate: Tasting this alongside Ian Logan, he explained how his favourite tasting notes are the ones that get right to the point, so here you go: Peat & Pear Drops!

Finish: Creaminess and earthy peat combine for a chocolatey finish, both pleasantly bitter cocoa and creamy Cadbury's hot chocolate with hints of fruitiness still.

Overall: Fruity Glenlivet combining very well with considered use of peated casks
