The concept of "false sickness" due to psychological stress can be understood in different ways. People may experience physical symptoms as a result of stress, even if there is no underlying medical condition. This phenomenon is often referred to as somatization, where emotional distress manifests as physical symptoms:
- Psychogenic fever, a perceived increase in body temperature
- Flu-like symptoms, off and on
- Throat glands feeling swollen
- Overall body "weakness and pain"
- Nauseous and bubbly gut feeling
Stress triggers the release of stress hormones (cortisol) which in turns suppresses immunity, which can mimic sick-like symptoms. However, studies shows that chronic stress will eventually lead on the diseases like hypertension, heart disease, obesity and metabolic syndrome and Type II diabetes.
