🎙️ Pepe Kalle (November 30, 1951 – November 29, 1998), was a Congolese soukous singer, musician, and bandleader. Born Kabasele Yampanya in Kinshasa, he adopted his pseudonym in tribute to his mentor, Le Grand Kallé.

With a vast vocal range and dynamic stage presence, 6.11ft and 150 kg (330 lb) vocalist recorded over three hundred songs and twenty albums during his two-decade career. Affectionately known as "the elephant of African music🐘🎶" and "La Bombe Atomique💥," Kallé captivated audiences with robust performances.

His musical journey began with l'African Jazz, Le Grand Kallé's band, followed by stints in Bella Bella and as the lead singer of Lipua Lipua alongside Nyboma Mwandido. In 1972, Kallé, along with Dilu Dilumona and Papy Tex, formed Empire Bakuba, named after a Congolese warrior ethnic group. Their incorporation of rootsy rhythms and the creation of the kwassa kwassa dance made them Kinshasa's popular youth band.

Empire Bakuba's success grew, and by 1982, they were voted Zaire's top group. Touring extensively and releasing multiple albums annually, they gained a massive following in Francophone Central and West Africa. Collaborations with Nyboma, such as "Zouke zouke" (1986) and "Moyibi" (1988), further elevated Kallé's popularity. The latter song included a reference to Rock-a-Mambo's "Bakoule (Bidama)."

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Kallé blended soukous elements from Paris studios. His 1990 album, "Roger Milla," paid tribute to the Cameroonian football player. Despite facing challenges, like the loss of dancer Ayilla Emoro in 1992, Kallé's popularity soared in the nineties with albums like "Gigantafrique🎶," "Larger than life🎶," and "Cocktail." He collaborated with legends like Lutumba Simaro and N'Yoka Longo.

Musician Wendy Harawa says time has come for Malawian artists to cross the bridge to the international market.

Wendy is set to fly the country's flag in Lagos, Nigeria at the launch of BridgeAfric on Wednesday.

It is an initiative is led by Victoria Nkong that
is set to illuminate the African entertainment scene.

The inaugural launch of BridgeAfric will be a two-fold affair, with the African edition taking place in Lagos on Wednesday and then European edition scheduled for January 31 2024 in France.

Nkong, an associate producer of All Africa Music Awards (Africa), says she invited Wendy to be part of the launch as a woman who is doing so much in the music industry .

"She understands the challenges and the importance of the project. She is doing alot to support artists and African talents from her region," Nkong says.

Wendy has in recent times collaborated with a number of artists from countries such as Uganda.

She also held a Blessings Gospel concert which brought veteran South African artist Rebecca Malope to Malawi.
