Have you ever seen a bird this big? Our ostriches are strutting their stuff and bringing the laughs. Here are some fun ostrich facts that'll make you smile! 😄

Fun Facts about Ostriches:
1. Ostriches can run up to 70 km/h! That's faster than most speed limits!
2. Their eyes are bigger than their brains. No wonder they always look so surprised! 👀
3. An ostrich's feathers are not just for show – they help them cool down in the heat. Stylish and practical!
4. Male ostriches share parenting duties and take turns sitting on the eggs. Modern family goals!
5. Ever heard of the myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand? They don't – but they do flop down and play dead when scared. Drama queens, right?
6. An ostrich egg is the largest of any living bird and can weigh as much as 1.4 kg! It’s like having an omelet for the whole family! 🍳
7. Unlike most birds, ostriches have only two toes on each foot. One big toe for speed and one small toe for balance. Talk about fancy footwork!

Wednesdays - Fridays only

*** MUSHROOM & LENTIL POTJIE ***

Ingredients:
2 tbsp olive oil
6 cups vegetable stock
1 cup carrots, chopped
1 cup celery, chopped
1 cup onion, chopped
2 large potatoes, cut into 3 cm squares
2 cups dried brown lentils
2 tins chopped tomatoes
4 cloves minced garlic
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp dried thyme
2 fresh bay leaves
100 g cherry tomatoes
100 g sugar snap peas (peas still in the pod)
250 g Portabello mushrooms, sliced
250 g white button mushrooms, sliced
Salt & pepper
Fresh parsley

Method:
1. In a potjie pot pour in the olive oil and allow to heat.
2. Once hot fry the onions and garlic for 1-2 min. Add in the carrots and celery and allow to continue to cook for another 5 min.
3. Add in the potatoes, dried lentils, tinned tomatoes, dried basil, dried thyme, bay leaves and stock.
4. Allow to simmer for about 45 min.
5. Add in the cherry tomatoes, sugar snap peas and mushrooms.
6. Continue to simmer for another 30 min. At this point check to see if the vegetables have cooked through and the lentils are tender.
7. Season to taste. If needed add more stock.
8. Remove from direct heat and allow the potjie to stay warm while serving.

Serve with some fresh parsley and crusty bread for mopping up the sauce.

We are close to announcing our opening date! Our renovations are going very well, with things starting to move to the final stages. We know you are just as excited as we are for the re-opening, so keep your eyes on our socials to stay updated.

Meet Donkey! Did you know that donkeys have big ears to help them keep cool in warm climates?

Here are 5 more facts about donkeys that you didn't know!

1. They are very social animals and don't like being alone.
2. They are stubborn for a reason! This is a defence mechanism when they are in a situation they dislike, they will stand their ground instead of running away. This gives them a chance to decide on what to do next.
3. Some donkeys are tiny! Miniature donkeys are native to Sicily & Sardinia, these donkeys have not been bred to be small, they are naturally tiny.
4. They are very strong...much stronger than horses of the same size!
5. Because of the position of their eyes, they can see all four of their feet at once!

Once we have reopened, you can come by to meet our donkeys yourself!

Recently, we hosted a Star Gazing & Farm Day for Suiderhof Primary School, in collaboration with Zappy Joy! Here the students learned more about growing veggies, caring for animals and farm life. They visited the nearby telescope to learn more about space, stars and astrology. 🌜⭐🌘 The day ended with an amazing bonfire and camping under the clear night sky!

Winter is here and we're looking forward to drinking true, French hot chocolate! To truly enjoy it in the French style, grab one of our delicious, home-baked baguettes at the Green Market, toast it lightly and dip it in your hot chocolate!

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 teaspoons powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon espresso powder (optional, but delicious for intensifying chocolate flavour)
227 grams bittersweet chocolate (at least 70%, chopped*)
Whipped cream for serving

* Do not use chocolate chips, as they do not melt properly.

METHOD:
1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the whole milk, heavy cream, powdered sugar, and espresso powder until small bubbles appear around the edges. Do not allow the mixture to boil.

2. Remove from saucepan from the heat and stir in the chopped chocolate until melted, returning the sauce to low heat if needed for the chocolate to melt completely. Serve warm, topped with lots of whipped cream.
