What is CNC turret punching?

Turret punching is a fast, reliable and scalable way to punch press sheet metal by cutting a variety of holes with different shapes and sizes. The machine ‘punches’ sheet metal against a die/tool with great force, creating holes, straight edges, notches or grooves.

CNC (or computer numerical control) is a system integration with the turret punching machine to achieve high precision cutting and holes with minimum burr.

Traditionally, turret punchers are operated manually (think hand punching with a lever!). While traditional hand punching allows flexibility, manual punching is less accurate and less economical for the manufacturing of volume-based orders that require speed and high precision. Hence, CNC integration with a turret puncher is the perfect combination: automates the process of cutting sheet metal with design versatility in a shorter time and with high precision.

CNC-controlled punching automatically positions the sheet metal beneath the die and an operator locks in the position at the edges of the worktable. First, a computer-controlled software converts a computer-aided design and tells the turret machine how many individual punching operations are required. With the correct steps and turret affixed, the program triggers the ram and drives the punching through the sheet metal, and pulls back. The sheet metal also moves along the x-axis and y-axis. This process repeats and the turret revolves with different die/tools until the specified design is completed.

Cost efficiency and supplier selection in using turret machines depends on several factors. Do you need specific tooling requirements? How many parts/pieces would you like to produce? What is the complexity of your part’s design and how many steps are needed to produce one piece? What are the design, volume and speed capabilities of the manufacturer? These are some questions to ask to determine cost-scalability, machine functioning time and tooling design requirements.

With an increased popularity and more common use of laser cutting technologies for sheet metal fabrication in manufacturing processes, one important consideration for clients is the laser source used in sheet metal cutting. The first generation of commonly used laser cutting system involves the use of CO2 sources. Growing with popularity in the last decade, high power fiber and disk lasers have been introduced as a reliable alternative to CO2 laser cutting.

-Improves production efficiency by 20-30%, which is three to six times more than CO2 laser
-Higher beam quality and lower maintenance
-Rapid speed for fusion cutting of thin sheets of metals and highly reflective metals
-Fiber laser cutting conserves 50% more energy compared to CO2 laser machines
-Significantly higher laser source efficiency and machine tool cooling efficiency at maximum laser output power
