What Thermographers Really Look for During Oil Transformer Inspections?

The image above is from our recent inspection at a client's site, showcasing the use of thermographic technology to assess transformer health. Thermographic inspections are essential for maintaining the health and efficiency of oil-filled transformers. These inspections help identify hot spots, which can signal loose or corroded connections and overloaded components, potentially leading to failures if left unchecked. Additionally, thermographers look for temperature differences that can indicate phase imbalances and abnormal heating patterns. Factors such as wind speed, ambient temperature, and solar radiation can significantly affect the accuracy of thermographic readings, especially for outdoor transformers. Thermographers plan inspections during optimal times to mitigate these environmental effects.

But what exactly are thermographers looking for during these inspections? Let's delve into the details. ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ‘€ Key Focus Areas During Oil Transformer Thermographic Inspections:

1. Insulation Integrity:
- Thermal Patterns: Consistent thermal patterns across the transformerโ€™s surface indicate healthy insulation. Inconsistent patterns can be a sign of deteriorating insulation, which can compromise the transformer's efficiency and safety.

2. Cooling System Efficiency:
- Radiators and Fans: Thermographers inspect the cooling system, including radiators and fans, to ensure they are operating effectively. Inefficient cooling can lead to overheating and reduce the transformer's lifespan. Regular checks should be done to ensure there are no obstructions and that the fans and radiators are free from debris and functioning properly.
- Oil Levels: Thermography can help in assessing the oil level, which is vital for cooling and insulating the transformer. Low oil or blocked cooling fins can compromise the cooling system, potentially leading to overheating and transformer failure.

3. Component-Specific Inspections:
- Bushings: Inspecting the temperature of bushings helps in identifying potential failures due to overloading or poor connections. High heat may indicate a problem that requires immediate attention to prevent further damage.
- Load Tap Changers (LTCs): These components are critical for regulating the transformer's voltage. Thermographic inspections ensure LTCs are functioning correctly and not overheating, which can extend the life of the transformer by preventing oil degradation and sludge buildup.
- Bus Duct Terminals: Inspecting the bus duct terminals is crucial as they are often points where electrical connections can degrade, leading to increased resistance and heating. This is important for maintaining the overall reliability of the transformer.

Complementary technologies, such as Transient Earth Voltage (TEV) and ultrasound, can greatly enhance thermographic inspections. TEV monitoring helps detect electrical discharges in the insulation of high-voltage equipment, providing early warnings of potential failures. Ultrasound can identify issues like corona discharge and surface tracking, which are often precursors to insulation breakdowns. By combining these technologies with thermography, a more comprehensive assessment of transformer health can be achieved, improving reliability and reducing the risk of unexpected failures.

Thermographic inspections are a powerful tool for ensuring the reliable operation of oil transformers. By understanding what thermographers look for and integrating complementary technologies like TEV and ultrasound, we can appreciate the meticulous care that goes into maintaining these critical components of our electrical infrastructure.

Comparing Partial Discharge Testing Methods: TEV vs. Ultrasound 09/07/2024

Dive Deep into Detecting Partial Discharge (PD) in High-Voltage Assets

Partial Discharge (PD) can silently degrade your equipment, leading to unexpected failures, costly downtime, and safety hazards. Early detection is crucial for maintaining system reliability and safety, especially in humid or dusty environments where PD is more prone to occur.

What is Partial Discharge (PD)?
PD is a small electrical spark within the insulation of high-voltage equipment, often due to imperfections, aging, or environmental factors like humidity and dust. These sparks can cause significant damage over time if not detected early. Early detection of PD helps prevent insulation breakdown, equipment failure, unplanned outages, and enhances safety by maintaining the integrity and reliability of high-voltage assets such as transformers, switchgears, and cables.

Online Methods for Detecting PD:

- TEV (Transient Earth Voltage): TEV sensors capture transient voltage signals emitted by PD. This method is effective for enclosed apparatus like metal-clad switchgear and allows for continuous monitoring without disrupting operations.
- Ultrasound: Ultrasound detection monitors acoustic emissions from PD activity. It captures ultrasonic waves for analysis, making it effective in noisy environments and for non-intrusive inspections.

During a recent thermographic inspection at one of our client's sites, we identified what initially appeared to be a significant hotspot with a maximum temperature reading of 105.2ยฐC in the Main Switchboard (MSB) panel. As seen in the thermal image below, the anomaly was initially concerning.

Upon further investigation, we discovered that this was not a true hotspot but a reflection from a heater installed in the panel.

Key Takeaways:
- Always take precautions to differentiate between actual thermal anomalies and reflections, especially when inspecting metal surfaces with shiny finishes. It's crucial to verify the source of high-temperature readings to avoid unnecessary maintenance actions and ensure accurate diagnostics.

This experience at our client's site reaffirms the importance of continuous learning and vigilance in thermographic inspections. Accurate interpretation of thermal images is key to maintaining electrical system integrity and safety. Ensure that thermographic inspections are conducted by certified personnel for the most reliable results.

Understanding the Basics: Thermographic Inspection in Electrical Maintenance 13/06/2024

Ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical systems is crucial for your continuous operations. Thermographic inspection, also known as thermal imaging, leverages infrared technology to detect heat patterns in electrical equipment. Hereโ€™s a comprehensive look at how this technology works.

What is Thermographic Inspection?
- Thermographic inspection is a non-invasive method that uses infrared radiation to detect heat patterns emitted by electrical components. All objects emit infrared radiation based on their temperature. Thermal cameras capture this radiation, converting it into thermograms or visual representations of temperature differences. By analyzing these images, you can spot abnormal heat patterns indicating potential issues like loose connections or overloaded circuits.

How It Works?
1. Infrared Radiation: Objects emit infrared radiation based on their temperature, invisible to the human eye.
2. Capturing Heat Patterns: Thermal cameras detect this radiation, producing thermograms that showcase temperature variations.
3. Interpreting Thermograms: These images reveal hot spots and abnormal heat distributions, highlighting potential problems such as loose connections, overloaded circuits, or insulation failures.

However, accurate and reliable thermographic inspections require specialized knowledge and skills. Hiring a trained and certified professional offers significant advantages: they ensure proper use of equipment, accurate interpretation of thermograms, early identification of issues, and maintenance of safety standards.

You may conducting them in-house or you can opt to hire a professional service provider for these reasons:
1. Expertise and Experience: Service providers have specialized training and extensive experience, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
2. Advanced Equipment: They often use the latest thermal imaging technology, providing advanced diagnostic capabilities in order to keep up with the industries.
3. Comprehensive Reporting: Professionals offer detailed reports with actionable insights, helping you address issues promptly.
4. Cost-Effectiveness: Outsourcing inspections can be more cost-effective than conducting them in-house, especially if your organization lacks the necessary resources or expertise.

Thermographic inspection enables proactive approach offering several advantages, including early detection of potential issues, reduced downtime, and extended equipment lifespan. When implementing correctly, you can enhance safety, improve overall system reliability, and achieve cost savings by preventing costly repairs and interruptions. Make the smart choice for your industrial assets and secure the seamless, reliable performance of your electrical systems.
