The Kingdom of God – what is it?
When asked “What exactly is the Kingdom of God?”, most people would tend to spiritualize it to cover for the fact that they really do not know what it is. I believe that the Kingdom of God is going to be a real, physical kingdom on this earth. Daniel believed that too. He told us “…The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.” Daniel 2:44
Jesus also believed this, because he told us that God sent Him to teach us about the coming kingdom.
“Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; but He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” Luke 4:42, 43
He also told us “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14
Isaiah, Daniel, Jeremiah, Amos, Zechariah, Micah, Joel and other prophets also preached about this kingdom of God. So what exactly is this message of the kingdom?
David
When king David decided to build God a house, God decided to let him in on the secret of this coming kingdom. God sent the message to David by the prophet Nathan.
“‘The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son.” 2 Samuel 7:11-14
Although many, including David, interpreted this as Solomon would build a temple, we know now that it could not have been Solomon. God specifically said that it would happen after David had died, and God would set him up, not David. He also said that his throne would last forever. Solomon’s reign did not meet this criteria.
Daniel
Through a series of dreams and visitations, God also shared with Daniel, the message of the kingdom.
With Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, the interpretation revealed,
“In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.” Daniel 2:44
God revealed a lot of details about the future to Daniel in visions. He even sent angels to tell him all about the future. Daniel wrote here about one of his visions of the kingdom.
“As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them, until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.” Daniel 7:21, 22
Isaiah
God told Isaiah even more detail about this coming kingdom. He preached a lot about the future kingdom. He told us that God Himself will one day reign from Mount Zion and Jerusalem on earth.
“Then the glory of the moon will wane, and the brightness of the sun will fade, for the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will rule on Mount Zion. He will rule in great glory in Jerusalem, in the sight of all the leaders of His people.” Isaiah 24:23
The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:6,7
Moses & Miriam
After the Israelites had escaped the pursuing Egyptians by crossing the Red Sea on dry ground, Moses and Miriam wrote and sang a song to God. In that song, they prophesied that God will make the Mount of Zion his home and will reign from there forever.
“You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance— the place, LORD, you made for your dwelling, the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established. The LORD reigns for ever and ever.” Exodus 15:17-18
Ezekiel
God also revealed the plans for the future Temple of the kingdom, in great detail, to the prophet Ezekiel. This is the house that He spoke to David about.
“Then the man brought me to the gate facing east, and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory...The glory of the LORD entered the temple through the gate facing east. Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from inside the temple. He said: “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will live among the Israelites forever.” Ezekiel 43:1,2,4-7
Micah
God also revealed the kingdom message to the prophet Micah. He told us
“In the last days, the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and peoples will stream to it. Many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the LORD Almighty has spoken…“In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will gather the lame; I will assemble the exiles and those I have brought to grief. I will make the lame my remnant, those driven away a strong nation.
The LORD will rule over them in Mount Zion from that day and forever.” Micah 4:1-7
Zephaniah
The prophet Zephaniah prophesied about life in the kingdom when God will rule from Mount Zion.
“Then I will purify the lips of the peoples, that all of them may call on the name of the LORD and serve him shoulder to shoulder. From beyond the rivers of Cush my worshipers, my scattered people, will bring me offerings. On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame for all the wrongs you have done to me, because I will remove from you your arrogant boasters. Never again will you be haughty on my holy hill. But I will leave within you the meek and humble. The remnant of Israel will trust in the name of the LORD. They will do no wrong; they will tell no lies. A deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them afraid… The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.” Zephaniah 3:9-13
Zechariah
The prophet Zechariah also prophesied about the building of the Temple in the kingdom of God. He said that men will come from afar to help in the building of the Temple.
“Tell him this is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD. It is he who will build the temple of the LORD, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’ ... Those who are far away will come and help to build the temple of the LORD, and you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you.” Zechariah 6:12,13,15
Psalms
Even in the songbook of the Bible, we find many Psalms or songs that celebrate the coming kingdom of God.
‘The LORD reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity. The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you. Sing the praises of the LORD, enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations what he has done.’ Psalm 9:7-11 and
“Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding.
God reigns over the nations;
God sits on His holy throne.
The princes of the people have gathered together,
The people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
He is greatly exalted.” Psalm 47:6-9
These represent only a very small sample of the Old Testament messages about God’s Kingdom. God has given us extensive details about this coming kingdom, and what has come to be known as the ‘Day of the Lord’ or ‘that day’. So have we been missing the real message of the Bible? We preach about heaven, and hell, about Grace and prosperity, but we miss the message that almost everyone in the Bible has been preaching. What exactly is this all-important message of the kingdom?
Each of these prophets give us a part of this kingdom message, but now, as we get closer to the time, we can put it all together to get the full message of the kingdom. It is also the reason why God told Daniel to seal up the book until the end of time.
“And thou, Daniel, close the words, and seal the book to the time of the end; until many are taught, and knowledge is increased.” Daniel 12:4
In short, the message of the kingdom is this. God has created this earth and set us here to take charge, but we have done such a terrible job, that one day soon when He has had enough of our insubordination, He will step out of Heaven unto the earth and come close to destroying the earth. However, on His way down He will send out His angels to rapture the saints, dead and alive, and take them to a wide place in the sky while he lays bare the valleys under the ocean. God told Isaiah “I will make people scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir.” Isaiah 12:13
Eventually, the raptured saints will return to earth, led by Jesus, who will be brought before God at the Judgment of the Righteous,(Daniel 7:9-14) and Jesus will be crowned King of Kings, and given all authority to reign over the people of the earth. He will build the new Temple on Mt. Zion and God will make this His home and live and reign in Jerusalem forever. This will be the Kingdom that He has been telling us about for centuries.
