🍁THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF RAINWATER HARVESTING🍁

Rainwater harvesting can reduce stormwater runoff from a property. The elimination of runoff can reduce contamination of surface water with pesticides, sediment, metals, and fertilizers.
By reducing stormwater runoff, rainwater harvesting can reduce a storm’s peak flow volume and velocity in local creeks, streams, and rivers, thereby reducing the potential for streambank erosion.
Rainwater harvesting systems can be employed as simple and effective methods to meet a municipality’s stormwater management program requirements of individual properties.
It is an excellent source of water for plants and landscape irrigation since it has no chemicals such as fluoride and chloramines (chlorine).

🌿THE WATER CONSERVATION BENEFITS OF RAINWATER HARVESTING🌿

The rainwater that falls on your roof and property is essentially free. All it takes is a method to harvest it into a tank or cistern for later use.
Rainwater harvesting can be a great educational tool to get people to recognize their individual or household water usage. This can get them to start conserving water in other areas around their home.
For communities that rely on imported water to supply their needs, collecting rainwater that falls naturally in the community can reduce the need for imported water.
Rainwater harvesting helps utilities reduce peak demands during summer months, saving treated water for more important and appropriate water uses.
While rainwater can be a perfect primary water source for many uses and situations, it is also a great backup water supply for emergency situations.

🍁Benefits of Rainwater Harvesting🍁

Rainwater harvesting is a simple and primary technique of collecting water from natural rainfall. At the time of a water crisis, it would be the most easily adaptable method of mitigating water scarcity. The system is applicable for both critical and normal situations. It is an environmentally friendly technique that includes efficient collection and storage that greatly helps local people. The associated advantages of rainwater harvesting are that
(i) it can curtail the burden on the public water supply, which is the main source of city water;
(ii) it can be used in case of an emergency (i.e., fire);
(iii) it is solely cost effective as installation cost is low, and it can reduce expense that one has to pay for water bills;
(iv) it extends soil moisture levels for development of vegetation;
(v) groundwater level is highly recharged during rainfall.

Rainwater harvesting captures, diverts, and stores rainwater from rooftops for later use. Typical uses of rainwater include landscape irrigation, wash applications, ornamental pond and fountain filling, cooling tower make-up water, and toilet and urinal flushing. With additional filtration and disinfection, harvested rainwater can also be treated to potable standards to supplement municipal potable water supplies to facilities.

⚜️What is the Role of Rainwater Harvesting in Sustainable Water Management⚜️

Rainwater harvesting is defined as the collection and storage of rainwater before it is dispersed as surface run-off. Typically, a rainwater harvesting system collects the water running off a roof surface and passes it into a storage vessel.

It’s a process that is by its nature inherently efficient; simply put, rainwater is a water supply that is used where it is collected.

The water quality is typically high so it can be used for a wide variety of non-potable (non-drinking) purposes including WC flushing, laundry, garden irrigation and vehicle washing.

⚜️What is “Integrated Urban Water Management”⁉️

Integrated urban water management strategies emerged as a response to growing populations, urbanization, climate change and water challenges at local, regional, and national levels.

It’s a process that encourages the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources to maximize economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems. It offers a holistic, combined approach to managing water sources, infrastructure needs and maintaining healthy waterways.

Rainwater Harvesting and ESG

Rainwater harvesting is a multipurpose way of supplying usable water to consumers during a crisis period, recharging the groundwater and finally reducing the runoff and water logging during the season of heavy rainfall. Traditional knowledge, skills, and materials can be used for this system. During the rainy season, an individual can collect water on his rooftop and manage it on his own. Reserved rainwater on rooftops can be used for self-purposes or domestic use. Water from different rooftops of a lane can also be collected through a piped network and stored for some time. This water can be then channeled to deep wells to recharge groundwater directly, to ponds to replenish groundwater slowly, and to reservoirs to dilute reclaimed water for non potable use. Figure 8 shows the schematic view of a rainwater harvesting system.

Unless it comes into contact with a surface or collection system, the quality of rainwater meets Environmental Protection Agency standards [27], and the independent characteristic of its harvesting system has made it suitable for scattered settlement and individual operation. If needed, a chemical treatment such as chlorination can be used to purify the water. The acceptance of rainwater harvesting will expand rapidly if methods are treated such as building services and if designed into the structure instead of being retrofitted.

DD Techniche @ Malaysia - International Green Build Conference (GBC) 2023

We appreciate the opportunity to exhibit as a sponsor for the GBC 2023 event held at One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya. Jointly organised by REHDA Institute & GreenRE (1st August 2023, One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia) where more than 350 thought leaders were present to discuss the latest ideas in the areas of sustainability/green building 🌱🏡 from the region and from all over Malaysia.

We featured our Rainwater Harvesting System to the attendees to introduce them a sustainable solution to water scarcity, along with Automated Waste Collection from STREAM.

In support of the event’s environment friendly practice of not providing one-use plastic water bottles , BWT (Best Water Technology) filtered water 💦 were provided at the venue for attendees to drink - in-line with BWT’s campaign “Be the Change” that aims to reduce plastic waste through the consumption of tasty, Magnesium-Mineralized, filtered local water.
