⚠️Foreign Body Ingestion in Pets😱

Pets have the unfortunate tendency to eat things they shouldn't, and we aren't talking about food. They like to play with things and play often involves chewing. Chewing leads to accidental swallowing and from there potential disaster can ensue. Toys, socks, rocks and other materials find their way into pet stomachs but when the foreign body is a string or worse a sewing needle, the consequences are especially dire.

🧐What are the risks of needle ingestion?
Sewing needles can potentially get lodged, pe*****te, or migrate through tissues within the body. Most commonly, the oral cavity, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract are at risk. The movement of a sharp object like a needle could lead to lacerations and tissue damage. If the stomach or gastrointestinal tract is perforated due to the migration of a needle, peritonitis may ensue. In addition to being painful, the foreign body could cause secondary infections including abscesses. Needles attached to thread also increase the risk of linear foreign bodies.

🤔What do vets do if your pet swallows a needle?
Veterinarian will perform an examination of your pet and evaluate the oral cavity if the needle lodged within it. Radiography is done to determine the location of the needle if not visible within the mouth. Sewing needle is detected as radiopaque under radiograph. The induction of vomiting is not recommended, as the needle could pierce the esophagus on its way from the stomach to the oral cavity. Once the needle is located, surgical extraction of the needle is performed by veterinarian with post operation supportive care to ensure speedy recovery.

⚠️Lip Avulsion in cat😱

🧐What is Lip Avulsion?
Lip avulsion is a degloving injury to the upper or lower lip, due to motor vehicle trauma, animal bites or accidental stepping on the face by a person. Lower lip avulsion is most commonly seen in young cats, due to their inquisitive and clumsy nature. The most common risk factor for development of lip avulsion injury in cats appeared to be an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Outdoor cats make them more liable to interact with other animals, especially territorial stray cats or dogs.

🤔What is the clinical sign of lip avulsion?
Lip avulsion can cause pain and discomfort for the kitten itself and cause less or no appetite at all. Kitten may refrain from being touched at the lip. Also, mucus discharge may be seen accumulating in the lip avulsion due to bacterial infection.

🏥How is it being treated?
Prognosis with surgical repair is excellent. Dead necrotic tissues which are dark or grey colour are debrided first, followed by copious lavage using sterile isotonic saline, a balanced electrolyte solution or dilute chlorhexidine. Early decontamination and administration of antibiotics have been recommended too. Once the wound is granulating well without discharge, it is repaired with stiches or skip flap technique. It is not recommended to leave the lip avulsion to heal by itself without surgery as the muscle and tendon tissue around the lip is high contracture, and it will take a long period of time to close by itself subsequently causing a long-term of mandible bone exposure.

💉Microchipping in Pets🐶🐱

🧐What is microchip and why microchipping is important?
A microchip is a small transmitter about the size of a grain of rice. When a scanner passes over it, a signal is emitted indicating the unique identification number of the chip. This tiny but sturdy little implant can reunite you with a lost pet, serve as proof of ownership in a dispute, import and export globally or even apply pets’ insurance.

🤔Can a Microchip be Used to Locate a Lost Pet?
A microchip is used as an identification device, but not a location device. At the present time, GPS collars are available, but their use is limited by the fact that a collar can be removed or can come off. If you ever lose your pet, this increases the chances of you finding him/her back!

😨Is microchip implantation painful?
The microchipping process is a simple procedure to inject a small microchip into your pet. The injection can cause discomfort, but it is short lived. After having the microchip, your pet will not experience any pain or discomfort once they leave the vet.

📝Why do I have to get a microchip for my pet dog to qualify for insurance?
A microchip is a safe, reliable, and permanent identification for your pet. With a unique ID number, it's required information during claims submission to verify that the same dog insured is the same one claiming for insurance. All dogs must be microchipped within 7 days of purchasing your pet insurance. However, it is not a requirement for pet cats. Instead, cat owners will have to submit their cat's vaccine card for proof of ownership.

⚠️Ingrown Nail in Pets😱

🧐What is an ingrown nail?
Ingrown nails are a common condition in dogs and cats. If nails don’t get trimmed or worn down naturally through exercise, they can grow too long. When this happens, they can grow into paw pads and lead to an ingrown nail.

