A Schützenfest is a traditional festival or fair featuring a target shooting competition in the cultures of Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
At a Schützenfest, contestants compete based on their shooting abilities. More about the Windhoek Lions Club:
Chartered on March 19, 1958, the Windhoek Lions Club is the oldest Lions Club in Namibia and has a proud track record of its members pursuing the association's purpose under its international banner of "WE SERVE". Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization

Explanation of the competition:
Participants will receive a „starter kit“, comprising of two series (four targets) for the secondary competition, i.e. shooting for gold, silver or bronze. Five shots per target with a total score out of 100. The competitors can obtain additional series (two targets) throughout the day to improve on their scores.
The starter kit will also contain a Königkarte which may only be used once throughout the day, with one single shot at the target. Whoever gets the closest to a bullseye will be crowned Schützenkönig and Schützenkönigin – a title they hold for an entire year.
Shots will be done with an airgun (which will be provided on-site) over 10m on a standard 140mm x 140mm, 10-point target. Shots are to be done in the Standing position – no rest.

Proper dress is an important part of every German Schützenfest, and if you don't follow the dress code, you'll stand out. Members of shooting clubs turn up in military-style uniforms complete with feathered hats and decorations.
In Namibia we are not that strict, however, would it not be nice to take the Dirndl and Lederhose for a day out?

The Schützenfest: a popular tradition and a great reason to celebrate!
Regional festivals are a highlight of the year for many towns and cities in Germany - and for some, they play an integral role in shaping identity. What Oktoberfest is to Bavaria, Carnival is to the Rhineland… and in the Sauerland, the big event is the Schützenfest or marksmen's festival.
The Windhoek Lions Club already brought this tradition to Namibia last year and will continue with the spirit.

Some traditions stay the same no matter where the Schützenfest takes place, and the actual shooting competition is the most prominent part.
It is rumoured that back in the day the marksman aimed at live birds. Nowadays, they shoot wooden representations of birds or bullseyes. They take turns shooting the same target. The marksman that causes the last piece of wood to fall wins.
At the Windhoek Lions Club Schützenfest, every marksman gets his own shooting target and the one with the best scores will earn the title.
