Karaage chicken with side salad 🥗 🇯🇵

In line with a Chinese Peranakan tradition, we will be serving Bubur Chacha this weekend (23-25 Feb 2024) to celebrate Chap Goh Meh.

Did you know? The Chinese Peranakans (especially in Penang) would cook up a dessert dish called Bubur Chacha on Chap Goh Meh (15th day of the first chinese lunar month).

This dessert dish becomes Pengat if bananas (Pisang Raja) is added. Truly a perfect way to end off the celebration- sweet and hearty.

We were being cheeky at the cafe! We made piccolo lattés with these antique chinawares from our private collection (with permission of course!).

Pain Perdu.

Our Pain Perdu, also known as french toast, is made from our house-made Brioche 🍞 , soaked in our own egg custard which gives off an eggy and creamy mouthfeel to the french toast.

We occasionally change the fruit toppings to whatever that is available seasonally. For this season, it’s Mandarin Oranges 🍊, Strawberries 🍓 from Cameron Highlands, and Blueberries 🫐 .

You’ll find a generous serving of yoghurt on the side for you to pair with the toast and fruits, sprinkled with our house-made granola.

The “kamcheng” represents a covered container, with its name derived from the Hokkien dialect, translating to “covered jar.” Its design features a tub-like shape with a domed cover, adorned with a standing Buddhist lion-dog atop it. Additionally, two pairs of opposing blue lion-dog masks serve as ring handles on the sides. The central motif showcases a phoenix in flight, characterized by a scaly green body and intricate dark accents, surrounded by green foliage and pink peony blossoms.

Symbolizing beauty, grace, virtue, and royal significance, the phoenix holds associations with the bride and the Empress. Against a backdrop of rose pink, conveying meanings of happiness, longevity, youthfulness, and innocence, these elements create a visually striking piece. Moreover, the container’s rim is embellished with symbols from the Eight Auspicious Buddhist Emblems, such as the Lotus Flower, interspersed with trailing ribbons against the same rose pink background.

The “kamcheng” serves various everyday purposes, including storing rice, pickles, soup, and desserts like Glutinous Rice Balls (Tang Yuan) or Bubur Chacha. Additionally, it holds significance as one of the three essential items in Peranakan Chinese wedding ceremonies. During the twelve days of wedding celebrations, it was traditionally utilized to carry an assortment of foods and sweet treats to the bridal chamber for the newlyweds.

This is a Thai-inspired coffee drink. Technically a long black, but instead of water, we use coconut water & toddy palm fruit (also known as sea coconut) for an extra bite while sipping this drink.