🤔What causes an ingrown nail?
An ingrown nail is caused by an overgrown nail. If their nails get too long, they can start to curl around and dig into their sensitive paw pads. This can result in inflammation, sores, bleeding, and infection. This is especially common on dew claws, the nails higher up on your dog or cat’s paw that don’t touch the ground to wear down naturally.

📝What are the symptoms of an ingrown nail?
Most commonly, pets will show curved nails, chewing or licking their foot, sensitive paw with inflammation or bleeding of the pad, toe, or foot. Pets will also have limping or lameness and reduced activity.

🏥How do ingrown nails are treated and prevented?
The surrounding fur around the paws is clipped. Then, the ingrown nail is examined, clipped, and removed from the paw pad. The wound will then be cleaned and treated for any infection that may be present. Antibiotics may be prescribed against bacterial infection. Regular exercise helps to naturally grind down their nails. Regular nail trims every 4-6 weeks and checking their paws regularly for signs of overgrowth, sensitivity, inflammation, or bleeding.

⚠️Heartworm infection in pets🪱

Heartworm infection is a mosquito borne disease which usually affects dogs more than other species. Heartworm disease occurs especially in tropical regions and summertime in temperate regions.

🧐How does heartworm meet pets?
It started when mosquito feeds on a heartworm-infected pet, picks up the larva called microfilaria and transmits it to another pet. Once transferred to second host, larval heartworms develop in the tissues, then migrate and mature into adult while in the pulmonary arteries.

🤔What are the symptoms of heartworm disease in pets?
Physical examination in many pets may be normal. However, once the heartworm load has gotten worse, weight loss, exercise intolerance, coughing, tachypnea, dyspnea, and lethargic may manifest. Fever and heart failure may occur in acute onset of heartworm infection.

📝How is heartworm disease being diagnosed?
In general, diagnosis is usually not complicated. Veterinarians may do a thorough history taking and physical examination. Once certain symptoms are suspected, heartworm antigen test is performed, in which the blood sample is tested for proteins that can only be found on the skin of the adult female heartworm. Larval heartworm can be determined by examining a drop of fresh blood under a cover slip.

🏥How is heartworm disease being treated and prevented?
Treatment of heartworm is compulsory after both heartworm antigen test and larval heartworm test came back positive. Melarsomine dihydrochloride is the only adulticide, given in 3 injections, in conjunction with other necessary medication. Exercise restriction by cage rest or boarding in hospital is necessary too. To prevent this, medication such as macrocyclic lactone or milbemycin oxime are prescribed on a monthly basis.

⚠️Periodontal Disease in Pets🦷

Most adult dogs and cats have periodontal disease. Without proper teeth brushing or polishing, plaque will start to form within two days. Plaque is a transparent adhesive fluid composed of mucin, sloughed epithelial cells, and aerobic gram-positive cocci. If the plaque is not removed, mineral salts in the food will precipitate to form hard dental calculus, or tartar. Rough calculus covered with plaque is irritating to the gingival tissue, changing the pH of the mouth, and allowing bacteria to survive sub gingivally, often causing pain and the tooth to be lost.

🧐How is periodontal disease being diagnosed?
In general, veterinarians will perform periodontal probing and charting. A periodontal probe is an important instrument used to evaluate periodontal health. Besides that, intraoral radiography supplies important information when deciding which teeth can benefit from surgery and which should be extracted. When periodontal disease is not treated, subgingival bacteria can continue to reproduce, potentially creating deeper periodontal pockets through bone destruction. Eventually, this progression can cause tooth loss and systemic disease.

🤔How is periodontal disease being treated?
The goal of treating periodontal disease is to decrease or eliminate the periodontal pocket. Usually, veterinarian will advise routine dental scaling and polishing. However, if there is moderate periodontal disease, the affected tooth must be extracted. Ideally, surgery is performed by removing the rotten tooth, preserves the attached gingiva, and allows the gingiva to be resutured in a fashion to eliminate the periodontal pocket promoting reattachment to the root surface.

⚠️Pulmonary Edema in Puppy😱

Pulmonary edema is the accumulation of fluid in the interstitium and alveoli at a rate faster than it can be reabsorbed. It can be caused by heart related disease or non-heart related disease, such as primary lung disease like pneumonia, toxin inhalation.

