THEY (*ahem Research) say risky play in early childhood helps children develop resilience, confidence and risk assessment abilities which in turn reduces the risk of injury (ironically right?!).

We often get questions about the use of plywood vs solid wood - which is stronger? The answer is: it depends.

Plywood is often perceived as low quality in Malaysia because the ones you see in hardware stores are construction grade. But there are furniture grade plywood with various grades that are of a better quality (which we use).

We chose plywood for our products because it is engineered wood designed to have high impact resistance and increased stability. This is important to ensure safety and durability. Plywood has also grown to be more aesthetically pleasing due to its’ warm hue and natural grains compared to plastic and chipboard laminates. Also, plywood is a sustainable option when it comes to processing a tree

Is it necessary to intervene when children play? We ask parent educators for their thoughts.

The short answer is yes, sometimes.

The longer answer is:
We can trust and honour our children's competence. We often feel like we need to be constantly teaching or entertaining our children, but the truth is that they are very capable of learning and focusing for extended periods when given the opportunity to lead their own play without interruption. We want to try and minimise distraction when a child is fully focused on playing.
However, there are situations where it is necessary for us to step in, such as:

👶🏼 To keep them safe
Sometimes our children get into precarious situations, like sitting too close to the edge of a table or curiously putting their fingers near a wall socket. While we want to keep them safe, it helps to not have a huge reaction that can sometimes shock them into the harmful situation we were trying to avoid. Our goal is to help them build body awareness and learn to assess risk. Where possible (if it's not an emergency), we try to pause and give them some time to maneuver out of the situation on their own or with minimal support.

👶🏼 To keep others safe
As our children grow and become more social, they'll inevitably get into conflicts. These aren't bad things, simply situations that allow our children to learn and practice appropriate social behaviours. Our main job is to keep everyone safe, while allowing them space to try and resolve conflict on their own. We can narrate what we observe without offering an immediate solution, only stepping in if it looks like someone might get hurt.

👶🏼 To model appropriate use of materials
Just because we respect our children's play, doesn't mean that we cannot set boundaries around how materials should be used. We can certainly model appropriate behaviour i.e. not throwing toys that can break, keeping messy materials within a certain area or limiting rough play to outdoors. By doing this, we teach our children how to respect the environment and those around them.

Is it Playtime or bedtime? Create a safe space for your child by getting the right furniture and let them own the space 😊 our reversible toddler bed is suitable for toddlers who like their own space AND toddlers who likes to sleep with mommy and daddy.

Note: railing works for mattress that is up to 23cm thick - comes with a side gate that is removable so toddler can climb in and out easily. Turn the bed the other way around and you get a normal height bed for when they grow older/join with mommy’s bed for co-sleepers

1⃣Doing it out of frustration
OR
2⃣Throwing because they’re engaged in the trajectory play schema

That being said, there are ways to support your child’s emotional expression and learning while keeping everyone safe.

The whole idea around these steps is that you and your child are on the same team and you're trying to help keep everyone safe. So 1) blocking him physically is helping him control himself and 2) offering him a substitute also supports him in exploring the trajectory schema or express himself in a way that's safe.

⚡️Remember that you and your child are still learning and giving yourselves grace will help make it easier for the both of you.

🤡 MYTH 2: Closed ended toys don't promote your children to think/problem solve.

💯 REALITY: Not all close ended toys are bad, e.g. Puzzles and books are great close-ended toys. But a general rule of 70% open-ended, passive toys and 30% close-ended toys would serve (you and) your child well.

🤡 MYTH 3: Open-ended toys are so expensive!

💯 REALITY: Everyday items like bottle caps, cardboard boxes, tissue paper rolls, bowls and cups are great open-ended materials for child-led open-ended play.

G U I D E on when should you start your child on KLYMB and how it is beneficial for their physical development.

6-12mo: Baby starts to stand with support, pulls on furniture to stand up, walks sideways while holding on to furniture, takes steps with hands held - use KLYMB to be their YES space.

12-18mo: Toddler starts to walk down stairs holding a railing, placing both feet on the same step. This is the crucial stage for them to learn balance and control, gripping and climbing over, up and down... safely. Notice that the Klymb has no single rung at the top - this allows toddlers to rest when they reach the top, encouraging them to explore the other side as they get comfortable and confident.

18-24mo: at this age, they're physically active and KLYMB is really a safe outlet for them to explore for different pretend plays (e.g. camping tent) and just, play. Let their imagination unfold! If you introduced KLYMB before they turn 1, you will notice the agility/coordination skills your child has developed by now.

24-36mo: use this as an obstacle course at home!

36mo and beyond: Our rung size is small enough for babies to grip comfortably yet give the older kids a challenge as they balance climbing upwards with a smaller surface area. Balancing is a skill that never gets old (even when you think your 5yo got it all).
