Ribbed Slab under construction.

This type of Slab have been proven to be more economical compared to the solid slab when applied in larger spanning area.

The idea that concrete is weak in the tension zone below the neutral axis, hence this type of slab helps to reduce the volume of concrete required. It can be constructed using sandcrete blocks, bricks or polystyrene material placed between two joist/rib and on top the concrete is poured. The materials (sandcrete blocks, bricks and polystyrene) can be removed days after the concrete or made permanent depending on the design.
It helps to save the amount of formwork required for the slab.