🧐How is pulmonary edema being diagnosed?
During physical examination, veterinarian may auscultate the heart and lung sound. Usually, patients will be presented with tachypnea or dyspnea, coughing and cyanosis. Harsh lung sounds and crackles may be heard too, if severe, dull lung sounds may be heard. Patients with heart-related disease may hear heart murmur or irregular rhythm heartbeat. Besides that, veterinarians will perform pulse oximetry to check for oxygen concentration in the blood. Blood test and heart biomarker test are essential to check for underlying disease and heart or lung related disease. Ultimately, radiography is a hallmark for veterinarians to diagnose pulmonary edema and other diseases such as cardiomegaly and pleural effusion.

🤔How is pulmonary edema being treated?
Stabilization of patients is utmost important for pulmonary edema. Fluid therapy and oxygen therapy is warranted if the patient is weak and having dyspnea. Treatment of heart related pulmonary edema involves giving diuretics and other heart-related medication. Other medications such as antibiotics, sedatives, pain killers are given too as supportive treatment. Monitoring with pulse oximetry may be warranted. Repeated thoracic radiographs can be performed to check for resolution.

⚠️High Blood Pressure in Cat😱

High blood pressure is an extremely important concern in human medicine. A high stress lifestyle, smoking, and high salt diet all contribute to this potentially dangerous condition globally. Pets do get high blood pressure, especially in old age.

🧐What does High Blood Pressure Do?
Problems from high blood pressure arise when a blood vessel is simply too small for the high-pressure flow going through it. Since the affected vessels are small, the bleeding may not be noticeable, but a lot of little bleeds and a lot of blood vessel destruction can create big problems over time. There are numerous diseases in pets that are associated with high blood pressure, such as retinal disease, blindness, chronic kidney failure, hyperthyroidism, Cushing’s disease, diabetes mellitus, acromegaly, and stroke.

🤔How is High Blood Pressure Identified?
In general, high blood pressure is called as silent killer, hence veterinarians deal with high blood pressure is by screening. If a pet has one of the above conditions, blood pressure is generally checked. It has recently been recommended that older pets have their blood pressure checked whenever they have a physical examination. However, high blood pressure is detected once it makes its presence known, such as some degree of blindness or retinal detachment.

🏥What Treatment is Available for Hypertension?
When hypertension is identified, a search for the underlying cause is indicated. It may be that controlling the underlying disease totally reverses the hypertension. Beyond these methods, medication to lower blood pressure is often in order, such as calcium channel blocker, angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-I). Supportive treatment and restricted diet are often prescribed After hypertension is controlled, patients should be rechecked every two to four months to keep their blood pressure in a healthy range.

⚠️Fractures in Pets😱

🧐Did you know that fractures in dogs and cats are treated surgically more often than humans? Compared to humans, animals more commonly fracture the major bones closest to the body, which are the femur in the hind limb and the humerus in the front limb. Fractures in these bones are often due to major traumas in our pets, such as accidents or falling from high buildings.

🤔Is casting or bandaging helpful for fracture in dogs and cats?
Fractures of the femur and humerus do not lend themselves to stabilization with splints or casts. Placing and maintaining casts or splints are major challenges for dogs and cats, besides keeping casts clean and dry, and avoiding pressure sores under the bandage material, are impossible in pets. In addition, in very small animals, the weight of a cast or splint may make it difficult to impossible for the animal to move around.

📝Why surgery is important for bone fracture?
The primary goal of fracture fixation surgeries is to restore broken bones to their original anatomic position and rigidly fix them in place while healing occurs. Usually, it involves the application of various metal surgical implants such as pins, wires, plates, or screws.

🏥What to do after bone fracture repair surgery?
While most animals will be encouraged to use the surgically repaired limb, this activity must be under strict control. Keeping animals from licking at the surgical incision is important to prevent delay healing or incision infections. Pain relief during in-hospital period is crucial too, as discomfort and pain is to be expected after the trauma of the injury and subsequent surgery.

⚠️Pyothorax in Cat😱

🧐What is pleural space in the lungs?
The space around the lungs is called the pleural space, normally containing fluid for lubrication. However, if the pleural space is infected with disease, the pleural space can be filled with fluid or air.

🤔What are the clinical signs of pyothorax?
If pus fills the pleural space, it is difficult for the lung to expand properly. The patient cannot breathe properly. Also, the pet will use abdominal muscles to expand the chest, listless, not eating, and feverish.

😨How Does Pus Get into the Pleural Space?
In cats usually noticed a bite wound, which may pe*****te the chest cavity, or may abscess externally and rupture inward, causing bacteria formation in blood stream. As a result, bacterial infection occurs in the pleural space and the formation of pus. This causes imbalance in fluid production and drainage in the pleural space.

📝How is pyothorax being diagnosed?
Besides routine history taking, physical examination, doctors will perform blood tests to know the infectious agents and radiography to examine the lung field. Diagnosis is confirmed by tapping the chest with a needle and pus is taken from inside the chest cavity.

🏥How is pyothorax being treated?
The imminent therapy will be immediate oxygen therapy. Patient handling and restraint must be done with care to avoid respiratory distress. Then only thoracocentesis or thoracostomy tube is done to relieve the lung compression. Necessary antimicrobial and fluid therapy are required too.

⚠️Splenomegaly in cat due to splenic torsion😱

🧐What is splenomegaly and splenic torsion?
Splenomegaly is the enlargement of the spleen due to inflammation or infection; immunological stimulation; congestion due to splenic torsion or cancer. Splenic torsion is the twisting of the spleen which will cause severe complications to the spleen and body.

🤔How is splenomegaly in cats diagnosed?
In general, cats may show clinical signs like diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal distension, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, weakness, weight loss and lethargy. Veterinarian will detect mass due to enlarged spleen during abdominal palpation. Further diagnoses like radiography and ultrasonography are useful too. Abdominal radiography can detect splenomegaly as a mass effect, with surrounding abdominal organ displacement. Abdominal ultrasonography is more sensitive than radiography, but unable to distinguish between cancerous or non-cancerous diseases. Further evaluation through cytology or biopsy is needed to confirm the diagnosis.

🏥How is splenic torsion being treated?
Splenectomy is the treatment of choice. Prognosis depends on the ability to identify the underlying cause and treat it appropriately, which varies from excellent to guarded/poor if cancer is present. Supportive treatment like fluid therapy, antibiotics or blood product transfusions may be required during recovery stage.

⚠️Pleural effusion in cat😱

🧐What is pleural effusion in cat?
Pleural effusion is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pleural space. Pleura consists of 2 layers which are parietal and visceral pleura. Parietal pleura covers the chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinum whereas visceral pleura covers the lung surface. Small amount of fluid in the pleural space helps to lubricate the lungs during respiration and transport electrolytes and solutes. Pleural effusion develops when an imbalance between fluid formation by the parietal pleura and fluid resorption by the visceral pleura. There are 3 types of effusion, transudate, modified transudate, and exudate.

🤔How is pleural effusion diagnosed?
In general, respiratory clinical signs are seen such as tachypnea, dyspnea, increased respiratory effort, open-mouth breathing. Patients may have cyanosis, pale mucous membranes, abdominal pain, abdominal distension from concurrent peritoneal effusion and lateral recumbency. Muffled lung and heart sounds may be auscultated. Blood tests and serum biochemistry tests can be done to reflect the underlying disease. Radiography is performed to show severity and abnormalities of the lung. Thoracocentesis can be done to collect samples of effusion for diagnostic testing, as well as to provide therapeutic relief.

🏥How is pleural effusion treated?
Once the underlying cause is determined, specific therapy can be performed. Thoracocentesis can be attempted in all patients with significant respiratory signs or compromise. If continued production of fluid is anticipated, an indwelling catheter may be inserted. Supportive therapy like oxygen and fluids therapy can be administered, and systemic antibiotics can be given if infection is present. Constant monitoring of respiratory rate and effort, mucous membrane color, heart rate and rhythm, and pulse oximetry must be performed until the patient is stable.

⚠️Obesity in Cats😱

😺Cats are generally active and able to regulate the amount of food they eat. However, there is an increasing trend for modern cats to eat more high fat food and take less exercise. Obesity is an excessive accumulation of fat in the body that adversely affects health – it does not just mean being overweight.

🧐How to tell if my cat is overweight or obese?
It is often difficult for us to see that our own pet is overweight as weight gain is so gradual. When you are stroking your cat next, run your hand gently over its backbone and ribs. In an ideal weight cat, you should be able to feel the bones without pressing too hard. In an obese cat, you cannot feel the backbone easily, tend to have a "baggy tummy" hanging between their back legs. If the weight gain is allowed to continue your cat is at risk of becoming obese and developing obesity-related diseases. It is usually some other disease caused by obesity that prompts their owner to make an appointment with the veterinarian like matted coats, skin problems, cystitis, liver problem and diabetes. The extra weight they are carrying puts strain on their joints and heart. They play less and can become bored and sleep more.

🤔How can I help my cat lose weight?
There are only two ways to lose weight; increase the amount of energy used by exercising; or reduce the number of calories taken by eating less energy-dense food. Your veterinarian will design a weight loss plan for your cat that will make sure they continue to eat the protein and nutrients they require to maintain health and muscle strength, but cut down on the calories from fats and carbohydrate. Maintaining a normal bodyweight is an important part of keeping your cat healthy.

⚠️Diabetes Mellitus in cat😱

🧐What is Diabetes Mellitus?
Diabetes is caused by a deficiency of insulin. Diabetes mostly involves metabolizing sugar, particularly a sugar called glucose in which insulin injections are given to correct the deficiency. Tissues cannot absorb glucose without insulin, so the level of insulin affects the glucose level. There are 3 types of diabetes, notably Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 depending on the cause of diabetes.

📝What are the symptoms of diabetes mellitus in cats?
The main symptoms are excessive urination, thirst, appetite, and weight loss. The kidney compensates by dumping glucose straight into the urine. The kidney needs much water to do that, so a larger volume of urine is made just for dumping, causing a cycle of excessive thirst and urination. If you notice any of these symptoms, please consult veterinarian immediately.

🤔How do we diagnose diabetes mellitus?
In general, blood tests like biochemistry panel and fructosamine measurement are done to identify the high amount of blood glucose. Urinalysis is done too which will reveal presence of glucose in the urine.

🏥How do we treat diabetes mellitus?
The goals of therapy are to revert a transient diabetic into a state of remission; maintain BG levels below renal threshold for as much of a 24-hour period as possible; avoid hypoglycemia; and improve clinical signs. Veterinarian will administer insulin therapy based on glucose averages and will fine tune it thereafter. While using too little insulin (high blood sugar or hyperglycemia) can lead to problems, using too much insulin (low blood sugar or hypoglycemia) is potentially life-threatening in the short term. Dietary modification is an important component of therapy. A high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet is recommended. Control of body weight and treatment of concurrent disease are equally important too. Diabetes requires constant monitoring; hence blood glucose curve, blood glucose check and urinalysis must be done gradually.

⚠️Cystolithiasis in Dog😱

🧐What is cystolithiasis?
Bladder stones, (urolithiasis or cystolithiasis) are solid mineral deposits that form inside the bladder of dogs and cats. Stones start out as crystals that form in the urine due to urine pH change or increased urine concentration. The two most common types of bladder stones are calcium oxalate (acidic) and struvite (alkaline).

📝What are the symptoms of cystolithiasis?
Symptoms of bladder stones include stranguria, oligouria, dribbling urine, urinating in unusual places such as inside the house if house-trained or outside the litter box, painful when urinating and frequently licking the v***a or p***s. The urine may have a strong odor and may have mucus or blood in it.

🤔How is cystolithiasis being diagnosed?
Large stones can be felt during abdominal palpation. Urinalysis can be done to look for crystals, pH changes, and evidence of infection. X-rays are almost always necessary to confirm bladder stones.

🏥How to treat cystolithiasis?
In combination with prescription diet and antibiotics for bacteria, struvite stones can be dissolved which will take weeks to months. Calcium oxalate stones cannot be dissolved with diet. Hydropulsion can be done to propel the urethral stones into the bladder to allow for easier removal. If hydropulsion does not work and diet change is not an appropriate option for the pet, cystotomy is needed to remove the bladder stones. For prevention, it specific therapeutic food to be given to the pet with increase water consumption help to dilute the urine to further decrease chances of bladder stone formation.
